But how does this even happen? How did ink spray behind the printer as well as it did in front? How is there no blank spots where people/stuff were?

That's toner. It's a very fine powder, so it'll roll off of itself to under the printer. I'm assuming someone dropped a canister.

It also has a very very low melting point and an unreal static charge, so it is essentially impossible to clean off of anything.

A massive ink spill would be a blessing compared to a toner powder explosion.

So what you're saying is that the only reasonable way to clean that up is to pour ink all over it?

It's not really that dangerous. Here is a MSDS for black toner.

I worst part is whoever was responsible for that mess is going to be "the toner guy" for the rest of his career there. Five years later, when he spills a little coffee, "Uh oh, hide the toner, Chucks spilling again!"

The sudden reminder that I have no fucking clue what I'm talking about
I used to handle toner all the time at my last job. One time we ran out of toner for our big printer, but we had two extra cartridges for the small printer. So I had to take the empty from the big one and two fulls for the small, open then all up, and transfer the toner from the smalls to the big with a funnel made of paper.

It was the worst thing ever, and I'm pretty sure I have lung cancer now. That poo poo is worse than asbestos. I had to throw out the clothes I was wearing to work that day, they just never came clean.

Spraypaint has a nice habit of doing that, too, if you're a dumb college kid painting his Guitar Hero controllers in an unventilated dorm laundry room.

Back in the '90's, I worked in a print shop that had the Worst Inkjet Plotter on Earth. The ink was fed to the printheads by tiny plastic tubes connected to each ink package. The owner bought the cheapest ink he could find, meaning that halfway through a print job one of the colors would clog and you'd spend anther two hours watch the RIP slowly process the file.

One of the day shift guys got fed up and called the ink manufacturer for help. He found out that each box of ink had a mylar bag inside, and the proper procedure to clean a clog was to remove the bag of ink and gently squeeze it.

Gently.

He squeezed the cyan ink bag not-gently-enough. Another co-worker described it as a "cyan fountain of rage and obscenities". It turned his arms blue, his shirt blue, his pants blue. There were blue ceiling tiles, blue carpet, a blue CRT, blue walls.

And that stuff doesn't wash off easily. It's pretty much cyan dye. Cue several weeks of Smurf jokes, Little Boy Blew jokes, replacing the Musak with a blues CD, blue Kool-Aid in the work fridge, etc.
