As crap as that project is, you can still hear the guitar work is reminiscent of early AtG at points.

Anyone read Rex Brown's book? I'm almost done with it and it's pretty interesting to see an insider perspective of all of Pantera's poo poo. Only downside is that he spends like half the book talking about how much an rear end in a top hat Vinnie is. Regardless, it's a good read.

It's okay. The first part feels more like straight out metal than Dream Theater. The instrumentals fell on the right side of gratuitous for me, but that's going to be pretty subjective.

The first part feels like something off of Train of Thought, and the rest sounds like continuation of the direction they were going with ADTOE. I'm a fan - definitely a better step than the direction they were going with Portnoy

Never understood the hate for anything At The Gates did, I liked it all.. can we push the hate onto In Flames where it's more warranted? They announced a new album for 2014 and I'm sure it's going to be just as lovely as their last 4 generic uninteresting releases. They used to be one of my favorite bands, now they've got a bunch of moron supporters getting all butthurt when anyone suggests that they should try to write actual melodeath again.

I was thinking about it for Coroner, but the lure of getting absolutely trashed in a field with everybody else at Party.San proved too much. 65e to drink for 4 days and watch about 4 bands probably isn't the best return, but it's a recurring theme. Still, already been to Hell's Pleasure and have Live Evil and Wolf Throne later.

Probably better to put this in the post-rock thread, but yes, I agree. In terms of metal stuff: I am surprised to find that I'm really digging the new Revocation album, as I don't really listen to much metal that sounds like it anymore. They seem to get the balance just about right on song writing vs guitar wank, even if they lose me a bit on tracks like Spastic. Either way, it's fast, melodic and catchy, and kind of reminds me of when I first started listening to metal. This would've been a great gateway album for me 4 or 5 years ago. Anyway, I get a real kick out of it, and am enjoying it a lot more than Chaos of Forms.

Yeah, I agree 100%. Even a riff salad tune like Spastic is full of good riffs, and the solos are absolutely killer. I'm also getting an AJFA vibe from the guitar work on both that and the new Carcass album.

e: also maybe best for the post-something thread, but Relapse put out the new True Widow album on vinyl and it sounds like poo poo. That recording was made to be pressed to vinyl and how they hosed that up I will never know.

Unless you've already seen Wintersun or Fleshgod live you should really go anyway. I saw them in New York last night and they were both incredible. I'm not that into Arsis' more recent material but they actually played a solid mix of stuff and were entertaining. Absolutely enormous pit when they played Face of My Innocence.

The crowd was everything a metal show crowd should be: enthusiastic and loud for all the bands, everyone was cool to each other, and I saw this bald mountain of a human being clear the pit at one point so two <100 pound women could grab arms and swing each other around in circles.

Oh and Wintersun played Battle Against Time (spoilered in case anyone prefers to go in blind, which ruled.
