They seemed to change a whole lot for that episode. I don't think it was bad episode really, but it wasn't as good as I was hoping for either. It definitely seems like they wanted to minimize the cliffhanger ending aspect.

I think they could have lingered on the wall titan for a bit at the end there, but the rest of it was really well done. I was worried that they had messed up Armin's character arc for the show, but his conversation with Jean made it better and emphasized their different views on how far they're willing to go. Even the little conversation that Eren had with Mikasa was pretty good. For the wall titan, Jean and Armin are actually walking along looking at the wall at the end there (I honestly thought that that's where the wall reveal would happen) and I guess it's plausible that they spot it then, the Survey Corps then covers it up, and Hanji interrogates Pastor Nick. It's not like the wall titan was always visible and no one noticed, the piece of the wall didn't break away until nearly sunset. I think it was a pretty decent season overall. And the shot of the other trainees riding along makes me excited for the Castle Utgart arc.

They should have just gone with a proper cliffhanger, it's not like anyone would be going 'Oh, well, that's that story over then' anyway.

I quite liked the bit after the end credits. The episode itself, while pretty mediocre, kept me wondering what was going to happen next despite knowing what was going to happen next. So. Props for that. Edit: The manga-readers reactions to the wall titan are really surprising. In this thread and the anime thread. Think about it from the perspective of someone who has only seen the anime and that reveal is actually pretty good. It leaves them thinking "what the gently caress was that?" That's really what the animators will want right now. You know. People who want to see another season. Bisensual fucked around with this message at 23:21 on Sep 28, 2013 |

It's such a brief flash, and the angle doesn't really make it clear that there's a titan in the wall as opposed to "oh poo poo the wall is crumbling and there's a titan right on the other side." Then again, I recall there was initially some confusion about that when the original chapter came out too, so maybe it just can't be helped.

Putting aside the manga perspective being unambiguous unless you think the wall is one and a half feet thick the chapter's closing text next to the titan in the wall is something like "There's a titan in the wall?!" so anyone confused was really beyond help.

Alas, the writers failed to build the tension and excitement in this episode and assumed Being Awesome The Whole Time would substitute for emotional engagement. and also the way they handled the wall titan reveal was real bad but that was them trying to have their cake and finish the series while also eating it by setting up a cliffhanger and it fails, naturally

AoT is so wildly inconsistent, but there were clearly a lot of production issues going on. You might get 1 episode that looks amazing then 3 that are good to bad. Or some that are just aired unfinished. Bluray releases so far have fixed a lot of the problems.

That was pretty drat disappointing. Guy couldn't even draw faces on the characters right. Can't wait to see how he'll be drawing by the last chapter.

Alright manga thread! I barreled through the entire manga last week, and this poo poo is bananas in the absolute best possible way. That Colossal Reveal had me shouting "Wait, what? Oh my god" at 3 in the morning. I've gone through most of this thread since then. ...it was a little weird to see myself quoted a few times. I stand by my assumption that Colossal and Female are related somehow - probably not siblings, but cousins at least. Watching the anime finale today, in conjunction with the recent manga first-transformation speculation that you gotta eat a dude to become sentient again, I'm thinking that Annie's first transformation involved her eating her mother, or someone who was very close to her. Her dad talked about making the whole world hate her - and matricidal mutants are pretty easily hated. Even if the whole mandatory-cannibalism thing isn't true, it's possible that it's something the Titan hierarchy tells its recruits. Much like the mafia forcing new recruits to commit initiation crimes, it's an irrevocable act that would drive a wedge between them and humanity. How could you go back to your old life, once you've eaten someone, and people know you've done it? I'm just being polite in case a casual anime viewer takes an ill-advised quick scan of the most recent posts. \/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/ Squidster fucked around with this message at 03:55 on Sep 29, 2013 |

I assume that the Wall Cult guys found the miner and shut him up, but Hanji did talk about tunneling titans. Maybe the earth underground is swarming with them, torpid and confused, always trying to find their way back up in sunlight. We've seen one in a castle basement already.

Picked up the manga from chapter 32 after the show ended because what the gently caress was that and am caught up now after a few hours. Now I wish they had given the adaptation another episode just to properly troll the poo poo out of the audience with a better cliffhanger. Holy poo poo I thought I had the plot of this more or less figured out (in kinda broad strokes, I admit) but Kongman changed everything. This has come a long way from the simple premise of 'there are big dudes who eat people and we keep them at bay behind huge walls'.

So I'm not a manga reader, trying to decide if I really should switch over or not. What was so wrong with how the anime ended though? I've been poking around and I'm not really seeing what was conveyed differently in the manga, except the quick coverup part that I assume will happen scene 1 in season 2. Is this just people hating quick stingers?

Is this just people hating quick stingers? The Titan-wall reveal got more time and focus in the manga, as its a key element to where the plot is going. It was handled with a little more care than a quick half-second glimpse of a titan who could be in the wall, or peering through the wall. Without going into details, it wasn't just Scary Thing, it was a Scary Thing that a number of the characters are aware of, discuss, and are terrified by. Also, this is a dangerous thread full of holy poo poo spoiler minefields, man.

Anyways, the conclusion that was added in, Hanji doesn't get the scene where she goes insane was weird. When Eren comes out of titan-form and is talking to Mikasa instead of Armin. What? Why change that. And then they just ignore the wall titan and push him off into a post-credits scene. It just didn't feel right and was the most un-true to the manga I've seen the series be as of yet.
