Does Mushishi ever get any kind of arc or ongoing elements going? I watched a few episodes of the first season way back when, and it was really cool but without any ongoing story it didn't hook me that hard and I forget about it eventually.

I think you're kind of weird for not just enjoying each episode for their own thing, but yes, there are some actually really cool bits of continuity. This includes a recurring character that acts as a really good foil for Ginko, episodes that involve a greater society of mushi masters, and character pasts. It's also cool how you grow to expect mushi or Ginko to act in a certain way and the show plays with your expectations.

You can (and should) buy Spice & Wolf! Yen Press has been doing a decent job, as far as I can tell. I think a new volume just came out a week or so ago. I think all told you could make about 3 more anime seasons out of the books they've translated so far.

Yeah, there are tons of connections between episodes. But as far as I know there is no big story arc.

Maybe not every thread needs to be for arguing this topic. Maybe meta-discussion of forum posting habits is one of the most inane subjects, one of the most tiresome to moderate, and isn't really discussion with value. "Gee, lets argue about how people are being sjw warriors for criticizing an anime for veering softcore porn in a thread that doesn't functionally exist anymore in the thread about the current anime season". Like we really need yet another place to whine about such a clearly fundamental and important topic. Especially since the response has been almost entirely "uhhh duh" beyond people getting themselves probated.

I kind of expected the "this isn't the place or time" response. I am curious what the correct place and time is, though. The sexism in anime thread? Oh wait, you gassed it immediately. Individual show threads? Not unless you want a probation for "derailing" by talking about stuff that happened in the show you're supposed to be discussing. The season thread which has approximately 5,000 derails per page? Nope, this one specific derail out of the millions is not allowed. 4chan?

So people want to argue with each other. Who cares? What's it hurt? As long as it's off in its own little place where people can ignore it if it offends their sensibilities so much to be called a weird dumb pedo for liking a weird dumb pedo show about a blank everyman who systematically rapes his way through his family tree, what's the problem?

Seriously, though, at one point the (all male) heroes accidentally drink from an enchanted spring that magically causes pregnancy and have to desperately search for the mythical well of abortions before it's too late.

I am weird, but that's just me. When the story wraps up so completely & perfectly in each episode it just leaves me not caring as much about what happens next. Thanks a lot for the response, though, the worldbuilding stuff sounds very cool.

I got around to reading Little Star over the weekend because of Zorak's "read a book" posts. It was really fun, I haven't read an emotional roller coaster that good in ages.

I also enjoyed the fact that I knew nothing about the book going in (I'm a fan of the author's other works so I didn't bother looking up info beforehand) and it turned out to be a really good story about love between young girls and singing when I was getting mad at this season for it's mediocre idol and yuri anime.

Yeah I picked that up around the time the simulwatch ended since I wanted to know what happened next. On the note of light novel chat, I also just read Legendary Moonlight Sculptor recently, which was pretty entertaining if you're into The Gamer and Sword Art Online. Has a bit of a rough translation, but it's pretty cool MMO fiction about a dude just trying to be a gold farmer and profiting to finance his sister's college education. As I understand it, it was posted in the QCS Suggestion Box and everyone thought it was a good idea, so some mod changed the hover text. I don't know if it's Zorak approved, but considering all references to Anime Death Tentacle Rape Whorehouse has been removed from the ADTRWiki, I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

And on that note, apparently Devil Is A Part Timer was ADTRW's pick of last year. :wtc:

Those rankings aren't really good for determining "ADTRW thought it was best" because they're not weighted at all. It's "this many people ranked it in their top five shows of the year". It's good as a measure of popularity but not for relative opinions on quality.

Hataraku started strong, but you could tell it was stretching itself thin over thirteen episodes. The second half wasn't as good as the first, and I have no doubt that a sequel would be even worse. Let it stand alone as a good series.

Mercrom

The first two episodes were fun, before the harem elements and the generic fantasy backstory and the incredibly dumb drama. Stuff like "you killed my father I'm so tsundere" would have been hilarious if it wasn't played so earnestly.

We should try to incorporate some weighting. It might be enough to mark one of the 5 selected animes as best anime of the year. Then those animes marked as best get counted in a separate additional category.

Namtab
Feb 22, 2010

The way it's done is less about being the "best" than it is about being the "most popular", which is kinda more appropriate for entertainment imo.

If nothing else I'll probably do a weighted "worst five" at the end of the year.

HellCopter

Yeah, even if it's not at #1 on anybody's list, the fact that a bunch of people put it in their top 5's means that it's popular regardless of personal tastes.

So I'm the guy who curates those lists, and I just kind of made them on a whim two years ago and it was a personal call to weight shows evenly and to cut off the list at top 10.

I chose to weight shows evenly because the recurring rules of the voting threads specify that ranking is optional--and that by introducing weighting, you make strategic voting more appealing. That is, making the ranks and shows you vote for not truly reminiscent of your preferences so that the overall result more closely mirrors your preferences. With an even weighting, the only strategic voting potential is in picking a show or not. And if I came into the thread to say "Hey just fyi if you rank shows I'm gonna weight them by [insert weighting formula here]" then that kind of undermines the whole thread rules.

I picked 10 as a cutoff because it was pretty consistently the point where there was a huge cluster of shows of middling popularity.

Anyway, darkgray is the one who runs those threads, I'll make a list out of whatever system he wants to use.

Why would anyone use strategic voting when it comes to listing their five favourite anims? It just seems like a grossly nerdy thing to do.

I'm not insulting your justification because I have absolutely no doubts that people do do it, I just don't see the appeal.

It's not like that many people are really every single individual list that people are post, so really the main reason you post a list at all is in order to influence the overall "Top List". So if that's your motivation going into it, I can see why you'd do strategic voting. Maybe there's a show that's only the #4 show for you, after Jojo, Mushishi, and Ping-Pong, but you know that those three shows are definitely going to make the cut anyway. You might think "why even bother voting for those three shows?" So you decide to put your #4 show at #1 to try to get it into the list and expose it to more people.

edit: Or maybe I'm mis-remembering these threads and they do, in fact, have a lot of discussion and people reading each-other's lists. In which case :iiam:

Dr. Video Games 0031

I definitely read the lists in those threads and read the reasons why people voted for what they did. Especially because I only watch a small fraction of the shows released in any given year, so it's good to look at what I missed throughout the year and try out shows that seem appealing.

Even if someone does do it, it should be pretty obvious. Just discard any obviously biased lists. In the worst case where there's one or two that aren't immediately obvious, those 1 or 2 skewed votes aren't going to affect the final result with dozens of other voters putting up their opinions.

So I'm saying I wouldn't mind a weighted list.
