After retiring the Spark Vark and the F-4G, the Air Force decided it was going to press hard on F-22 at the expense of basically everything else. I don't think there was any agreement with the Navy about picking up the slack.

Yeah, SOF training literally kills people from time to time. BUD/S does, and I think as recently as earlier this summer there was a bit of a row over UK SAS training killing 4 candidates in one class.

I think America's elite Delta Force selection is based off of British SAS training. I wouldn't be surprised if the British SAS were the progenitors of all the elite special forces in the English speaking world (and probably beyond).

Charlie Beckwith got the idea of a unit dedicated to counter terrorism from his tour with the British SAS. US Army Special Forces was founded by a guy that was an OSS Jedburgh and was based on his experiences as a Jedburgh. The Navy SEALs trace their heritage to World War II naval scouts and raiders and Underwater Demolition Teams. While Rangers have been around since the colonial era the modern ones trace their heritage to the World War II Ranger Battalions that were formed based on the influence of the British Commandos.

Speaking of other nations units influencing those of other countries, do any other nations have a unit like Army SF that learns foreign languages and focuses on Unconventional Warfare and Foreign Internal Defense rather than direct action and counter terrorism?

To my knowledge, the Australian SAS is modelled on the British.

As far as I know, their main thing is reconnaissance for long periods of time in enemy territory. They aren't exclusively counter terrorism, though they provide one counter-terrorism unit called TAG West. There's another one, TAG East, that's sourced from the Commandos (wiki link).

In the Soviet Union, that sort of mission fell to the KGB and GRU, though what structure or name such teams had I don't know. Also not sure if it was just them.

The Australian SAS also has a long history of working with US Army Special Forces. In 2002 there was a magazine of sorts created for the 50th Anniversary of Army SF and in it is an article written by the commander of the Australian SAS mentioning this bond between the two units. Apparently there's a personnel exchange between the Australian SAS and 1st Special Forces Group that's highly sought after. He mentions that the exchanged personnel even deploy with their host units.

He also mentions the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam which worked mainly with the 5th Special Forces Group. 3 Australians of the AATTV received the Victoria Cross while deployed with 5th Group. Warrant Officers Keith Payne, Raymond Simpson and Kevin Wheatley. The first two were Mobile Strike Force company commanders for 5th Group, the last guy was involved with the Civilian Irregular Defense Group conducted by 5th Group.

The article by the Australian SAS commander is the only one by a foreign country in the 50th SF anniversary Golden Jubilee magazine thing. The only one other non Army SF unit mentioned is the British SAS being taught HALO jumping by the Army SF HALO committee.

There are quite a few interesting articles and old school SF photos. It's a huge book/magazine though, would take a long time to scan everything.

edit: here's what it looks like http://www.amazon.com/Special-Forces-First-Golden-Jubilee/dp/B001AZW2VE
Pretty sure it's a product of the Special Forces Association.

It's an Mi-24, they're still air inlets. They just look like window air conditioner units.

Edit: It might be an Mi-35M, which is still a variant of the -24.

I took care of an old SEAL from the Vietnam-Cold War era a while back. He was dying of respiratory failure but was still with it for the most part. Mostly he liked to talk about his church, and every time I would leave his room he would say something along the lines of, "May God bless you in all you do, doctor."

One day he starting talking about his career...going through BUD/S, putting others through it as an instructor, stuff he did in 'Nam. Then he started going off on the people who spat on them and called them baby-killers when they got back. He was a little out of it but completely coherent. Then he asked me if I had ever been deployed and how they treated me when I got back. I said everyone was nice, etc. He pulled off his oxygen mask, looked straight at me, and said,

"You let me know if they ever treat you like they treated us and I will gut them like the loving cocksucking cowards they are. I will rip my knife up their guts so they can watch themselves bleed out like those fuckers who thought they could ambush us back in *some place I've never heard of*."

He nodded off to sleep. That afternoon, he was back to the pleasant church-going man who never even said "hell" much less threatened to kill anyone. The way he said it was a combination of stone cold and "been there, done that" routine. I have to admit I had a :stare: moment.

My interactions with any SF/SOF guys were when they came into Germany as escorts for their injured bros or as patients themselves. They were easy to spot: beards, rough looking, fake names. They were always really cool and would come into the mission control room to bullshit or look at the pretty medical girls.

The SEALs I interacted with outside of boot camp were all big babies but that was in a very specific and very non-combat situation

The ones in bootcamp were cool because they'd sit at the bottom of the pool pretending to be sharks when we were pretending to escape a sinking ship, and they'd grab the girls' feet as they tried to swim to the life rafts. Motherfuckers didn't need scuba gear, they'd just come up every few minutes for a quick breath and then back down there, chilling and grabbing feet.

Since when do carrier air wings have commodores? You mean the CAG? And no, it doesn't surprise me in the least. Every dollar spent on the F-35 is a dollar he's not getting for maintenance, training, fuel, etc., and poorly managed programs that just hemorrhage money tend to piss off pretty much everyone that deals with budgets.

SOF chat- we helped support a bunch of SOF during my first two tours in Iraq. Army SF were always chill as gently caress and awesome to deal with. SEALs were mostly blowhards who liked to talk down and brag to everyone they were SEALs. The ones that weren't were awesome dudes who if you didn't know about them you would have thought they were state department employees. AF dudes (TacP and CCT) we did stuff with were the chillest of the chill and gave no fucks, but were somehow completely professional.

Cool. We don't have any rangers, though. I've done a bit of digging, and apparently TF 66 was comprised of SASR, 2Cdo and SOER. Which is more or less all the SF we have.
