Hey gang, it's time again for your favorite minnow league (and mine), the Belgian Jupiler Pro League!!! These past few years have been a bit of a whirl, haven't they, with all this talent coming out of Belgian football like Witsel, De Bruyne, half of the EPL, But before we go on, let's say goodbye to the club that left us last year: Koninklijke Beerschot Antwerpen Club aka The Rats aka The Bears (were poo poo and, as it turned out, also bankrupt) THE JUPILER PRO LEAGUE IN ANTICIPATION OF THE BELGIANS BEING AT THE WORLD CUP HOPEFULLY MAYBE, I DON'T THINK ANYONE CARES ABOUT THIS Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht aka Sporting aka mauves et blancs/paarswit (purple and white) ~~DEFENDING LEAGUE CHAMPION~~ What did these scrubs accomplish? Nationwide: This team is basically the juggernaut of Belgian football, they've been League champion for a whopping 32times. Their longest streak is five wins from 63-64 to 67-68. They haven't been relegated since 1935. They've won the Belgian Cup 9 times, their longest streak being four wins from 71-72 to 75-76. Anderlecht have won the Supercup 11 times, always as League champion. Anderlecht are one of the three clubs who won the Belgian League Cup. They won the last edition in 2001. They've won two editions of the Bruges Matins, beating Club Brugge twice. International: Anderlecht are the most succesful Belgian team in Europe, winning: -The European Cup Winners' Cup twice by beating West Ham United in 1976 and Austria Wien in 1978. -The UEFA Cup by beating Benfica in 1983. -The UEFA Supercup twice by beating Bayern Munchen in 1976 and Liverpool in 1978. 2012-13: Saw the other clubs gently caress up and fumbled their way into the championship, they missed all their penalties and that's about the only worthwhile thing about their season last year. Trainer: Main JPL rivals: Club Brugge, Standard Liège You've probably heard of: Anthony Vanden Borre, Sacha Kljestan Founded: 1908 Goaltune: Blur - Song 2 Sportvereniging Zulte Waregem aka Essevee What did these scrubs accomplish? Nationwide: They were Second Division champion in 2005, haven't left the Pro League since and won the Belgian Cup in 2006. International: Waregem's biggest accomplishment in Europe was losing to Newcastle in the 3rd round of the UEFA cup. 2012-13: So yeah these guys were one point away from winning the league because they were a really tight team, however everyone vital to the team have since left (Delaplace) or ran away mad and are now begging to come back (Malanda) or are not sure if they'll be back (Hazard) UPDATE: HE'S STAYING. Don't expect another title run for these lads. Club Brugge won the very first Supercup against SK Beveren in 1980. They've won the Bruges Matins 19 times (which isn't really an accomplishment when you're always in the finals since 1991) with a current seven win streak. A comeback against a feisty Wolfsburg kept the streak going. International: Club Brugge have had mixed success outside of Belgium. -Lost the 1976 UEFA Cup final and 1978 European Champion Clubs' Cup final, both against Liverpool. -Won the 1981 Kirin Cup. 2012-13: Georges Leekens cost them the title. But what's that Standard are up against on Thursday? A Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur aka KR-ingar The club's name is Icelandic for Reykjavik Football Club. So it's obvious that this club is based in Reykjavik, Iceland. It's the last Icelandic club of current Club Brugge striker Eidur Gudjohnsen before he left for England. They've won 25 Icelandic league titles, making them the most succesful club in Iceland. They've also won 13 cups, 5 league cups and 3 supercups. Internationally they've never gone past the qualifying rounds of European tournaments. 2012: 4th in the Urvalsdeild, winner of the 2012 Icelandic Cup and the 2012 Deildabikar, winner of the Icelandic Supercup (as league champion and cup winner). Previous opponents in the EL: Glentoran FC (Northern Ireland)

Tomorrow, Gent will play the first game in the brand new Ghelamco Arena (stupid name, but whatever). It's the best arena in Belgium and they are still working on it and I'm super excited to be there. Oh, and the King will also be there, but who cares. The game is against Stuttgart and Gent will probably win. Here are literally 3 pictures, because I'm at work at the moment. I'll probably take some pics myself when I go tomorrow, and maybe I'll even upload them here!! Here's the view from the stands. You'll notice we haven't got a pitch. They put in a pitch last week, but the grass was dying for some weird reason. So yesterday, they rolled out a brand new pitch. Look at that fresh green grass. The huge cranes etc. should be out by tomorrow evening And here's a view from the outside: There's a lot of glass, and there are LED-lights also. I'll dig up a video tonight. As you can see, there is still a whole load of work to do. Even the roads to the stadion aren't entirely finished. But the important thing is, the game tomorrow can go on as planned. For a ton of pics and info, check out the site: https://www.ourfuturestartshere.be

The Ghelamco arena is loving awesome. Gent won against Stuttgart, 2-0. And afterwards we had a little party. I'll try and get the pics of my phone when I get home. In the meantime, check this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8LVdM1epMc The stadion wasn't completely finished, but there was beer, soccer and almost 20.000 fans, so it's OK. Can't wait to go back when the competition kicks off!

belgend posted:Which lad from Estonia and which team are these? I guess it's a move up from a poo poo team from Norway to a poo poo team in Belgium so congrats to him I guess. Also, I looked on wiki that he picked the number 13 shirt whilst number 2 is available. Real lack of ambitions and alpha dogness in my opinion.

I will probably move back to Brussels in September so I'll be supporting all the lovely Non-Anderlechts as well this year. To recap: White Star Woluwe is now White Star Brussels FC Brussels is now RWDM Brussels Bleid-Molenbeek is now BX Brussels aka FC Kompany Union Saint-Gilloise is now Union Brussels (jk they're stil Union SG and the greatest) I also agree that Cercle still being in the first division is a loving farce. They beat exactly two teams that weren't goddamn Beerschot last season.

Mynor Escoe never played for Charleoi and went back to the purples in shame. JJ Ruiz left Peruwelz and hopefully will start playing for Lille. So this season I only have to care about and/or keep an eye on Club Brugge to see how Oscar Duarte and hopefully Andres Flores are doing.

Drogadon posted:Mynor Escoe never played for Charleoi and went back to the purples in shame. Duarte has (after today) 1 game left of a 2-game ban. Judging from last year he's class and he'll do well. Flores was testing here but has been sent back because he wasn't in shape. They say they'll keep an eye on him, but I don't see him returning.

Duarte owns, him and Giancarlo Gonzalez are an amazing CB pairing for us. And Flores: lol what a dumbass, just because he's the son of a footballer he thought he had it made.

Yeah I was wondering if there's a Flemish equivalent, because flemish tv is usually so much better than dutch tv. But you do get dutch channels then? (we get een and canvas on a standard subscription)

(we get een and canvas on a standard subscription) We've got Extra Time on Canvas, but it's p gash. The few times I got parts of La Tribune on RTBF it was way better. We only get the three Nederland channels but RTL XL was open for all of Europe back when I checked out VI.

I actually like extra time. It sucks if you expect highlights and in depth analysis, but that's not really what it aims to do. Rather it's just an often ammusing talk show about football.

It wasn't meant to be, I guess. We're hosed. Chelsea is now branching out to being incredibly annoying in other leagues.

There are like a million ways this could've been handled better. Why does Zulte have to be the comedy drama club this year? Bring back Beerschot.
