poo poo not pissing me off: I'm easily jaded by technology but my new gig has some amazing user stuff. I can badge print using a central queue that all the printers talk to. I'm given my own wireless headset to use at any desk in the open office plan, which have dual widescreen monitors and docking stations. Also, given a corded usb headset to use with the soft phone that works over the VPN. I can video conference with peers around the world, in fact I VC'ed with a guy in Asia and some guys in Europe. I'm blown away by all of this. As an aside not related to work, I just got off a 15 minute phone call that cost me next to nothing to Australia over Google Voice.

That, and the fact that the drat server kept shutting off and flashing a hardware error light every week, were the reasons we wanted to finally be rid of the drat thing.

Might be combining evils into mega evil, but we use the MFD fax integration and Fax to email / print to Fax on them instead of dealing with Fax hardware. Works well for us.

Today its not really what's pissing me off, its what's causing me guilt. Client pays for a scanner and asks me to install it on their server. They only have a server available and the scanner doesn't support it. Now the client is pissed off, which I get and I don't really care about. I asked my manager who deals with this sort of thing which would be admin (apparently). He also wants to have a word with the person in admin who scheduled it for me to do. This is where the guilt comes in. This person quite literally just assigned the work because the person usually assigning it isn't in. The manager is probably going to make them feel like crap over making a mistake, even though it wasn't their mistake, but they're going to take the fall for it regardless, even though we've said that she wasn't the one who sent out the scanner. Just, loving, argh. Office politics annoys me. Now the admin girl is annoyed at me, the client is annoyed at me and i haven't even called the clients manager yet. Long day ahead.

So my job has gone the metric route, and now is going the 'new process to follow every week' route. It seems like every new process I learn, I forget another one, or my work gets that much slower. I am not sure if this is because I am slowing down as I get into my 40's, or I've lost my passion, or burnout or whatever, but work is not fun. For those of you who are older and in IT, is there a point where you hit a wall? It seems like I am fixing the same things over and over, and nothing is new, and I feel like a grumpy old man.

Tried to get out, economy crashed, back in my poo poo-pod I go. I'm in this weird state where I don't have the energy to learn something completely new, because by the time I'm done my 9-5 of stressful work, I just want to cook supper and enjoy my evening with the wife. And I'm not in a large enough center to have anywhere to "move" to, so my work-from-home job it is. I don't feel like I've hit a wall...just that I'm stuck in the same room and the door is really stuck and just ~effort~ to do anything else.

Thanks for the fax talk guys. The EMR software that uses the fax server points to an IP so it might be possible to use a cloud solution. Edit: haha yeah, I'd love to get out of IT as well I think but it's hard to find jobs that pay anything close to what I can make in IT. Until I can take afford a severe pay cut I think I'm stuck in IT until my kid clears college. So I don't know maybe 20 more years?

Man, we had a fun one today. Someone hooked a workstation up to our network whose hostname was set to "localhost" and it automatically registered itself in our Infoblox system as "localhost.companyname.net" on our internal domain, which all of our servers have as a DNS search domain. We have a bunch of AIX servers which default to using DNS before the hosts file (because AIX), so they all suddenly started resolving the hostname "localhost" as one of our DHCP workstation IPs. Luckily it didn't appear to break anything except a bunch of monitoring checks that used that hostname for a command, though (and it's lucky it broke those, otherwise I wouldn't have seen any alerts and we might never have known about it until something actually did go horribly wrong). Our DNS guy nuked the offending entry and add a bogus "localhost" host to Infoblox with a null MAC so nothing else can register as that hostname again. Of course my RHEL boxes didn't care because they're all configured properly and use the hosts file first.

Pissing me off: The wonderful combination of Certain old Gigabyte Motherboards and Seagate HDDs causing a 1TB drive to show as ~30MB. A BIOS update and the use of SeaTools for DOS (they have a handy bootable 8.5MB image on the Seagate site) and my friend is back in business. It did take a while convincing him that yes I did have to update the BIOS. Now onto having a 3 day weekend to get stuff done around the house Playing my PS4 finally and the inevitable cleanup of beer bottles that will pile up next to my laz-e-boy

Localhost. isn't resolving to anything other than 127.0.0.1 and the local machine. But since some hosts are searching the local domain first before resolving localhost localhost.whatever.com is messing stuff up.

Do you guys mean making a host, eg. hoobastank.contoso.com A 127.0.0.1 or doing something like localhost.contoso.com A 10.1.2.3.4 The latter is pretty weird, and probably very broken, but the former is common depending on what you're trying to do.

Edit: The only thing worse than a 17-hour work day is a 17-hour work "day" that lasts from noon Saturday till 5AM Sunday. With no comp time.

I look younger than I am There's no way out for me and staying current is close to impossible now. My workload went from very low to very high over a six month period so there's no time for anything other than my task list. So this is it until I can't get an I.T. job that pays my bills, at which point I'll... no idea.

So I'll be external Monday, Thursday and 1 hour every Friday for the next 3~ months. Boss is telling me to come in before and after the 1 hour assignments. ... For some reason this really pisses me off, even though I understand the (company) motivation. I guess it's because my Boss seems to give everyone the rest of the day off when poo poo like that is forced on them, but because of his weird hate-boner against me right now, I am exempt.
