Why can't kids listen to good music like Bobby Vinton and Neil Sedaka? All of a sudden I want Miley Cyrus to become this generation's Madonna and just be influential and important for decades to make that comic even stupider. Also, I like that in a thread full of the most evil opinions imaginable, loving Streeter reminiscing about the Beatles is the one that is attracting all our rage (and rightly so).

This week there's a decent amount of Nye/Ham debate stuff. Lietha is still posting reruns, but he did have one new thing. Ham takes a hand off the debate, allowing Nye to seize it with ease. Nuckols still cannot draw. None of the usual suspects covered the debate at all, which I think speaks loads for how well the creationism/ID movement is doing. If only Asay hadn't stopped cartooning...

JJ weighs in on Keystone again. I've been hearing of five or so reports that claim the pipeline will be peachy-keen environmentally, but I haven't looked into the sources of the reports to see if they're legitimate or just fronts for oil companies. To JJ's credit, he doesn't just brush off environmentalists are "wacko loons" or anything, but suggest they focus on more pressing issues instead of one thing that is (reportedly) not a big deal.
# ? Feb 9, 2014 22:00 |
The problem with Keystone is that too much focus is on the potential environmental impact and not enough on the economic impact. What would the United States actually get out of building Keystone, besides the temporary jobs associated with literally building the pipeline? Half of the pipeline has already been built, and it's driven oil prices down in the Midwest. If we complete the pipeline all the way to Texas, those oil prices will spike and it'll be easier for Canada to export its oil to China, increasing overall cost of oil purchasing for the United States. And Canada has steadfastly refused to give America right of first refusal on oil purchases through Keystone, so we can't be sure that won't be something they'll do.

Claiming it will have "no negative environmental impact" is pretty dumb since I'm sure all of those reports are written under the assumption that there will be no problems whatsoever with the pipe. So the pipe won't cause ANY environmental problem provided it doesn't break and spew oil everywhere? Gee, why doesn't that dumb ol' Obama let us build it already! I mean, oil companies never make mistakes!
# ? Feb 9, 2014 22:06 |
The real problem is the report basically assumes we'll find a way to buy tar sands oil with or without the pipeline. I'm not saying that's a bad assumption, but it means the "environmental impact" doesn't include actually using the oil only how it is delivered. Considering trains can derail and trucks can crash, there might not be that much of a difference between the pipeline and other means of transport. The bigger problem is all the extra carbon all that tar sands oil will spew out, but that isn't covered in the report.
