psydude posted:I wonder if it would make more sense to fold the VA healthcare into the existing ACA/medicaid programs that seem to have a better (but far from perfect) track record and a wider geographic coverage area. The massive disability evaluation apparatus would probably be a big hurdle. Also, Tricare et al typically pay worse than Medicare, and thus many practices avoid or limit the amount of patients they take, similar to Medicaid. Besides that, would you want a bunch of unkempt vets in your hospital with the accompanying stench of booze, cigarettes, and self-loathing? Edit: there's some 4g... DoktorLoken posted:The difference there is the VA is an entirely government owned and run healthcare provider while Medicare/ACA stuff deal with the insurance side of the deal. I'm all for universal government run health insurance while keeping the providers, hospitals, clinics, whatever as private entities. This may be outside the scope of this thread, but I don't really agree with that; I can afford my own health insurance, and I don't see why other people should have pay for it for me. Maybe for people who can't afford it, sure. Although it's probably a better idea not to have the insurance be government-run, but rather to just give people vouchers to get their own in that case.

Because the free market sure has taken care of everyone! Government interference has only been a disaster. I mean, without the PPACA, my step father would still have no insurance because of a pre-existing condition and likely dead now because his pancreas that he had removed the moment his insurance kicked in would have killed him.

I don't blame government for that poo poo. I blame Neoliberalism. You can turn piles of money into government corruption and government failure by playing the long game and funding the appropriate university departments, creating neoliberal think tanks, pushing neoliberal policy, etc. A number of politically active would-be-oligarchs started pushing that poo poo hard back in the 70s and stayed with it ever since. I mean, this didn't happen all on its own: (This kills the middle class) BTW, the Three Ds of Neoliberal Economic Doctrine are:
All that poo poo's part of the same thing: (economic) Neoliberalism (not to be confused with Neoliberalism from International Relations). It pretty much cuts a straight path for the US to post-soviet Russia-like conditions. I am 100% certain that the US will be more than half-way there by the time I die.

posting about some old-school spycraft but still valid. Saw this book at a used book store today. Decryptions of Soviet spy ring cryptographs commonly known as Venona have been released to the public for a while now. If you don't understand any of this, go back to school. The book's http link to the NSA is outdated, but here's a updated link. http://www.nsa.gov/public_info/_includes/venona_menu.shtml also: i love these cryptographic series republications. it's sad that aegean park press dropped off the internet.

friend of the family DEATH TURBO posted:so what's the ~free market~ solution to everything leaving it to free market manages to be worse. To truly fix it you have to start with banning lobby groups and campaign donations connected to medical companies. Then you have to strictly regulate both medical care costs and insurance. Which is a pipe dream given the current state we are in.
