Shuffle posted:they rob poor people I used to work for a payday loan place, and I can confirm that the underlying goal of these places is purely to take poor peoples money. There wasn't even a veneer of "oh, were trying to help those that need cash to help with an unexpected bill" or something, it was pure "get these rubes into our system, and then bilk them with insane interest fees until they go bankrupt". Not sure of the situation in the states, but here in Canada the government had to legislate these companies to reduce their interest rates because they were criminally high. (Most of our clients were criminally high too )

Every now and then you can catch a commercial for a loan agency based on an Indian reservation called Western Sky or something like that. They advertise the standard payday loans, but if you pause it at the end and read the fine print closely, the APR is something outrageous like 20,000%. They can do this because they're on an Indian reservation and federal loan laws don't apply there.

There are interest limits, but like Captain Trips said, there are companies like Western Skies that are incorporated on Native American land and those laws don't apply to them, so you see hilarious interest rates iirc it's usually around 93-212% interest per day

I forget which comedian it is but they have this great bit about pirates. They were obviously some of the worst people on the planet rapists/murderers/slave owners etc and we portray them as lovable rogues and have our kids dress up as them. Do you think in 40 years our kids will dress up as suicide bombers (and no not ironic hipster college kids or prince harry).

They were obviously some of the worst people on the planet rapists/murderers/slave owners etc and we portray them as lovable rogues and have our kids dress up as them. Did they own slaves, like ever? I've understood that it's far more likely that a pirate was essentially a freed slave himself, because the "recruitment procedure" for many sailors looked an awful lot like being kidnapped off a dock somewhere to work on a ship in horrible conditions for next to nothing. So they'd escape to join pirates instead, often during a pirate attack on their ship. Rapists is kind of weird label to put on pirates specifically too, considering the ships they targeted would have hardly ever had women on them anyway. And most of them would have avoided unnecessary cruelty to their prisoners, as they wanted to incentivize surrenders. In addition to risking their own crew and damage to their ship, even if a pirate ship won the battle they'd still be likely to lose their bounty in the process.
