Château Frontenac. A hotel built in the late 19th century in Quebec City. It resembles the Banff hotel because they were both owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway and both were designed by the same architect. The hotel was the location of the 1943 Quebec conference between the Brits, Canadians, and Americans where they discussed strategy for the war and initiated the planning of the invasion of Normandy. The tour goes through the room FDR stayed in during the conference and being in it is definitely a weird feeling. The hotel itself is incredibly beautiful.

One of Goldman Sach's 27 Detroit warehouses that stores most of the world's aluminum. Multiple times a day, forklift drivers move the Aluminum from warehouse to warehouse in a scheme that costs consumers billions of dollars a year. quote:MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. —Hundreds of millions of times a day, thirsty Americans open a can of soda, beer or juice. And every time they do it, they pay a fraction of a penny more because of a shrewd maneuver by Goldman Sachs and other financial players that ultimately costs consumers billions of dollars. Thankfully, deregulation has probably kept the complexity of these schemes down, passing savings directly to the consumer.

The Vancouver Public Library: One of the only interesting buildings in this Architectural wasteland we call a city. Case in point: Though I will admit the Law Courts Building is interesting, from the outside it looks like an urban greenhouse: From the inside and at the reflecting pool on top, it's pretty impressive. Out at UBC we also have a great example of Brutalism with Buchanan Tower. Everyone calls it the giant waffle tower. Last time I was up on the top floor I was able to pick away bits of concrete from the walls.

One of the lowest average household incomes in Toronto ~ $22k PA. It was rezoned as a middle class neighbourhood in the 1960's and the city allowed high rise developers to build these huge ghastly towers for young singles. But all potential residents decided they were too ugly and moved to the suburbs instead. To cut their losses, the City bought the towers for public housing and it's one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the downtown area. Across the street, and I mean literally across the street, is Rosedale. One of the richest areas of the city, average household income is $220,000 PA. Average house sale price in Rosedale in 2008 was over $1M. Here are some single family homes from Rosedale! ASDA and Tesco approach the upcoming holiday season with typical corporate sensitivity: (Article: ASDA and Tesco withdraw 'psycho' patient outfits.) This quite understandably drew severe complaints from actual mental patients who don't like being represented as homicidal maniacs, and who tweeted their own 'mental patient' outfits in response.

There were several protests here in town after Clement Meric was killed, being from Brittany. I saw this in town and it made me pretty happy I live here. The top poster is an Antifa punk concert, the bottom line says "Rennes is red and black" and the bottom poster is in solidarity with Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a leftist Lebanese militant imprisoned by France since the 1980s. Brittany will not be a refuge for fascists. Various t-shirts worn by Antifa at protests. The bottom-right one is against a large airport to be built in the east of Brittany that will kill all the other airports in the region. A local Antifa protest a couple of years back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F04Piq-eKss&t=114s And for architecturechat, this is the coolest modern building in my town, Les Horizons. A certain percentage of apartments (I don't know how many) are for low-income families. And since I'm Brittanyposting, have a video of leftist Breton militants in the 70's planting a Breton flag on Notre Dame in Paris, and when the police gathered around to watch it get pulled down they spray painted buses to protest the trial of 11 members of the Breton Liberation Front. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odTTbuEU5Zg Also, have the Internationale in Breton. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_9_OWk-sRh8 Soviet Commubot fucked around with this message at 23:12 on Sep 26, 2013 |

There isn't an attractive building on that whole campus, but along the continuum of "bad" to "good", it's a safe bet that the better the building, the more oil money went into it. Of course they've got nothing on this monstrosity:

It is difficult to find a good perspective view, but the Australian Parliament House has grass on top, so ner! Current Parliament House at the back, Old Parliament House in front of it, now a Democracy Museum. Edit: on the lawn of Old Parliament House there is a permanent Aboriginal Tent Embassy, which was erected in 1972. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aboriginal_Tent_Embassy They talk about trying to get rid of it often, but it is still there, despite people occasionally trying to burn it down.
