Have either of you played around with the ESC much? It's been a winter wonderland here, so I haven't been able to really get into the turns yet. So far I gather that you press it once for limited ESC, and hold it down to turn it off completely? And back to these tires, when Ford says that the tires on it aren't meant for temperatures under 40 degrees, they aren't joking.

Been thinking about getting a Focus ST since reading about the goonmobiles at the start of this thread. Thanks to everyone for their impressions so far. Finally had the chance to test drive one today. Here's my minddump: The salesman was great; he let me take it out alone for as long as I want, with the proviso that I came back before closing. I had it for a good 5 hours, burned about 1/2 their gas tank. Fully loaded. I was on the stock Goodyear F1s and it was a clear day -1c (30 f). I'm coming from a 2007 poverty spec 5mt Subaru Legacy. Pros: -The interior is well screwed together, miles ahead of any Subaru (I'm a big subie fanboy). LED lights everywhere, to nice effect. Do these cars stay tight or do they develop creaks and rattles? -Plenty of legroom. I have long legs and it's a big reason why I'm passing on a 2014 WRX (the other being the utterly embarrassing interior). -First FWD car I've driven without a nose heavy "plowing" feel. I can't remember if the GTI I tested last year felt nose heavy, I only remember it being devoid of any soul. -It corners flat and just sticks to the road. -I was afraid of the wide turning circle. The big test for me was the parking I have to back into at home. No problem. Need to do 3 point turns more often. That's the price you pay I suppose. -Amazing supple suspension. Firm, very little body roll, sharp turn in, yet soaks up bumps with cool sophistication. -with 1.8 turns lock to lock steering I was afraid it would feel darty. Not the case. -good stereo and I like MFT. The caveat being I'm coming from a Subaru so should not be trusted to give any opinion on car stereo or tech. -Nice clutch with progressive engagement. Easy to drive smoothly, unlike my Leggy, "...oh you want a smooth 1-2 upshift? Haha why don't I smack you upside the head instead?". -I like the styling. It's got a great rear end and looks good in white. Cons -I want to love them but man, do the Recaros make my lower back ache! I'm desperately telling myself they'll break in and I'll get used to them. In Canada you can only get the ST with Recaros. -No interor storage space. I had to put my phone in the cupholder, my keys and wallet on the pax seat. No way I could have them in my jeans pocket with the clamping Recaros. -Yup that arm rest really gets in the way of shifting. I saw a Ford Racing short shifter for the ST that would solve the issue, but you really need to tear apart the interior trim bits to install. I'm afraid of taking apart the trim, breaking clips and the interior getting all squeaky and rattly? -Speaking of shifters, it has a really long throw. -I was afraid of torque steer. It's strangely inconsistent. Sometimes when I put the balls to the wall, there was no torque steer whatsoever, one time it scared the poo poo from me, with the steering wheel sawing back and forth in my hands, the car literally shooting into the oncoming lane. I suppose it's more to do with the road surface. Drive like a sane person and torque steer is a non-issue. -It doesn't have the mechanical rawness and connection of my Leggy. Indeed, I still enjoyed driving my Subie home, even though it's a base model family sedan. Will miss AWD. Well, I'm very close to pulling the trigger. They offered me decent trade in value; I should really go for another extended test and see if my back screams again... man it would be such a shame if I have to pass on the car because of the seats.

My old GLI Recarros were comfy as hell, although they made your rear end sweat like crazy cause of the really tight weave.

I find one press of the ESC button (ford calls this "Sport Mode") to be nice for whipping around back roads - still lets you slide around a bit. Full off is a long press, I'll use that for autox and tracking when its warm out.

Stop posting your new Fiesta STs it's getting tempting. I was planning on waiting until summer and see if I can reasonably afford to get one. Although I do have a friend who just had his new Chevy Sonic totaled by some dipshit rear-ending him. Maybe I should be a good friend and sell him my SES and then I can buy an ST to replace it.

I found the armrest is too high, so my right arm and shoulder were at an awkward position when shifting into 2-4-6 I went back today and the salesman suggested I take another solo drive and try to find a comfortable position. Found a magic spot by raising the seat and wheel a bit and not sitting all the way back. Much more comfortable and my back felt better, too. Went to the local Ford dealership and they had a red Fiesta ST on the lot. Got to take it for a test drive and pretty much fell in love. I didn't have any intention of buying a car today, in fact I was just going along with my lady friend because she was the one planning on testing several cars as she desperately wants a new one. I ended up buying one from a sister dealership, black with moonroof, Recaros and nav at 5% APR (I have terrible credit).Took almost two hours to do the paperwork and she was extremely pissed at me afterwards. I felt really bad, it's my first new car ever but the feeling afterwards once I realized I was a huge douchebag has left me not in the best of moods. Oh well, such is life. I take delivery in 5-7 days and at least I have that to look forward to. Not looking forward to her not speaking with me any time soon...

Delivery of my hatch has been bumped back until tomorrow, but I'm in the office from 7am until 7:20pm. Would have been nice if they'd let me know it was delayed, or let me know anything, instead of me burning a day of leave I probably needed.

Finally bit the bullet and got snows for the Fiesta ST - Blizzak WS-60's in the stock rubberband 205-40-R17. Seem to work great to far! The ABS is way too intrusive in the snow but most new cars are.

I never get why people put snows on the stock wheels. A set of steelies and TPMS aren't that expensive, and then you get to drop down a size or two for that sweet, sweet cushy sidewall.

I had to sign a piece of paper saying I wouldn't install tire chains when I bought my Fiesta because it would cause issues with the torque vectoring system. Mine will never see snow though so it won't be a problem.

I find it odd that this thread about the Focus and Fiesta ST has a poll with the WRX/STI as the clear winner. So, here's the 14' WRX I bought about 3 weeks ago now.  Coming from a Mazdaspeed Miata there are things that I love about the car and things that I miss. - Smooth power delivery/torque compared to the thrashy high-strung BP engine. - Confidence inspiring grip on the street - Interior is an improvement from what I'm used to - Massive by comparison with functionality to match - Turn in and steering precision are light years behind the miata, as expected - Serious STI brembo envy, coming from the miata with a wilwood BBK I feel like I need to be super careful with braking. I did heavily cross shop the FWD hot hatches and have extensively driven stock/stage 1/stage 2 GTI's but with performance in mind the WRX really cannot be beaten for its price bracket. joe944 fucked around with this message at 22:19 on Feb 10, 2014 |

When I go to trade up to the R next year, I'll be able to put my brand new stock wheels and tires back on the car to trade it in. They have like 1200 miles on them. Have been sitting in the garage for the last 2 1/2 years  Sadly, my 15" steelies won't fit on the R. Should be able to sell em for a slight loss though as they should only have like 6k miles on them when they come off. Just need to decide if I want to use the stock 18"s for winter or sell those cause I'm gonna put my current 19"s on the R. I likes my Petrols.

My last car was an 07 Impreza base , and I loved it to death. When I started looking for cars I originally wanted a '12 or '13 WRX, but locally even those were more expensive than the Fiesta ST. I would surely have one if I had the money though. For the other Fiesta ST'ers, some people on another car board are recommending that you check the clamps for the turbo piping. I guess quite a few have found that the clamps are loose and need tightening. I'm not sure if this is something that just happens with turbo cars, they were actually not tightened, or it's just something people are doing and thinking they are improving the performance.

Not sure about that Fiesta in particular but turbo cars are well known for blowing off hoses under boost. The rubber one on the MSM would swell like a balloon and eventually pop off completely, leaving you stranded unless you had some tools or just manhandled it back on, but the number of problems with the factory turbo set up on the car are mind blowing.

I do a pretty even mix of street and highway driving. Overall average is about 21, although I've seen 25 on longer highway cruises. My buddy has a 13' and we managed 27 on a trip to reno.

Yeah, the gas mileage was the straw that broke the camel's back for the WRX for me, and I also found it significantly less comfortable than the ST on the freeway. For reference, my commute is a mix of city and highway in the Boston area, and I'm pulling 27.5 right now. Also, I can't live up to Vermonter stereotypes. Too many WRXs. Right now in the office parking lot there's a Mk6 GTI, a 2007ish WRX and my ST. Not bad. Just need someone to get an MS3.

Since there's no "Cheap Shitbox Discussion Thread" I should mention that the Nissan Micra is now going to be available in Canada (sorry, US). They're shooting for an MSRP of $9998 for the base model. Considering Mitsubishi has been giving guidance that indicates that the Mirage in Canada is one of their last hopes for North America, I don't think their value proposal of "spend $12.5k on a 3-cylinder hatchback instead of $9.9k on a 4-cylinder hatchback" is going to hold water for long. The reason why it's in the hot hatch thread is apparently Nissan has mentioned it will have "Scion-like" upgrade packages available which makes me hope I can eventually build a Spec Micra if not a Micra Nismo.   Bonus: the announcement took special care to mention that they've made improvements to the car for Canada, such as extending the heater vents to the rear seats, and putting in a fold-flat rear seat so you can put hockey bags in it.
