Animal Kingdom was loving great. I was so happy and surprised when Jacki Weaver got an Oscar nomination. I mean, of course the Oscars are bullshit, but then sometimes they're not. Since Animal Kingdom, both Weaver and Ben Mendelsohn, the other standout of the film, have picked up quite a few good roles in American films. The Rover looks great. Guy Pearce rules.

Irisi posted:Yeah, it's hard to see how they could film the more...unusual...parts of Under the Skin without it looking utterly ridiculous and descending into farcical nonsense. The book is pretty riveting, but mainly because of the quality of the writing, not because of it's bizarre plot. I've never read it, but early reviews are calling it a sister film to The Man Who Fell to Earth so I'm sure there's more weird things in it than you'd imagine. I also can't loving wait because of that.

Fan trailer alert I posted this over in the Youtube thread in GBS the other day, but a special effects guy made a teaser trailer for a hypothetical remake of The Warriors set in LA in the 90's. I actually wish this was a real thing because I'd pay real money to watch it in a theatre. Not to get to granular, but for me the best part of that fake-trailer is the very last shot. The whole trailer is building, and building. Tension is ratcheting up, and then they show the scream but cut it off. Somehow cutting it off has an emotional effect that's just perfect. It feels like I've seen that used somewhere before.

Honestly it's awesome for a fan effort. Really good. Comparing to anything else though and it just looks like clips from a music video shot on a DSLR. The sound design is actually pretty drat good though.

I love doppelganger stories. If you live in NYC long enough you'll see carbon copies of people you know walking around all the time. I actually saw someone on the street once that looked remarkably like me, and I'm telling you it's one of the creepiest experiences I've had. I spent that whole day a little paranoid.

The Snowpiercer feud appears to be over. Weinstein has agreed to show the uncut version of the movie in the USA, even though he still believes the movie is "too intelligent" for the average moviegoer. The catch: Snowpiercer will only get a limited release in handpicked theaters.

I don't know what it is, but I'm not getting anything out of Transcendence trailers. It looks so banal and overly serious and somehow I can see it on the faces of the actors, everyone looks bored and bothered to be there. I hope I am wrong, because there are some elements that could be cool, but those trailers are very limp.

It just seems so tonally inconsistent and incoherent. So, what, is Johnny Depp's character a protagonist or an antagonist? Are the Luddite terrorists heroic or villainous? What's going on?
|
# ? Feb 12, 2014 08:24 |

Seems pretty straight-forward. Depp is doing research on copying/digitizing human minds, is killed by some religious nut, but not before his consciousness is uploaded. Then he basically turns into Skynet/the Lawnmower Man/the Puppeteer, and starts performing nefarious deeds.

# ? Feb 12, 2014 08:39 |

The way the trailer is cut it looks like he starts doing the very old "beep boop emotions are illogical and irrelevant to my advanced brain I will upload you all now" routine, which you'd think an AI smarter than the sum total of human beings would be above. Y'know, an AI that smart would be smart enough to recognize that it needs to make a case for itself and recognize that most people aren't going to adopt its way of thinking overnight if at all, instead of just hacking the whole internet or whatever and forcing it on humanity with nanomachines. Now that's probably just the way the trailer is cut and I'm willing to give the movie the benefit of the doubt to impress me, but I really don't hold much optimism in the end.

Oh god, being forced to watch that before either 'Her' or 'Saving Mr. Banks' was probably the most uncomfortably entertaining experience I've had in a theater. If only no one else was there, otherwise we'd be shouting 'Save us our white savior!', and 'It is not magic that allows me to do such things, but it is the whitness of my skin.'
