If you're going with someone from the legendary "gently caress it, people really like the UNC team that just won a title, right?" draft I feel like it needs to be Sean May.

Hahaha do you guys remember that time Sean May was a lottery pick? Oh man. That was so much fun.

I feel like Big Al's one good season qualifies him as the best Bobcat of all time. Second place would be Michael Jordan when he schools rookies in practice.

Am I allowed to be upset at Utah for drafting Deron Williams over Chris Paul that year or is that just being greedy in a draft where Marvin Williams went 2nd?

Someone had to spend a solid like 10 minutes talking me putting actual money on Marco Bellinelli being rookie of the year after one crazy summer league game. Which is funny enough on it's own, but then remember that he got drafted the same year as Kevin Durant.

You can't be upset because eventually Utah acquired Marvin Williams who the Hawks ruthlessly snatched from them in the draft all those years prior.

I think Deron over Paul is a Hakeem-Jordan situation where you passed one elite player to get a slightly less but still elite player, so there's not really much to complain about, but that's just me.

Edit: Admittedly, Deron is no Hakeem, but you still hit really, really good on that pick.

Nothing is ever going to beat the Hawks' promise to draft Sheldon Williams 5th overall leaking a week or two ahead of the 2006 draft and getting widely criticized by everyone, and then they ahead and did it anyway. He ended up averaging 5/5 for the Hawks that season, arguably his best season, while Brandon Roy was selected immediately after him and won Rookie of the Year. On a related note, I had no idea Sheldon Williams stuck around the NBA for nine years. Nor did I know that in 2002 he and Matt Kemp allegedly raped a girl :stare:

BIZORT
Jan 24, 2003

Shelden Williams stunk but he was decent as a specialist and that's how he stuck around as long as he did.

The Clippers promised to pick Yaroslav Korolev a week or two before the draft in 2006, to the point that mock drafts had written that selection in pen, and he proceeded to play like 100 minutes in two years before getting cut

Deron was awesome and I love him but he was way worse than Paul aside from the whenever they played head to head. Paul is in the discussion for best point guard of all time.

God bless all those poor Utah fans who spent all that time on the internet trying to argue that Deron was better though.

Yeah, I thought Deron was a bit better than he was, but still great, hence the edit.

I think it'd be clearer in the 'can't be mad' if it were a true Hakeem-Jordan situation and both guys got their teams rings.

It feels like there was a sizable internet contingent that just now gave in on Deron not being the 1b/2nd best PG in the league like, this season. We had people on this forum still arguing for it as recently as last season.

True story: Michael Smith turned to Larry Bird on the team bus while out on a West Coast road trip in 1991, right around the trade deadline and said:

"I was talking to my agent and he heard a deal on his speaker phone. Milwaukee sent Ricky Pierce to Seattle for Dale Ellis."

"I can't believe that," said Bird.

"What? The trade?" said Smith. "I can't believe it either."

"No," said Bird. "I can't believe your agent has a speaker phone."

The Bobcats are such a delightfully awful franchise it feels wrong for them to get to claim Zo and all that. They deserve their boring create a team name. Bismack Biyombo is going to look all wrong in teal.

I have to deal with this at work, and I keep constantly thinking New Orleans when the Hornets come up.

"The superfluous, a very necessary thing"
Seth Rosenthal is saying the Knicks could be hosed regarding Carmelo Anthony:
http://www.postingandtoasting.com/2014/6/19/5824642/the-bulls-sure-seem-to-want-carmelo-anthony

quote:

We are going to assume in this post that Melo will opt out of his contract before June 23 to indeed become a UFA because everyone has told us to assume that.

Immediately after Melo opts out, he will, for practical purposes, be neither a Knick nor a free agent. Just some guy floating on the fringes of existence. On July 1, he can sign with the Knicks, head to another team with space, or agree to a sign-and-trade. Between those two dates, the draft will happen, and at least one team could be busy making Melo-minded moves out of the Knicks' reach.

There's a decent chance Melo wants to join the Bulls, in which case my instinct is to read those rumors and say "okay, let's just cut out the middleman and get those picks over to New York in exchange for Melo! Give us Boozer to make the salaries match, give us Taj Gibson because I like hi-- No? Okay, then give us some other little salaries and a bunch more picks and let's do this." And then I remember the Knicks can't do that because an opted-out Melo won't be tradeable on or before draft night.

This perplexed me, so I dug around Larry Coon's CBA FAQ and consulted a smart friend for potential loopholes. In short: no dice. I can only think of one rule-dodging scenario and it's extremely shady. There's surely some tampering/collusion in there, plus a level of complexity and trust you wouldn't expect out of an unnecessary NBA trade. And I can't find any precedent for it.

So, the Knicks will have to wait if they want to trade Melo to the Bulls. Or anyone. And in the meantime, the Bulls (or anyone) can make moves that don't benefit the Knicks but do create enough space to sign Melo outright (Great explanation of those options here. The Rockets are in a somewhat similar position, as far as I can tell). And it's NOT FAIR.
