Almost every Doctor Who episode, hell Doctor Who almost as a whole, sounds like a steaming shitpile if you just explain it in a couple quick paragraphs. That's very nearly the point of the thing, to me, that what should very well fail to work manages to pull together to be entertaining.

Statues that only move when you're not looking at them grab you and drag you to 1966.

Yup. Even good episodes sound dumb when boiled down to fragmentary plot points. But it's very in right now for Goons to poo poo on Moffat, so they'll hate on it before it's even aired.

Giant rolling pepper pots that kill you while screaming about it.

Robots that just really, really want you inside them.

Hell, how stupid Doctor Who sounds on the outside is a big part of why I put off getting into it for so long. I don't regret it, but determining the quality of episode of this show based on a summary alone doesn't work. I'm surprised Moffat doesn't at least have a little good will saved up still from the 50th, as that seems to be generally well liked even a few weeks out.

While I get the reference, it reminds me of a very special episode I enjoyed in a dream where J.K. Simmons played the Master opposite Capaldi, guest starring R. Lee Ermey as some other Time Lord (The Gunny?), that was basically just an hour of three old men yelling obscenities at each other.

Tap "A" to drink!!!

Things can be judged independently of themselves. It's great that the Anniversary Special was good, but that doesn't mean anything either way for the Christmas special. It isn't anything exclusive to the Doctor Who fandom.

I hope it's a good story because regeneration stories tend to be good in my opinion, but I thought Series 7 was bad so my faith is tepid at best where the Anniversary Special is the lone good blimp surrounded by badness.

Also, I don't know if people have talked about it - but Series 8 will air in August of next year without interruption.

Anyone even vaguely familiar with the pro-wrestling spoiler thread will know that episode recaps are often phoned in by people who are barely paying attention, misconstrue important elements and get others just plain wrong.

An episode of Smackdown that looks utter poo poo on paper often turns out to be pretty good.

I'm hoping that the special only sounds awful because it's filtered through to us by a person willing to spoil Doctor Who in the first place. :colbert:

One of the main reasons the 50th was so good is that it avoided all the Moffat Masterplan bollocks that has been so bad lately. The Christmas episode, on the other hand, is going to be all about that poo poo. The silence and all that. Trenzalore. It's Moffat's last chance to resolve all that nonsense before Matt Smith leaves and he only has one episode to do it in.

There's pretty much no way it can be good.

Not saying that, just saying that posting "this SUX" every update without qualifying what the problem is is kind of annoying.

I'm reserving judgement for the most part. I only skimmed the outline, sounds alright.

There were parts of season 7 I liked. There were concepts that worked on their own like the Crimson Horror, or at least parts of flawed episodes that were a lot of fun like Matt Smith's Cyberplanner. And I liked the Silence episodes of season 6 except for the shoehorned amy rory drama, I liked the Good Man Goes to War, the entire Silence plot was pretty good until Let's Kill Hitler.

This episode doesn't have any amy-rory drama or the kids Clara was babysitting hence it will probably be at least okay.

There episodes in series 7 I liked as well (Cold War, Hide, Journey to the Centre of the Tardis, Town Called Mercy, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship), I'm referring to the ongoing Silence Will Fall/Trenzalore plot only here. And I didn't think it was too necessary to go into what the specific problems with it are, since that has been gone over at length in this thread and the other thread.

I'm as big a defender of the wait-and-see approach to each episode as anyone but let's not say things we can't take back. There is approximately an icecube's chance in hell of Moffat writing a satisfying conclusion to the Silence arc considering his track record of setting up big very important issues and then resolving them with anticlimax.

cool but crude
So this leaked outline seems to be pretty accurate and I have to say, I am really not looking forward to this. Even for an outline, the concept is pretty weak and I don't trust Moffat to fill in the blanks, particularly to give us a compelling reasons to why all his enemies team up yet again to attack this one little town. I am also not a fan of backing the hero in a corner with no possibility to win, only to then get him out of it with a deus ex machina.

All in all, this reminds me a lot of End of Time in terms of themes, mainly trying to force the awesomeness of the Doctor on us. It's generally a problem of new who, primarily since Moffat took over, that I often have the feeling that they are telling us how incredible amazing the Doctor is instead of showing it to us. More so under Moffat because of his tendency to resolve his build-ups somewhat anticlimactically.

edit: And before anybody starts another pointless debate over the exact definition of deus ex machina, what I mean here is simply an outside force that shows up and saves the heroes rear end out of what has been build up to be an utterly hopeless situation otherwise.
