When these sorts of things come up in court, the issue generally winds up hanging on whether there's artistic merit to the nudity/what have you. I'd argue that most mediums, including film/TV, are generally pretty good about that for the most part. They stick in a sex scene, there's something they're trying to say. US film media in particular is so worried about losing income from an R rating that they'll bend over to avoid it if they can.

Anime is just the opposite. The majority of shows these days pander exclusively to Japanese otaku, and they lap this poo poo up. If you flip through any Japanese language anime blog, you'll find they go nuts over dumb hot springs/beach episodes and the like. You watch anime on Niconico, the comments take note every time there's even a single frame of a panty shot. What you won't find is a single voice in opposition.

So the studios actively seek to cram more of this content in, hoping to sell more $80 DVDs, even when it's needless or even detrimental to the story. That makes a lot of series less than they could have been, and further feeds the fanbase while driving off the average consumer who isn't interested in softcore porn of animated middle schoolers.

On a personal level, I don't really give two shits how many naked boobs they toss in, there have been plenty of shows that manage to be decent while also having heavy fanservice. But I do think that the drive to include it on the part of the creators can at times weaken the work as a whole, that they're essentially peddling softcore porn to an audience that's increasingly creepy, and that it's awkward for me to recommend something to a friend if it's fanservice-heavy. It just makes the industry and the fanbase more skeevy as a whole and makes me embarrassed to be associated with it.

At some point it stops being putting something sexual to appeal to a certain audience in an otherwise nonsexual work, and starts just being softcore porn, aiming to be appreciated in ways other than artistically.

I find it amusing in that there are all these shows with explicit fanservice but I can't remember too many instances where character actually have sex. I think the only anime I watched last year where characters actually had sex is White Album 2. Granted though, I'm haven't watched too many of the heavy fanservice shows.

Female characters in anime can never have boyfriends or husbands, because then they can't be the imaginary girlfriends of the nerds watching the show anymore. Those people are really broken.

Does anyone remember how the author of Kannagi was harrassed by fans until she stopped making the manga, because the fans were outraged that Kannagi actually had a boyfriend in the past?

In short Japanese have the same attitude towards sex in media that Americans have towards violence in media. To some extend the inversion is also true.
The reactions of American anime watchers are fairly obvious from this viewpoint. And gnerally range from hilarious to annoying to an outsider.

That was more a rape, not really the same thing. And holy poo poo yea it's more likely that that a female character will get raped in an anime than have consensual sex, now that I think about it. loving anime.

I don't think it's out of line to point out when something is creepy or misogynistic in its portrayal of female characters, especially when it's in a broadcast medium and the driving force of a consumer market. Like it or not, this kind of stuff has not just societal implications but also affects the creative process for those who work to produce animation. Some might want to dismiss this kind of discussion as feminist social justice warrior babble or white-knighting, but that doesn't make the problematic aspects and their effects just disappear.

I think overall people have become more aware of media representation, and there is a reactionary backlash (mostly amongst dudes who have never personally had to think about how their gender or race was being portrayed in popular culture before) against people who are calling for more thought in how subjects are addressed. Despite the stereotypes to the contrary, it's entirely possible to make something that doesn't denigrate people that isn't at the same time a humorless didactic treatise. There are plenty of great films and TV shows that have done so in the past.

If you're referring to the Satsuki/Ragyo scene then I actually enjoyed that scene in ways I can't explain.
...No, not in THAT way.
Just... the idea of mothers using sexuality to control their daughters has stuck with me for some reason.
Then again, there's a good chance I'd enjoy any scene with Blumenkranz playing in the background.

Good post. Personally, I don't care about seeing boobies in my shows. It's the overall representation that matters.
If the boobies are the most interesting part of the character, that's a problem.
I thought Yoko from TTGL was just tits with a gun. Her personality is bland and she just serves to give guys their first kiss before they die. It's not a case of 'oh lawd cover up those monstrous breasts before I faint from shock.' She was just... boring.

In KLK, the girls are pretty much naked but by the time the series is over, you don't really care. They become fun and interesting characters regardless of their clothes. That's all that really matters to me, that artists put more thought into their girls than their cup size.

I was thoroughly creeped out by the scene, but I appreciated the message it may have been trying to convey.

The idea of mothers controlling their daughters' sexuality made a lot of sense to me, having grown up in a religious community. Sex is shameful. Nakedness is sinful, cover yourself up. If you're not a virgin no man will want you. Ragyo's speech echoed these values.

I think the show was demonizing this way of thinking.

I'm not even attracted to girls I loving swear on my life.

Maybe instead of stamping your feet and screaming "NO!" every time people try and talk about anime in the anime forum, you could instead be a loving moderator and moderate the discussion instead of preemptively murdering it? Or I guess we could all go back to posting long, boring lists of shows we're watching that nobody else reads.

I'm just gonna say I appreciate when people point out this poo poo because unlike ADTRW I don't feel the systematic need to watch every episode of every Japanese animated cartoon that's ever been made in the history of the country, so it's helpful in finding stuff to watch. If it means I only watch one or two cartoons in a season, that's probably a good thing. I prefer not being unpleasantly surprised so when someone says "this series has little to no fanservice and no creepy brother/sister poo poo", that's a big factor in my decision making.

"The world is beautiful" had anime original material as the fist episode. But after this it follows the manga pretty closely.
"Nanana" has been steadily improving since episode one.

To change the topic entirely, All the Anime is getting their Kickstarter boots on, for a all-the-marbles-and-fireworks edition of Patema Inverted. By which, I mean they're planning on translating the Official Design Works, all the extras from the Japanese collector's edition and filming a couple more bits and pieces on top of that. Yours for the low price of £40, with a fiver off for the first 300 customers.

The catch: this is going to be an entirely UK and Ireland affair, anyone else will be told to go away due to the joys of licensing.

In regards to One Week Friends: can anyone compare it to the similar story in ef - a tale of memories? It sounds way more contrived. I loved ef, partially for the drama but also because it had some of the best direction/cinematography this side of Utena.

Maybe not every thread needs to be for arguing this topic. Maybe meta-discussion of forum posting habits is one of the most inane subjects, one of the most tiresome to moderate, and isn't really discussion with value. "Gee, lets argue about how people are being sjw warriors for criticizing an anime for veering softcore porn in a thread that doesn't functionally exist anymore in the thread about the current anime season". Like we really need yet another place to whine about such a clearly fundamental and important topic. Some slight upticks and downticks on certain shows, but so far everything I've watched to three episodes has been reasonably consistent with my first impression. Mind you none of the new shows this season gave me a glowing first impression so there wasn't any hype for them to live up to.
