ILL ON PZONES posted:Dude they are trying to gently caress up Office. Last time I thought about buying it, they didn't even want to sell it. They want you on Office 365, which is a cloud app you have to pay monthly/yearly for, and they also want you to be using their cloud storage service which is totally different than Google's because we're Microsoft and we promise we won't use your data to compete against you/sell to advertisers/the NSA. My university switched to Office 365, and I'm sure they aren't the only ones to do so. But I can't believe just how stupid it sounds. A monthly/yearly fee for Office? What the hell is this poo poo? As for commercials: gently caress that K-Mart ad for all eternity. Holy poo poo that thing pisses me off.

For a while it was a real pain not to have Word but now any good text editor can read and export to .doc well enough.

Even at $50 dollars a month, Creative Cloud is actually decent for what you're getting out of it. For what you are getting now from CC, it would require buying the top tier Creative Suite at a few thousand dollars. In addition, there's applications that you can find a cheap and easy alternative, too, like Flash and Premiere.

It was actually nice when only anglophiles and history buffs knew about it, a representation of how the British were expected to act during WWII even in the face of utter defeat. And now it's just a stupid GEEK CHIC thing for some reason where the parody is more popular than anything. Ugh.

I work at a hospital and they've had the standard "Keep calm and carry on" posters up for years. I'm not sure if it's due to the meme or someone in administration just thought the motto was a good idea. EDIT: \/ Canadian. Close enough I suppose. I think that the reason is the meme is still around is that the original source material is essentially public domain since it was both developed by the (British) government as well as being released used in 1939. It's pretty much the British version of Rosie the Riveter (discounting the Ronnie the Bren Gun Girl for a moment) and "We Can Do It!".

It's cheap and easy and requires zero effort to co-opt for your own brand. It's like how everybody made a Harlem Shake video because you don't have to actually do anything creative, just flail in front of a camera for 10 seconds and hit "upload".

Yeah, but even with viral sensations, memes have become notorious IP traps. One just needs to look at Rage Comics and Slenderman, memes that look like they're public domain but still have a creator behind it that can easily swoop in with a pack of lawyers and take all their profits. If Bauuer, the DJ who created that snippet used in those Harlem Shake videos, wanted to enforce his copyright, he has full legal right to do so. He probably won't because the viral videos acted like advertising for the single and got him the top of the Billboard 100 for five weeks in a row. Reading through the wikipedia article on it, "Keep Calm" almost had the same thing, where some uncreative douchebags tried to copyright the term in the EU and the UK, but got their asses handed to them when both nations said they the slogan had been in circulation before their claim and had no trade origin for them to have a legitimate claim to. It very much depends on which sector you're talking about too, Microsoft going bye bye in mobile phones for example would change nothing, them going bye bye in word processors or operating systems would be quite different. None of that is happening though.

The most likely scenario would be something similar to HP spinning off their medical devices into a separate company, although hopefully Microsoft isn't dumb enough to do that since their equivalent to that part of the company is basically the Office Team.

I know, but I'm saying, if I was insanely rich that would be the one exception in terms of buying a Lexus. The only other situation I can see is if you like how reliable Toyota/Honda's were, and trust the brand. (including Acura in this argument). Audi, BMW, and Mercedes seem far more appealing to me in the "gently caress you, I'm rich" category.

There's a commercial for some car or another that has one for girls and one for guys. In both cases it starts with them throwing a dart at a map to pick a place to go. In the guy's one, it highlights all the cool poo poo you can do with the car and has them go on a crazy adventure with a car chase in San Francisco. In the girl's one, it highlights all the ways that the car can drive itself so you don't have to watch for obstacles or learn to park and has them go shoe shopping.
