I initially read the first panel as "Tonight you'll see why I've shaved..." and thought Kirschen was making his own Burma-Shave comic.

Oh, yeah. I don't want to derail too hard, if you want the full saga, check the Terrible Webcomics Thread---this is the short version. In February, he missed an update. Then, radio silence. Then, a promise that there would be an update about the update. Then a month goes by. It is assumed that Thunt is Dead. Then Thunt comes back saying he's going to update his blog. And he doesn't, for another month. Obviously this is because he's dead. He ends up posting two incredibly whiny screeds and one incredibly deranged piece of feeeeeeelings art. The first screed ends up only on his internal forums and is mostly about 'ugh these bitches on twitter calling me out for saying I'm fetishizing rape and then getting uppity when I sic my fanbase on them, I didn't really MEAN to be an awful person'. The second one, entitled "I Quit", is up on the front page of the site and is a Randian nightmare of "I'M SAD" and "I DON'T DO THIS COMIC FOR YOU (even though your kickstarter money bought me a goddamn house)" that goes on for like 8000 words and includes the personification of guilt in the form of Darth Vader riding a mythological laserbeast.

Besides the :qq:poor white people:qq: aspect that everyone has already mocked, I do not have a gently caress you gif big enough for Branco (and others) repeatedly complaining about free speech zones suppressing conservative white men.

You know, free speech zones, the tactic used since the 90s to suppress protesters who range from anarchist to mildly liberal? The same protesters Branco caricatures with so much hate you can just hear him spitting all over the place like an angry daffy duck? I guess their true purpose was to suppress the comparatively tiny number of conservative protesters all along.

Okay, here's the gallery MacKay linked of a bunch of his cartoons from the last two decades of Ontario provincial elections. Let's start from the beginning, 1995.

1
That's former Premier Bob Rae. He was the first (and so far only) Ontario premier from the New Democratic Party, our resident social democrats up north even though they're so far running a right-wing populist campaign in the current election. Rae was premier from 1990-1995, and his time was marked by economic disaster that really wasn't his fault, but which he took the fall for anyway. He was unable to implement a number of his proposed policies as a result of economic meltdown, and tried very hard to appease business interests with a lot of policies he did enact, which was a mistake because they hated him anyway and did their utmost to destroy his government--and they succeeded. To this day, Rae's legacy is seen by most Ontarians as nearly destroying the province's economy with tax-and-spend socialist policies, and there is an entire generation of Canadians, now between their 40s and 60s, who will pretty much never even consider voting for the NDP because they remain traumatized by the thought that a new NDP premier would destroy the province.

2
Rae's successor was Premier Mike Harris of the Progressive Conservative party, who ran the province from 1995-2002. He inherited a PC party that had run Ontario for over 40 consecutive years from the 40s to the 80s (not even kidding--they won thirteen elections in a row from 1943 to 1985). They were called the Progressive Conservatives because they weren't actually opposed to government spending as long as it created economic growth, and were essentially a centrist party which did a lot of good things for the province. Bill Davis, pictured in this cartoon, was premier from 1971 to 1985 and was beloved by the province for being a really good, progressive guy. Of course, that all changed in the 80s. The party took a small turn towards neoliberalism, lost two elections in a row and spent ten years out of power, and that was all it took for the neoliberals to completely take over the party. Mike Harris won in 1995 on a platform called the 'Common Sense Revolution' which you're all familiar with by now: cut taxes, cut spending, privatize, slash the size of government. He won two majority government on that platform because people were so traumatized by Bob Rae's time in office, but by the end of his time as premier Harris was extremely unpopular because of his open clashes with government workers like teachers, and the negative effects of his cuts including seven people who died in the Walkerton Tragedy because of contaminated drinking water which could have been caught or stopped without drastic cuts to water regulation and enforcement, and the privatization of water testing.

3
Harris resigned before he could be defeated in an election, and was replaced by Ernie Eves, pictured here. His attempts to emulate Harris in privatizing Hydro One, a state supplier of electricity, were foiled by the courts, which is what this cartoon is about.

4
The PCs under Eves lost the 2003 election to Dalton McGuinty's Liberal Party, which is still in power today although McGuinty himself is gone. At the beginning of his tenure, McGuinty was renowned for being wooden and pretty uncharismatic, while Eves was renowned for being a slick politician whose hair matched his demeanour.

5
Eves had actually left politics in 2001 for a high-paying job on Bay Street (Canadian Wall Street) but returned when Harris resigned, to run for premier and leader of the PCs, and win. Rumours had it he was a flop on Bay Street anyway. As it turned out, he could only handle a little over a year in opposition before resigning, and did eventually end up back in the banking sector, so MacKay's prediction came true.

6
Dalton McGuinty, for all his flaws, was really good at winning elections by promising things people actually wanted. In 2007 one of those things was another public holiday in February, to bring Ontario level with most provinces in number of statutory holiday long weekends.

7
2007 saw Dalton McGuinty win a second straight majority government, the first time the Liberals had done that since 1937 (see '44 years of consecutive Conservative governments, above). However, many saw it as more of the PCs, under John Tory, throwing away their chance. The election was dominated by Tory's promise to expand funding to faith-based schools, which most Ontarians hated the idea of, and Tory himself ended up backpedaling on it by the end, but it wasn't enough and Tory even managed to lose his own seat in the election, the ultimate sign of a leader loving up royally.

8
So Tory was history (though now he's running to replace Rob Ford in the Toronto mayoral election) and ended up being replaced by Tim Hudak, an insane right-wing nutjob who's the closest Canada gets to the Tea Party. In the 2011 election, one thing he brought up was that the price of alcohol had increased under McGuinty--you used to be able to get the cheapest beer in Ontario for $24 for 24 bottles, the legendary 'buck-a-beer' which is now history. McGuinty by this time had acquired the nickname 'Premier Dad' for always knowing what was best for Ontarians (supposedly), and steadfastly refused to even contemplate lowering the minimum price of beer again. This was not a big issue in the election.

9
The 2011 leaders' debate (yeah, we only had one, and our elections are only 6 weeks long) was really boring. The most interesting thing about it was that Dalton McGuinty's hands and body language went crazy and he looked like he was trying to explain wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff every time he got a chance to speak.

10
McGuinty won the 2011 election but formed a minority government, one seat short of a majority. And that pretty much brings us up to date with electioneering. I imagine MacKay will be back next week to give us lots of cartoons about the present election.
