Well, in so far as gems can be converted directly to gold, the game's always been pay to win in some capacity. I mean, when I get a new character to 80, I could just sink a few thousand dollars into the game and have a character loaded up with legendary weapons, ascended armor, ascended back and amulet, and exotic rings and accessories. It's silly, but it's entirely doable.

Pay to win carries a nasty stigma because of how it has the ability to really water down the competitive side of the experience for many players. Nothing in GW2's cash shop does that. Also, that only applies directly to legendaries. The rest of the ascended gear requires that the player earn it through in game activities. Although, you can buy yourself out of the crafting material time gates.

Tried Rousing Resilience (Warrior Defense trait) in sPvP. Pro 1,000 toughness when you break out of stun for 4 seconds with no cooldown. Say gently caress you to any direct damage dealers. Con Stun and stun breakers have long cooldown so either can't be used often, making it useless most of the time. Also everybody's using condition anyway so you need condition removers. If you're using Hammer then you need to drop either Merciless Hammer or Cleansing Ire, which are both quite good to drop when using Hammer. I don't use Hammer as my main weapon anyway so gently caress Merciless Hammer  Overall it increases your defense against some builds that involve direct damages, and will let you survive longer when you're stunned. But since ANet made it so easy to apply conditions and yet so hard to remove them, it doesn't make any difference against condi builds. Probably slightly more useful than Defy Pain since you can trigger it any time you get stunned.

There's no advantage from buying gold for real money because it doesn't give you access to anything that anyone who plays the game without converting gems for gold has access to.

Even getting earlier access to stuff that others can get to on their own is not pay to win. Pay to win is literally giving the ability for those who pay money to have a very clear advantage over those who don't pay, in the form of something they absolutely cannot get/do/use in any other fashion. Arenanet sells cosmestic things in the gemstore so you can feel pretty or items for lazy people like infinite gathering tools/salvage kit. True pay to win would be if they sold a weapon with a higher tier of stats than Ascended but never allowed anyone to get it outside of the gemstore or they sold a new elite skill or something that did insane amounts of damage and couldn't be unlocked any other way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daxxVviKvgo Actually this pretty much sums it up.

...and when paired with Trooper runes (previously Soldier) this ability removes two conditions from yourself. I am running with Strength runes now but I miss what Trooper gave me. I still have a healing shout build so I get healed on top of the condition removal and stun breaker.

I run a hammer warrior in WvW and between healing sig, adrenal health, quick breathing, trooper runes, and shout healing the amount of damage I can soak up is insane.
