Are there any recommendations for something in the 50" range, < $1000? I posted a few pages back about an LG 60PN6500 Plasma. Had it now for almost 2 months and it's only getting worse burn in. I've timed it and can't have a static spot on the screen for even 2 hours without it being burnt in, I talked to LG's customer support people and they're acting like that's par for the course for plasmas and there was nothing I could do (or that they would do). Running one of the screen flashing videos for 22 straight hours isn't even fixing some of them now. It's way past Amazon's return policy but I called them and told them what was going on and they're taking it back for a full refund. gently caress this TV so much, or gently caress plasmas, or gently caress LG. Or all 3 I don't even know.

I can't comment on plasmas, but I have yet to find a piece of LG hardware/software that I like. If the hardware's okay, the software is poo poo. If the software's okay, the hardware is poo poo. If they both seem okay, wait a month.

Their customer support seems to be straight out of those shady warranty places like Warrentech where they repeatedly hang up on you during 'transfers' to get out of the claim. Took 4 calls to finally get them to tell me a definite no. Just ordered a Sharp Aquos LC-60LE550 LED. My last TV before this LG was a Sharp Aquos LCD and I loved it, just needed something bigger.

Well, was going to buy a new TV this fall but our cat was ill, then had to replace all 4 tires on my vehicle, so there went savings. Kitty is better, though.  Anyways now I find out Panasonic is pulling out of the plasma business. I realize that for the money the ST series is probably the best there is, but is the regular S series any good? Does it still trounce LCD? I know it's missing some features and it doesn't have 3D, but I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with the TCP**S60 series. Few weeks ago when I was at Walmart (I know, bear with me) they had a bunch of LCD TV's showing some computer animated movie and one of the sets had the whole soap opera effect going on. I don't know how people can watch TV like that, it looked terrible. Very late edit: Apparently the Panasonic E60 series of LCD televisions is pretty drat good for the price. Still wish I didn't have to pay the Canada tax.

Would I be a complete idiot to buy a 50" TV that's not 1080p in 2013? I'd really like a bigger TV than my 40" now that I moved to a huge place, and I think it's come down to the 65" S60 or Samsung's 50" 720p set, which seems to have pretty rave reviews and represent an awesome value. http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-500-tv/

So, I haven't received it yet, but incase I do...I might have lucked out on the early morning Wal-Mart screwups and nabbed a 64" Samsung PN64F5300 for $300 ($400 after tax & shipping). Any word on how this measure up to my slightly dated, but super sharp Panasonic Viera TC-P50GT25? Seems like there's some lag issues with the Samsung in FPSs, but I'm hoping I won't notice it much... Displaylag.com lists the input lag at 47ms, or just under three frames. It's borderline noticeable; you definitely wouldn't want to go higher.

About to wall mount a Samsung UN46F5500 and am not sure what I should buy. I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882876036 solely due to it's high rating. I've seen cheaper on Amazon with good ratings but I wasn't sure the best way to make sure I get a quality product. Also, is there any way I can confirm the brackets will line up with the TV ahead of time? (I don't own the TV yet either)

Just make sure the stand is compatible with the display's VESA mount dimensions. In the case of the UN46F5500, it's 400x400, which that Newegg one you linked can do.

What is the difference between getting an OLED 1080p HDTV and a 4k LED HDTV in terms of picture quality? Everyone seems to agree that OLED is superior to LED and Plasma, but why are the two OLED HDTVs available only come in 1080p?

Because it's the hot new budding technology and they're not going to bother doing anything less. The resolution is a small portion of the price tag, they'd basically be trying to sell a four thousand dollar 720p tv next to a four thousand dollar 1080p tv.

How a display handles contrast, black level, color and motion trump resolution almost always and OLED should be superior in all those categories.

Sony usually wins at both of these. I got a Samsung and I can't really notice any input lag so I'm talking about differences of frames in fighting games or something, if you're that hardcore. The more bells & whistles the TV advertises, the better it will look in general (Smart TV, 3D, 120hz etc). Don't think of these as gimmicks, once you have them you'll really enjoy them.

Is there a TV/Home Theater Remote thread somewhere I'm not seeing? My brother has a Harmony remote, but now has more devices than that remote will support. I don't even know if Logitech is still the only game in town. I've never liked their interface (although my brother showed me they do have a web interface that is, sadly, better than the application they made), so I was wondering if something else outclassed them finally.

Harmony's the best known, and the one most A/V goons recommend. You may have to upgrade to a newer, fancier, more expensive one. Eventually smartphones will be good choice for universal remotes, as more devices support apps for them. Harmony actually has a smartphone looking one too, but it's stupid expensive. You could probably try the Video Quick Questions thread, or the Quick Audio Questions thread, both in this subforum. I should get one myself. Juggling three remotes is getting old.

That Insignia deal looks really good and is the exact size I'm looking for, But are they utter poo poo? I have a friend with one and it looks pretty good but the thing is he leaves it in Vivid mode all the time so I can't really tell if it looks good or not. Would they be comparable to say Vizio? which is what I have right now and like.

The Smart models, ST60, have high lag. The non-Smart S60s are pretty good though. Picture quality on S60s isn't quite as good as ST60s but should still be very good. Burn-in shouldn't be a concern. You might see some retention after a gaming binge but nothing permanent.

MMO cooldowns and such; but it would still need to be for hours and hours at a time. There may be noticeable temporary image retention from especially bright menu elements. For the most part however, I've found that static menus and dashboards/desktops are more of a problem than games themselves. And plasma displays will have screen burn protection options in their menus; turning off with no source signal, pixel orbiter/shifting, inbuilt screen savers, and others. Combined with screen dimming/savers in the consoles/PCs themselves, I've yet to have a problem, whether using my Mac, viewing multiple episodes in 4:3 format, or long 360 CoD sessions. Are we going to be seeing a big drop in price on the S60s now that Panasonic is calling it quits in plasma? I've been on the fence a bunch over the past 6 months or so about getting a new TV, and I've almost pulled the trigger on an S60 a couple times, but held off because I wanted to see if it's going down even further when new models come out, but without new models, are they just gonna stick around at where they're at now or are they getting fire-sold on Black Friday?

I was wondering if there is a good recommendation for a new DVD player to pick up that would be compatible with the S60. Or, if this is not the right thread for such a question, which thread would serve me better. Edit: Or would I be better served to just get a complete "home theater" system? I'm currently trying to research both dvd players and sound systems, but it looks like there may be some items that combine the two.
