Also, both the Pumpkins and NIN? Writers of the occasional good song, but neither of them ever managed to assemble a truly great album from start to finish.

transatlanticism is so close to the top of my list. tbh though all of death cabs albums are except something about airplanes, that one was weak. transatlanticism is so amazing to jog and run to, the root beat is so consistent throughout

'Siamese Dream' and 'The Downward Spiral' are solid from start to finish. They're certainly not top ten albums of all time material but they're decent.

I would probably say

King Crimson - Larks Tongues in Aspic
A Silver Mt Zion - Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward
Sigur Ros - Takk
Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope
Amiina - Kurr
Pink Floyd - Meddle
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol 2
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables

but then I'd probably give a different list tomorrow

I am not sure that I have a stronger emotional reaction to any other album besides Transatlanticism. Like, no other album, by anyone, ever. TBH I never really got into their stuff that preceded Trans, but you have inspired me to give it a go.

Also, Narrow Stairs is AMAZING. Plans is also quite good, but Codes and Keys is really a bit safe and boring

narrow stairs is insane. it is loving insane. i got to see them live a few weeks after it launched in australia and listened to a few narrow stairs songs live for only the second time, i am the luckiest broad

imo codes and keys is an attempt at a throwback to trans and photo album with the production values of plans and narrow stairs and it didnt work because they've progressed so far from where they started artistically that it was confused. also it doesnt help that chris is so successful as a producer now because death cab doesnt get to monopolise his creativity as much anymore

also the photo album is probably my favourite death cab album, but for some reason i wont list it in a top ten. i guess because it's mine and i don't want anyone to diss it, and bc it's mine i can't rank it anywhere. every single loving song on that album is amazing. i got an award for creative writing for my hsc creative writing exam bit and it was an adaptation of styrofoam plates

Narrow Stairs is a hugely powerful and sad album with quite a few awesomely energetic and danceable songs. But it does have Grapevine Fires which I hate. Long Division forever. Also Cath!

I thought Codes and Keys was fairly obviously a bunch of undercooked b-side songs coming from a place of contentment and stagnation, with an attempt to boost them to greatness by trying some different production techniques. However many effects and synths they layer over it can't hide that it's fundamentally really safe and poppy.

See I hate narrow stairs bar one or two tracks, Plans I very much like but it's uneven and a little to maudlin at times, Codes and Keys is indeed safe and boring.

They hit their straps with We Have the Facts, Transatlanticism and The Photo Album in my opinion.

I have trouble picking a favorite album because quite often I end up finding one or two songs by a band that I love and finding the rest of their catalogue meh, (Counting Crows and Frankie Miller Goes to Hollywood being a prime example). However:

Give Up - The Postal Service
All Hail West Texas - The Mountain Goats
Iron Maiden - Killers
The Photo Album - Death Cab
Nocturama - Nick Cave
Rock N Roll - Ryan Adams
Beautiful Sharks - Something for Kate
The 59' Sound - Gaslight Anthem
Strays - Janes Addiction
Gomez - Liquid Skin

Honestly I could have chucked more Ryan Adams in there but eh there are so many things I love, top ten lists are silly like that.

I have not listened to that album in years but from memory the various guitar tones used and production was impressive (although to be expected from Corgan). I had a quick look around youtube and "The Everlasting Gaze" is pretty average for a token heavy track. "I of the Mourning" had that lovely shimmering guitar tone though.

Nier had an amazing soundtrack.
