This is pretty cool. Twice a year, metal4africa.com, the website that I help run does a festival with between 8 and 9 local bands from Southern Africa. Every now and then we try to get in a band from a neighbouring country and this year in January we got Overthrust from Botswana. Somebody filmed their full set and popped it up on Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEVhkRMRG1k

I'm fascinated by the spread of metal on the African continent, and a lot of it seems to correlate directly to infrastructure. Botswana does not have the best internet connectivity and as a result the music is still very raw, primal and straightforward, whereas Kenya which has a far better connection to the outside world is producing much more "modern" metal. Then you've got Egypt and Tunisia which seem to spawn way more European-esque bands (lots of power and prog stuff there) because of proximity.

One day I'll have done enough research to write a proper piece about it, but the lay of the land as it is seems to change drastically the further north you go - South Africa being the exception to the rule.

I know this post is like a week old but thanks for this. I remember a year ago or so, a goon posted something on Botswana metal scene. Picked up the Crackdust album from that and been jamming to it since then. I'm digging the Botswana sound.

Having seen them a couple of times (and as a parent myself) definitely yes. Johan always seemed to be having a good time bantering with the crowd and the pits are relatively tame. It's a fun rock show, not some INVOKING THE DARK RITUAL routine. I'm in the US; I don't know if that makes a difference.

Depending on the size of the venue it's usually pretty feasible to stay out of pits entirely at most shows. My folks wouldn't let me go to shows alone until I was 16 or so, so my dad had the pleasure of sitting through his fair share of metal concerts. He was always able to find a "safe" place to stand while he waited to drive my friends and I home afterward.

Oh, definitely. Pits can be avoided and usually even the most frenzied idiots will dial it down if there's a kid standing nearby. He'll be fine. I'd be a little more leery if you had a kid sister because older guys at metal shows can be incredibly awful around teenage girls.

Melodeath pits are surprisingly cordial. A good friend of mine (fellow goon Aeolius) lost his glasses in an In Flames pit back in '02 and a bunch of people were crouched down on the floor in the middle of the loving pit helping him look for the lens that popped out.

Well, Nachtmystium is done. Can't say I didn't see that coming.

Blake Judd posted:

Alright everyone - it's official: Nachtmystium is R.I.P. Today, I turn 31 years old and as a gift to myself, as sad as it makes me to do this, I'm letting go of something that I've put blood, sweat and tears into for the last 13 1/2 years. It's been an amazing ride full of extreme highs and extreme lows. It's taken me around the world to places I'd never have imagined getting to see / experience. I've toured with some of my favorite bands ever and met some of the most amazing people I could ever have asked to meet. These experiences are fond memories that I will be able to reflect on until the day I die and be eternally grateful for having in my mind.

There are two releases left that are yet to come out: a split 10" MLP with The Many, which will be released on Plastik Musik in the coming months, and the bands epitaph LP, "The World We Left Behind", to be released world wide on CD / LP / digitally by Century Media Records in spring, 2014. A vinyl box set of the bands entire discography is also in the works and will hopefully see the light of day sometime in 2014.

I leave behind the following discography....works that all have a special, sentimental value to me, with each of them representing a moment in time in my life that I'd chosen to capture via music that I then chose to put out there for you all to experience if you chose to do so. From beginning to end, the following titles are the legacy of Nachtmystium's existence:

- "Holocaust OF Eternity" demo cassette, 2000
- "Unholy Terrorist Cult" demo CD-r, 2001
- "The Ancient Battlefield" split demo cassette with ZALNIK, 2001
- "Live Onslaught" live cassette, 2002
- "Reign Of The Malicious" CD / LP / picture LP, cassette, 2002
- "Nachtmystium" MCD / MLP, 2002
- "Live Blitzkrieg" LP, 2003
- "The First Attacks: Demos 2000-2001" CD / LP, 2003
- "Demise" CD / LP / picture LP / cassette, 2003
- Nachtmystium / Xasthur split 7" EP, 2004
- "Eulogy IV" MCD / MLP / picture LP, 2004
- "Live Onslaught #2" CD-r, 2005
- "Visual Propaganda: Live From the Pits of Damnation" live DVD, 2005
- "Daze West" split 7" EP with Krieg, 2005
- "Instinct: Decay" CD / LP / picture LP, 2006
- "Worldfall" MCD / MLP / picture LP, 2008
- "Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. I" CD / LP, 2008
- "Doomsday Derelicts" MCD / MLP, 2009
- "Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II" CD / LP, 2010
- "Live At Roadburn MMX" CD / LP, 2011
- Nachtmystium / Murmur - Split 7" EP, 2011
- "As Made" 7" EP, 2012
- "Silencing Machine" CD / LP, 2012
- Nachtmystium / The Many split 7" EP, 2014 (pending release)
- "The World We Left Behind" CD / LP, 2014 (pending release)

Thank you to all the individuals I've worked with, regardless of the nature of our personal relationships today, for helping be a part of this monstrous discography. A very special thank you to Chris Maycock (aka Chris Black) and Sanford Parker for your rolls as producers on the majority of the bands full-length albums and later EP's, I could've never made these records without your guys' guidance and musical / studio prowess. Lastly, thanks to you fans world-wide who've supported the band over the last 13 1/2 years. You are the people I owe the most to, as you helped me bring a dream of mine since my earliest memories of being alive to be able to be a musician and a live performer come to life, I feel that between the year 1999 and today in late 2013, I've lived more than most people do in a lifetime through my experiences with Nachtmystium, and every one of you who ever bought a tape, a CD, an LP, a tshirt, a concert ticket, a poster, a patch, etc., you were the people that truly helped bring this dream of mine to reality. I am eternally grateful to you all for helping make this happen.

So, I'll leave you all with a live video of our track "Ghosts Of Grace", to play here at the end of this very finalizing statement of mine. This song has kind of been the 'anthem' of the bands discography and was always the biggest 'crowd pleaser' from my perspective when performing it live. This particular recording was taken in San Francisco, CA while on the North American Plague tour with our friends Marduk in December of 2009, while the band was touring for our most successful album, "Assassins: Black Meddle Pt. I", which was a high point in our career certainly. Please enjoy the music Nachtmystium has left behind for all of you for years to come. The band may be gone, but the recordings will live forever and I hope that they will be played by all of you at some point time and time again.

Thanks again to all of you who've been a part of this wild ride. I'll have the memories to enjoy for the rest of my life, and for this I am truly grateful.

"And the storm left nothing, and the storm left all....and the storm took nothing, and the storm took all"
