It seems like it'd be easier if you're from Europe to crack F1, then if you were from America to get in a ride. Not to go "Indy homer", pre-split, I'd argue that AAA/USAC/CART kind of served as "Formula 1" of North America in quite a few ways. In my own view? There was a lot of talent on our side of the pond during those years. But very few of it really trickled into Formula 1. Mario seemed to know how to play the game to get a competitive ride, but there's quite a few that were not a fortunate. Mark Donohue would definitely be a "What if?" candidate. Amazing Road Racer, Indy 500 champion, and had a ride with Penske's F1 program. Sadly, he passed 2 years into his F1 career. Penske's F1 program folded within a few years of that, and that was that.
