ThatPazuzu posted:There's this little old lady who works at my university named Ann. She's everyone's grandma and likes to come up to you to remind you to have a nice day and tell you that the weather outside looks nice even if it isn't. She's a geriatric ray of sunshine. A while ago they were going to fire her because she was too old to wipe down tables quickly. The students petitioned and the school decided that, instead of firing lovely old Ann, they'd promote her to "hospitality director". Hello fellow Witt student I didn't even have to look at the image to know you who you were talking about. I graduated in 2008, but I still remember Ann. Just talking to her always made my day better. She's like the best grandma ever.

Not necessarily. As long as it's before 10 or 11 AM for the guy in California, it's feasible that everyone would be up during their normal hours. But it's pretty awesome how technology lets us do this from all across the globe... I have a friend who was able to join her family in unwrapping presents on Christmas from overseas because her parents shipped over a box with all her presents wrapped in it, she waited until night time on the 25th and her family Skyped her in on Christmas morning and they all got to open in turn and ooh and ahh over each others' presents.

Late to the bone marrow party but SA actually saved a man's life. Leukemia. 70 something. Someone a year ago or so made a thread telling people about registering for the BaM program, which I had never heard of. I sent out for the kit, and 3 months later I was getting a call saying I could be a match. They did the testing and next thing you know I'm playing on my phone while machines filter my blood. And if anyone's worried, it's rare they do the drill. And if money's an issue, they pay for your travel and any meals you miss coming to the appointments. I'm not hurting though, so I never took advantage of that. Here's something I found very uplifting, though not very cute. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LezpDgtGLo A poem by a man with OCD

Matthew Update Thanks in no small part to the help of goons from this thread, and the inspiration of knowing that people do care, he'll be flying home for good with two packs of gear on October 1st. The rest of his stuff will follow by truck on the 15th. He said the biggest joy he's getting out of this, besides being home again, is that he'll be back in time for Veterans Day. He's going to stand outside the local VA cemetery with his Class A's on (dress uniform) to salute those who come to visit and pass on the love. If I could hug each of you, I would.

A group of men from the NY National Guard adopt puppies! http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57601576/afghan-vets-reunited-in-n.y-with-8-battlefield-dogs/ I told my husband about this and broke into tears. Few things make me happier than happy doggies! Check out the video, it will make your heart melt. PORT JEFFERSON STATION, N.Y. Army reunions have been held as long as soldiers have been going off to war, yet a reunion this week was perhaps like no other in history. National Guard soldiers from New York who befriended a stray dog while on patrol in Afghanistan were reunited with the 65-pound mixed breed and her seven rambunctious puppies after the animals arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport on Wednesday. The reunion was made possible by the efforts of a Long Island pet rescue organization whose motto is: "Paws of War — No Buddy Left Behind." "They really became part of the family to us," 1st Lt. Joseph LaPenta of Staten Island said. The soldiers befriended the dog they called Sheba after arriving in Afghanistan in January. She sometimes joined them on patrol, chasing away other stray dogs that may have threatened the soldiers, they said. In March, Sheba had a litter of seven puppies. Because Sheba was weakened from the births, they nursed her and the puppies back to health, feeding her their allotment of beef jerky and MREs — Army issued "meals ready to eat." Later, relatives sent bags of dog food from home. Soon, however, the soldiers learned their base would be closed as part of the U.S. drawn down in Afghanistan. "It really broke our hearts that we might have to leave them there" LaPenta said. That's when Staff Sgt. Edwin Caba of Long Beach sprang into action and contacted an old high school teacher. She put him in touch with a Long Island group called Guardians of Rescue, which has for several years collected donations to bring dogs back from combat zones. They had rescued about 20 when the request came in for help getting Sheba and her pups. "We won't turn our back on the servicemen and we won't turn our back on the dogs," said Guardians of Rescue president Robert Misseri.

Going back to janitor talk, the head janitor at my high school was an awesome dude. He was always super friendly, and took tons of pride in his work. He was also a great substitute teacher for our English classes, because he knew more about English and literature than most of our actual teachers did. He had his Masters degree in English Lit and a teaching certificate, but he sincerely liked his work as head janitor so much that he worked it as his main job because he wanted to and just did subbing for extra money even though he started the other way around. I can't personally understand what he saw in it, but if he enjoyed it and it made him happy, you can't really argue with that.

I visited my folks yesterday just to see how they're doing and hang out for a bit, and after we had dinner we sat out on their back patio enjoying the weather. I felt something on my arm and when I looked down, whatever it was had already disappeared - I figured it was flies or whatever, no big deal. Until my mom looked over and said "Looking for what was on your arm? It was a jumping spider, it's hiding under the arm of the chair." Sure enough, a little brown one was curiously crawling around on the arm, peeking out from under the chair arm once in a while, almost like he was scoping me out. I kept looking down and trying to coax him onto my hand but he was freakin' FAST and I didn't want to hurt or kill him. One of the last times I checked on the arm, he disappeared...and I swear within 2-3 seconds he'd climbed the back of the chair, and was perched on the edge by my left shoulder. He sat there for a few minutes easy, twirling around, checking things out, once in a while looking up at me with a look I could only discern as "curious puppy". He eventually went back down the arm of the chair, crawled onto my left wrist, and I put him on the empty chair beside me and just watched him dart around and play "hide and seek" around the arm of the chair for a couple minutes before I went back into the house. Today at church, we celebrated the Nativity of the Theotokos (the birth of the Virgin Mary). Since it's her birthday, they made her a birthday cake. My phone's camera is broken, so I can't show you, but rest assured it was pretty The priest said, "Well, it's a birthday. You can't have a birthday with no cake, right?"
