My female Men's Rights Activist friend has a new post out. In today's episode we learn that picking out one bad Men's Rights Activist and claiming they represent the movement is bad, but picking out the worst feminist you can find and claiming they represent the movement is legitimate because feminism is a hive mind and a game of one-upping each other, so the worst feminist ends up bringing all other feminists closer to her position and only the worst feminists get to lead the movement. Also the goals of feminism are: 1) Legislative enslavement of men. 2) Treachery of an unimaginable scale. For reference: NAFAL means "Not All Feminists Are Like That." Inspector Zenigata posted:I kinda disagree with the notion that mentioning the race of a person in a story is necessarily an indication of prejudice or whatever. Sometimes it helps to garnish anecdotes with specific details like that to help people visualize what happened better. Of course, more often than not it is used by people who are (sub)consciously racist, but in a case like this, a Chinese kid talking about somebody of his own race doing something funny, doesn't strike me as being particularly problematic. Though now that I'm writing it out, he may have been sort of implying, possibly unintentionally that something sketchy like that would be more likely to be done by somebody of a different race. Kinda like litotes in a roundabout way; the affirmation of a preconceived notion (other races are more likely to do something like that) by the negation of its opposite (a Chinese person doing something sketchy is weird, implying that a person of a different race doing something equally sketchy wouldn't be). I'm just curious, what are your guys' thoughts on this? Am I missing something? I feel like a loving idiot right now. Why does (the bolded part) matter? Why do I, the listener, need to know the race of the subject if that person's race is irrelevant? By mentioning that detail you imply that said detail matters to the story. That doesn't mean you're racist - the fact that a white guy used the n-word rather than a black guy using it is relevant and worth mentioning, but isn't a racist thing to notice (usually) - but often those kinds of details are a form of dog-whistle racism.

Inspector Zenigata posted:I didn't mean to imply that mentioning race in anecdotes is ever a good idea, I meant more that I understand why some people, without any malice, use details about the people in their stories, like race, hair color, attire, etc, to flesh them out. That's usually racism or misogyny as well.

Fatkraken posted:It's not medically valid either. When cancer (breast cancer inparticular actually) was first characterised and treatments were being developed, one of the first ideas was to remove the affected body part. But it didn't work very well, because that's not how cancer works. Still they tried it. First lumpectomies. Then Mastectomies. Then bilateral mastectomies, then what was called "radical mastectomy" where they dug deeper and went for related lymph nodes and underlying chest muscle. It didn't usually work any better than simply removing the cancerous lump because cancer doesn't spread that way, and people were subjected to more and more radical surgeries which often removed huge parts of their bodies to little effect and the cancers came back ANYWAY. When we actually started to understand what cancer is and how it works, the most radical of the surgeries were retired for the vast majority of cases because the outcomes simply weren't that great for how life altering the surgeries were. Good to know if my friend brings this up again. Thanks!

If you're interested in a very accessible book about the history of cancer treatments and the societal attitude towards cancer, I highly recommend this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/Emperor-All-Maladies-Siddhartha-Mukherjee/dp/0007250924 It's a really interesting look at the biology of the disease-group, the history and sociology of treatments, even the politics of the search for treatments. It'll arm you with a plethora of diverse responses to stupid Facebook posts about miracle cures, research and so forth. On a similar note, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bad-Pharma-How-Medicine-Broken/dp/000749808X/ref=tmm_pap_title_0 is a must read for combating idiots when it comes to pharmaceutical companies, because they really ARE terrible awful bastards but just not in the way that facebook forwards would have you believe. This book is meticulously researched and very accessible I know that 99% of the people actually posting this bullshit are completely unreceptive to reality, but you might just prevent another reader being led down a bad path

The Chinese part is relevant if it was a commentary on the practices of Apple. The most expensive spot in the world for purchasing Iphones is Mainland China, and a lot of Chinese people on vacation will buy a bunch of Iphones and then resell them in China for money. Cash fits into this because most Chinese people don't actually use credit cards. Bam, anecdote solved.
