If you unlock the temporal tree right away, you have access to time shield at level 4, and it's quite ridiculous. Combine that with tribeam and other typical archmage build ideas and you have a solid defensive and offensive char.

Don't put any points in it until level 10. - Psi/Absorption is not great on an Aegis shield user. You'd be better off with Psi/Focus and spamming Mindlash to get you through your first few levels. (Basically just 5/5 Mindlash and ignore the rest of the tree, if you have a Mindstar or Psionic Focus weapon in your TK slot you'll get value from this one talent through the whole game.) - Cunning/Tactical is a Defense buff. It's good if you're also buffing Dexterity, or if you've got Blur Sight (from Spell/Phantasm) running. - Spell/Enhancement is not a good fit IMHO, since you're not burning much Stamina, and I honestly don't think +11 to all your stats is worth 5/5 in the last talent. If you want more damage and durability, take a look at Chronomancy / Spacetime Folding, which also gives you some minor mobility. If you go for Spacetime Folding, then consider Spacetime Weaving (on the Generic side) in place of Conveyance. Note that Damage Displacement (from Spacetime Folding) triggers before Time and Damage shield effects, but Displacement Shield triggers after. Early levels would look like: - Mindstar in TK slot - Mindstars in your hands because your Willpower is high and your Dex sucks - Practically all damage comes from Weapon Folding and Mindlash At 50 gp you go to Last Hope and buy Combat Training: - Now you can put a point or two in Combat Accuracy and use a staff in your hands At 500gp you go to Angolwen and buy Staff Combat: - Mindstar in TK slot - Staff in your hands because PEW PEW Channel Staff Some time after level 10 you unlock Stone, and put on all your +Str gear to level up Arcane Combat. Note that a Heroism Infusion will boost your top 3 stats, so if your gear can put Str over Con/Dex/Cun then you can use the Heroism Infusion boost to qualify for talents. This is cheesy but you are an Adventurer, you are made of cheese.

Hell I struggle just to level them without dying. - Be Cornac - Unlock Rampage at level 1 - 5/5 the first Rampage talent ASAP, and get at least 1 point in the third talent as soon as you get level 8 Other than that, level STR to get into heavy armor ASAP, get better regen/healing infusions as soon as you can. Buy them if the stores have good ones. Also, try not to actually manually activate rampage during battles that might get rough. Let a hit from enemies trigger it so that if things look bad and you need to run away to heal, you have the rampage button ready to do so. If you can get your hands on a torque of psychoportation, that's even better. Basically, though they use heavy armor and huge weapons, don't think of a Cursed as a fighter that's meant to stay in the thick of combat. They've got insane move speed, use it to pick off mages ASAP and hit and run for tougher battles. Once you get 5/5 in the first two rampage tree talents and at least a point or two into the third, Cursed really start coming into their own, though. It's just getting them off the ground that takes some getting used to.

Dirk the Average posted:One of the strongest builds in the game is an Archmage putting everything into fire until they get to level 10, and then putting everything into wildfire. Generally you're best off with sticking to a single element if you have access to the second tier tree (the end of the second tier elemental trees has a sustain that reduces resistance to that element) for that element. It means that you can stack damage modifiers on your gear for a single element and wind up doing a lot more damage. Thanks for the info. I'm maxing Rune Door and might put some points into Teleport if I find I still need to be mobile. I don't think I am going to go tri-beam, right now I'm maxing everything in Air/lightning and I have 1 point in Manathrust and 2 in the first fire spell since the DOT helps. I'm still not really sure what I'm doing so I just put the 2 escort quest rewards into magic to boost it. Should I worry about the light skills at all?

I finally gave ToME another try with the creation of this thread and I'm glad I did. I had an account from a couple years ago when I first tried the game lying around with Cursed unlocked so started with that and, while fun, I've had trouble making good progress with them, I think the biggest mistake I was making was not getting hate vision and just letting myself get wrecked by stealth. This was even more of an issue on the arcane blade I tried, I totally ignored stealth detection and got wrecked in the maze even with the spellblaze shard. I think one other big mistake I keep making is not checking shops enough, especially early. I end up with a bunch of money and no idea when or what to spend it on. Are there any tricks to that? Now trying to get a Cornac Corruptor killed off through incompetence. Speaking of, where should I spend my cat points on Corruptors? I grab the tree with overkill asap and then feel weird about unlocking anything else because I'm scrambling to level the class skills I already have.

I'm still not really sure what I'm doing so I just put the 2 escort quest rewards into magic to boost it. Should I worry about the light skills at all? The first light skill (the light skill in your class tree, not the generic one unlocked by escorts) does damage and blinds at around level 4 in a really wide radius, which can be neat, but generally you're better off getting other spells first. The other skills in that tree are rather meh for an archmage. Also, take a look at the time shield in your class tree, it's instant cast, has a great shield amount, is affected by the aegis tree, and creates a healing field when it expires. It's utterly fantastic. The generic light tree that you get from escorting anorithiels (or however you spell it) is worth unlocking later on. It has an excellent heal, a shield, and an amazing debuff clearing skill as its capstone. Something to keep in mind is that you can "float" points. The last three points that you have spent can always be unspent, which means that you could, for instance, put all of your points in lightning with the exception of three points in the first fire skill, and when you get a new level, take the points out of the fire skill, place the new point you just gained in Air, and then put the three points back into fire so that you can always swap them out later if you so desire. Really your best bet right now is just messing around with stuff and seeing what you enjoy. Don't stress too much about min-maxing your character the first time you play it. One thing that I learned that helps me a lot is that some classes really benefit from focusing hard on a few skills and maxing things out quickly while other classes want to spread points out. Archmage wants to max a couple of damage skills quickly so that they can alpha strike enemies before they become a threat.

Dodge Charms posted:Yeah Torment is the big priority, after that maybe Bone because Bone Shield is really good. That makes sense. Is it worth 5/5ing? I keep maxing (literally) the blood tree because it feels so good to use and I love the flavor but is that a good idea? Drain seems good but leveling it doesn't seem to have a huge payoff and plague seems like a huge sink of points and didn't feel like it did much for me on my last run with them. Speaking of flavor, even though I'm mostly ignoring lore I have to say the 'feel' of the game from a design perspective is so very on point in my experience and classes do exactly what you'd wish they do even when that seems like it should be overpowered.

Anniversary posted:That makes sense. Is it worth 5/5ing? Bone Shield is awesome. Blood is awesome. Drain is okay damage but critical to keeping your vim up in long fights, so yeah, it's probably worth leveling. I never use Plague, but others swear by it. You can get crazy ridiculous damage out of Catalepsy but I usually prefer killing things to death rather than diseasing things to death, and yeah, it is a big investment in class points. I never liked paying the cost of that first insta-cast disease bolt either. Spells that kill people get their vim refunded, pretty sure the same thing isn't true about disease.

It seemed cool and obviously has huge damage potential but it's a bit more micromanagey than the other kill buttons. Basically you can't go wrong with: 1/1/5/1 Sanguisuge 5/5/5/5 Blood 5/1/1/5 Vim After that you might as well just close your eyes and randomly click skills. That technique will also work in dungeons, during boss fights, and in towns because holy poo poo you're a corruptor, the Best Class.

I would guess spell crit, blight damage, effect on spell crit, and spell power? Also is there a trick to balancing vim spending? I usually try to make sure I'll get refunds from kills when I use an aoe but it feels like vs bosses or a handful of strong foes you can burn through a lot of vim without refills and before drain comes of cool down. This gets especially rough on back to back adventurer encounters where there seems to be a very real damage race.

This doesn't sound like much but you'll start doing 1k+ damage with it before long and that'll pretty much top off your vim. Willpower has a slight bonus to your vim gain per kill but I wouldn't call it enough of one to actively seek out will. As for items, you want spell crit, crit mult, spellpower, blight damage and vim on spell crit. max vim might come in handy maybe but it tends to come in tiny amounts. Don't skimp on defensive bonuses, your skills won't help you much there other than blowing things up before they get to do anything.

The tooltip had me thinking it was much more complex than that. Going for defensive stats on gear makes sense. I'll need to pay more attention to shops and probably grab some better infusions too.

It's also worth noting that Drain increases in range as its talent level goes up; at level 5, it's range 10, like Soul Rot and Blood Grasp. I like to max it so that I have three LOS-range nukes and can max my Vim with a single Drain, but it really comes down to preference (and Corruptor has a LOT of great places to put class points). Diseases are incredible, but I wouldn't invest heavily into them right from the beginning. Your basic nukes and everything in Blood are better at carrying the game for you in the early levels. Later on, once you have your core blasty spells where you want them, you can start piling tons of points into your turbo ebola, because that tree gets horribly powerful once you've pumped it up a bit. edit: protip for Corruptor: when you start the game, unlearn all of your talents and immediately go to the world map.
