I know this is a "thing" about that movie and it's a cool story, but I can't think of a time when something has failed on set that we've just kept on rolling anyway for the hell of it. If there's a pyrotechnics problem usually the entire set stops for safety reasons. It's more likely that Nolan and the UPM were in contact with the pyro team who said, "give us a second" and the only person not in-the-know was Ledger.
