Question for grappling goons that have experience with re-occuring minor injuries to digits like toes and fingers. I just got back to rolling yesterday after a good 2 months off. Over 3 months ago I had for a few weeks a really annoying injury to my right foot, big toe. Super sore, hard to pivot onto, and painful to sit on my knees in guard (so Im dangerously splaying my ankle out when Im on my knees). The pain went away after a few weeks, went back to training. Then, I had a long 2 months off due to life, and just went back yesterday and my toe was painful for a good long part of the warmup, and technique class. However, by the time (roughly after an hour) we got to free rolling, my big toe seemed to feel "warmed up" and it wasn't as painful anymore. During my 2 months off I noticed the toe pain a couple times, once after some heavy squatting and I had a wonky position, and another time when I was doing pushups and pivoting on my toes kinda hurt it. So what should I do? Usually, if I had a simple injury like this I would just obviously, take time off. But obviously, that hasn't helped because I've been out of BJJ for a good two months and its back again. Do I see a physiotherapist, a doctor? What can they do exactly? In the mean time, any tips on how to tape a big toe? Can I even tape a big down, considering the most painful part is curling my toe and putting pressure on it? I need to start icing it, thats for sure, but is there anything else I should do? Its so frustrating to have something as little as a big toe be your main injury problem.

I got real bad turf toe on both my big toes when I started bjj and it really didn't go way until I had to quit for like 2 years, I still get all squirrelly when I have to put pressure with my feets during half guard stuff

Should I just see a physiotherapist or is it worth it to see my regular doctor first? I've never really had this type of injury before, my only other one was a major one that got immediately post emergency room visit referred to a specialist.

See a sports ortho if you can. They're going to have a lot more experience with that type of injury.

back when I was 18 or so I had some popping weirdness in my hip and saw my regular doctor and it was like that old joke: doctor it hurts when I do this Well, stop doing that He basically shrugged it off and said I was young and it wasn't a big deal. Like 5 years later I went in to an ortho with some back muscle pain and he did some tests and said it was my hip being out of alignment causing the muscles in my back to shift and pull at slightly off angle, thus straining very easily and then tightening in response. He asked if my hip ever popped and I was like, "yes constantly". I did a month or so of rehab and its gotten better but still hurts all the time and I am not sure if it will ever really feel totally OK just because of the hard training for many years like this. So gently caress you family doctor for your stupid bullshit and not taking me seriously. I could have addressed this issue way earlier. Skip the regular doctor unless your insurance requires you to jump through that hoop.

She's a tough kid and has been tearing it up all over the west coast. She's currently a student of the silliest man I've ever met, Kurt Osiander. Her name is Hannah Sharp, she's a blue belt. I actually just spent the entire day in Philly painting an apartment, and boy howdy is it lovely out right now. That was not a fun drive home. Good luck to Hannah, Osiander's videos are hilarious, and next time I'm in Philly I'll try and remember to message you, we can catch a brew at Eulogy or something.

Crossposting this from the A/T MA thread Tokai University's Judo Team will be training in Georgetown (DC) Wed and Fri night this week. If you're within driving distance, I suggest coming down for the chance to get your poo poo thrown around by some top tier Judo players.

Incendiary Pig posted:Just out of curiosity, what's the normal routine for everyone else at their BJJ class? Stretching - a warmup drill, something that involves takedowns, usually - drilling some discrete techniques - loosely drilling from positions those techniques might work form to see if they match our style - rolling. Our coach emphasises the basic stuff and only rarely teaches more exotic things. The drilling is quite loose, he will give basic corrective instructions to everyone, but we don't spend that much time on it. It's very focused on live drills and whether or not something works for you. I think it's a lot cooler/more fun than the cardio - 30 minutes of drilling what the coach shows in exact detail - rolling.

Incendiary Pig posted:Just out of curiosity, what's the normal routine for everyone else at their BJJ class? Warm up for about 10 mins, learn 2 or usually 3 techniques and drill them, then some sort of live training. In the beginner classes the techniques are usually all from the same position (generally a major position like closed guard), and the live training is typically very restricted. An example might be "start with the grips we were just using, reset if someone sweeps or transitions to mount, no submissions." Then the instructor might change it up and allow submissions or start off with no grips or something. In an intermediate class (senior white belts and up) the structure is close to the same; the warmup is slightly more rigorous, we usually mix in a wrestling technique and obviously a wider variety of techniques and positions in general. Live training typically lasts longer, is freer, and sometimes starts from a standing position. They have more advanced classes that I haven't been to, but I believe the trend continues in that general direction.

NCAA Wrestling Championships Allocations came out this week. The Pac-12 holds their championship today, with the finals live tonight on the Pac-12 network. Everybody else holds their championships next weekend. The Big XII finals will be on various Fox Sports Net channels and the Big 10 finals will be on BTN. Not sure about any of the other qualifiers.

I guess the Pac-12 is live streaming all the mats at least until the finals without needing the Pac-12 network. It's almost time for March Matness. I'm going to do a thread again like last year for NCAAs. But before wrestlers can get that far they have to earn spots at nationals via their conference tournaments this weekend. Everybody but the Pac-12 is wrestling this weekend. The only conference I couldn't find streams for is the EWL. Some require subscruptions, other are free Here's the schedule for this weekend. All Times are Eastern Saturday, March 8th: SoCon Championships, at Campbell, 9:00 AM SoCon Sports (free stream) ACC Championships, at Virginia Tech, 10:00 AM ESPN3 EIWA Championships Session 1, at Penn, 10:00 AM FloWrestling Flocast EWL Championships, at Cleveland State, 10:00 AM Big Ten Championships Session 1, at Wisconsin, 11:00 AM Big 10 Digital Network MAC Championships Session 1, at Kent State, 12:00 PM FloWrestling Flocast WWC Championships, at Utah Valley, 2:00 PM Utah Valley TV Stream (I think Free stream) Big 12 Championships, at Oklahoma, 4:00 PM Campus Insiders (free stream), Finals on Fox Sports Net Big Ten Championships Session 2, at Wisconsin, 6:00 PM Big 10 Digital Network Sunday, March 9: EIWA Championships Session 2, at Penn, 10:00 AM FloWrestling Flocast Big Ten Championships Session 3, at Wisconsin, 12:00 PM Big 10 Network MAC Championships Session 2, at Kent State, 12:00 PM FloWrestling Flocast EIWA Championships Session 3, at Penn, 3:45 PM FloWrestling Flocast Even Iowa's basketball team is getting excited about it.

I joined a BJJ school this week and I've only taken one class so far, but can any of you give a newbie some advice that me any tips as to things I should/shouldn't do in class? I joined primarily as a way to get a different kind of exercise other than running, so I don't have a lot of background on etiquette and I don't want to do anything dumb or that could be considered disrespectful

Take it slow and easy during sparring, working conscientiously on specific techniques. Don't worry about winning and losing. Nothing worse than a spazzy new guy that's going too fast.

Warm up with a ton of stretching. I try to stretch for like 30 minutes before even going to class where you do even more stretching and a light warmup.
