Have you done searches as a customer to see if your keywords are working?

Sometimes I feel like this.

Those little birds are so cute :3: I may need to buy one as a gift for someone - I'd get one for our house, but I have a feeling the cats would probably perceive it as a toy and wreck it!

Not really, is there any specific strategy for that? Like, should I just search the keyword without specifying a category and see what comes up? All my stuff comes up when searching for "parrot" under the dolls and miniatures> plush category, for instance.

Thanks! I'm planning to start making cat toys too. I've made a couple for my cats already and they've been very popular. :3:

I'm no expert, but the idea is to pretend you're the kind of person who you think will buy your stuff and do searches as if you're that person.

Here is my shop. Slowly getting more leather goods made. I'm considering making storage/tool bags for bicycles, and eventually custom tooled seats. Does anyone know how flooded the market is with that sort of thing?

There isn't a lot about it that the general Etsy crowd would like. But there is a lot about it that I do!

"Etsy crowd" Cons: Customers can cancel orders, you get paid 2x a month direct bank transfer, there is a 20% commission on sales to people you don't "originate" as members, there is no handmade requirement, it's semi-juried, they play favorites and heavily promote some stores and not others, no shipping interface, no paypal, huge emphasis on social media, you cannot contact customer (no email provided), US only sellers and buyers

Cons (in my opinion): No shipping calculator yet (it's in the works, I think, as they ask you to list the weight), can't ask for different shipping amounts for variations on your items, they intervene when there is a customer issue (that is good and bad I suppose. One time I forgot a bar of soap and the customer had to go through Opensky first, then they contacted me, sort of a hassle), no good, consolidated way to maintain inventory (I'd love a simple tool that shows you inventory at a glance)

Pros (in my opinion): fee-free to customers you originate except credit card fee (3% or whatever), excellent customer service for shop owners including phone, they heavily promote my shop, they harness social media quite well, they do sales and promotions and other events, they have a huge following of built-in customers, clean-looking site design, great social media "feed" I can use to promote sales and such, no public visibility of sales numbers, love that it is semi-juried (invitation only? Not sure), good design for "variations" and such, no listing fees

I don't mind the "commercial" items at all on the site, but I would imagine it is a HUGE turn off to the Etsy crowd especially in light of the recent policy changes. I'm positive the 20% fee and the 2x month payment system wouldn't stand. People don't even like to wait 3 days for their direct checkout payments!

So I don't think it's a good fit for probably most of Etsy, but it's a great fit for me. I definitely benefit from them playing "favorites" as I'm frequently in their email promotions, facebook page, front page, etc, and it drives a lot of traffic to me that I don't have to work for.

I have some private issues with Etsy that basically soured me to the site. So I am definitely concentrating on other venues.

Thank you, I am going to check it out. I have a lot of inventory (150+ ) light switch covers that are really just not selling at all on Etsy, some of which I've had dating back to when I started my business (5 years), so I'm kind of just looking at different options, since it's not really selling on Etsy even for 50% off and I'm tired of spending money to list on things that are not selling. so I have no issues with the 20% fee. If it would work well for that, I wouldn't have an issue 'jumping ship'.

The thing that I am not so sure of is the whole social networking part. I really just have zero time to invest in social networking so I just don't do it. How easy is it to get the 20 followers they want you to have before your store is fully activated?

altazakin

If you have friends and family that would do it, or Facebook fans, it's pretty easy/straightforward! They have to be brand new to os. There was one other point I meant to mention but forgot. I'll think of it! Ooh yeah! No coupon codes, and you have the option of allowing opensky to occasionally offer free shipping on your items, and allowing customer to use credits they earn, for up to 20% off. You get more exposure if you participate.

Rathina
Jan 8, 2001
I think I'm just going to blow it off for now, simply because of the having to get 20 new to opensky followers in 14 days. I just don't think it will happen for me, and I don't have the time to invest in moving product over if my shop never gets activated. A real bummer, because it really looks like it could be a good website. If they ever change that requirement, please let me know....or if you have any pull ;) ;)

Perhaps the first post could be edited to include a list of goons who sell on Etsy, links to their shops, and a brief description of what they offer?

I personally know I'd be checking out everyone's shops frequently if the information were presented concisely there rather than spread out through the thread.
