How did everyone watch the show? I restricted myself to only 2 episodes a day. I'd come home for lunch and watch the first, then I'd watch the second before bed. It took me about two months and it still felt too short.

I just binged through it the first time I watched it, watching episodes whenever I had free time.

I really enjoyed the routine of watching it twice a day. I think I deliberately chose lunchtime and nighttime so I wouldn't be as tempted to watch a dozen episodes in a row.

I got spoiled on basically all of the major plot twists a long time ago (I really don't remember how or why, but I can assume that I probably wasn't all that interested at the time if spoilers didn't bother me) but have only just recently started watching, and by recently I mean last night.

I turned away from the computer to find that seven hours had passed.

Being spoiled probably isn't the ideal way to experience it, but it does sort of feel like watching a really good Napoleon movie when you know what happens at Waterloo.

I did a few six hour marathons while watching 1-2 episodes at a time on days between those. I don't remember how long it took me to finish it but there were quite a few days where I didn't watch it at all, too, plus I had to reformat my hard drive a little into season four (my computer literally crashed while watching the show, just after Reuenthal was impaled through the chest) which killed my motivation for a month.

I worked as a proctor in college, so I had a lot of free time on my hands to get paid doing homework and watching anime. Start to finish I think I had it all wrapped up in a week or two.

It took me about a month and a half. I'd watch a couple episodes a week at work and then a couple more weeknights before bed. I'd watch more when the big moments were happening Kircheis and Yang's finales.

If people are seeing this thread pop up and haven't watched it, you're really doing yourself a disservice by not watching. No matter how long it takes to watch it all, it's worth it.

You little bastards :(

When I first started reading this thread there were only subtitles for the first ~60 episodes. Eventually people got tired of waiting for CentralAnime to release the rest and went and got some batch torrent of some crappy subs from Hong Kong that were barely intelligible. For a while I even banished myself from the thread because suddenly people were discussing the last 2 seasons, and it was probably at least a year until I finally sat down and watched the final episode. Darn kids these days don't know how good you got it :corsair:

Oh man. I'm just finishing up season one, and KIRUHIAISU :( It's really nice to be early into a series that you know is going to be one of those things that you are going to later wish you could forget and watch all over again. It's hard to believe that this is apparently going to get better after the first season. I can only think of a couple episodes that I suspect were filler, but they were still good (the one where that noble attempts to assassinate the Kaiser with the staff comes to mind).

I also recognize a couple of the background music pieces from stuff I played back in youth symphony in high school.

edit: I really hope that Oberstein actually decided to take in this old dalmatian as a pet, because it would be pretty funny. His character is really interesting and I genuinely do not know where his "arc" is going to go.

Ah, thanks. A couple are things that aren't really part of what I'd called "popular" classical music either, at least among laypeople. Dvorak's 8th Symphony is often overshadowed by his 9th (From the New World), for example.

The music if anything really makes the show what it is. Nothing like 100 000 ship battles to some classy rear end music :getin:

The music is definitely invaluable to the show in general, but I think the fleet battles would be pretty tedious without it. I probably would have been fast forwarding through stock-animation-of-battleship-blowing-up-#3 even on my first watch if it weren't doing so to Mahler/Bruckner/etc.

It's really interesting to see how the characters, particularly Reinhardt, are developing. It seems like ever since Kirheis's death he's been gradually losing his direction and doing a bunch of morally questionable stuff, with his more moral actions usually being the result of him "conversing" with an imaginary Kirheis. Also, it seems like his mullet has been getting longer as the episodes go on.

One question: Do they ever explain how/why the population went from ~300 billion in pre-Empire times and somehow was reduced to what seems like 30-40 billion in the present? I just wathced the episode where Julian is watching the documentary on his way to Heinessen and that stood out to me.

Man I typed up a spergy fanwanky post but I don't remember how comprehensive that episode or any following episodes were regarding that topic, so I'll just summarize it as this. I think it's an unrealistically huge drop, but the Goldenbaums were basically a dynasty of Space Hitlers to the extent that calling them Space Hitlers is actually not a harsh enough epithet but it'll have to do because in the real world we mercifully have yet to top Hitler. And they ruled for hundreds of years. And also waged a long incredibly bloody war that kills millions of people in solitary battles just in the part of the war shown in the series. A war that has gone on for, what, a hundred years before the show started? Yeah.

The music in the show is amazing. I'm surprised that more sci fi series or space operas don't take up using classical music.

Kircheis is definitely one of the best characters in the show, even after his death. He ties in the historic narrative as a character who died before his potential could have been realised. Even after his death and near the end of the series, the other characters in the Empire are still asking what Kircheis would have done in their situation.

As to the population drop, I think it was due to war, eugenics as well as the split between the Empire and the Alliance. Goldenbaum forcibly sterilised the poor and the handicapped and he abolished the various social support programs which I think implied that people simply starved.

IIRC, the soundtrack took shape due to financial, not artistic constraints. NHK just had this whole huge library of classical music they already owned the performance licenses to.

And alternatively when my japan worshiping, sailor-moon loving 14yo raided my anime collection for new stuff, she hated this one. not enough magic princesses or something. Well thats OK, at least a 14yo girl actually IS the demographic for that drivel. (She loved Banner/Crest of the stars. I guess at least we have that in common.)

I'm at episode 20 and speeding through. It's an incredible show, I like its explicit leftism. I'm a bit concerned about Phezzan though, since I heard that it will turn out that they were behind a lot of things, I generally dislike that kind of plot move, because it essentially substitutes the real plot with a conspiracy-like deus ex machina. I don't expect it will be quite like that though, and that there will be a twist to it like most things on this show.

Its kinda funny because(not a big spoiler but yeah) its even deeper then just phezzan, something that gets foreshadowed and hinted at frequently enough

*Really huge episode 80+ spoilers*

the terrarism is an interesting faction to add to the two main ones. Very relevant to modern day politics. I'm mad that they killed Yang Wenli, just finished that episode, but it is more interesting than him dying in battle. Still, pretty bummed right now how underwhelming his death was..

Yeah I skipped the next episode previews 99% of the time anyway. I can watch the next episode whenever I want and love the series already, who needs a teaser? Especially if you're watching multiple episodes in succession, it's just padding like the OP and ED to be skipped over (not that some of those aren't nice songs).

That has a narrative point in accentuating how pointless their course of action was, though, as well as showing how they could be hosed with to make it even more untenable.
