problematique posted:Unfortunately, yes. That or if your maxed out in steps, no where to go. Couple of points here. As a specialist, you can continue to make OT during your career. But, as a certain point (FS-2, and FS-1) you're most certainly a manager, and you're expected to get the job done. Now that you are a manager, you should have FS-3,4,5s in your section as well as LESs. You should be giving OT opportunities to those individuals unless it absolutely requires your attention. You don't want your 360s to always say that you hog OT and don't properly delegate. Of course the amount of OT needed in a section depends on the post itself (what's going on in the country), staffing, grade structure, etc. TCD fucked around with this message at 13:11 on Jul 28, 2014 |

Most senior level DS guys I know have no issues passing that buck, as it's really not worth it for them. Tyro posted:Yup. And at the rate I have been earning it I probably won't use it all. At least I'm a ways away from hitting the pay cap. Just tag it onto your AL, and plan it way in advance.

Anyone worked at the embassy in Mexico City? More specifically, how is the housing situation/life near/around the embassy?

psydude posted:Anyone worked at the embassy in Mexico City? More specifically, how is the housing situation/life near/around the embassy? From what I understand, there are several different areas of housing - most seem happy that I talked to. The current location is awesome if you want cheap street food. Not so good for crime during the evening from what I've been told. When I was there, I took off jewelry and seldom checked my phone when I was on the street after dark. I also do the same when I'm in other Central American cities and I've never had a problem.

The position I'm looking at would provide me with a housing allowance, so I'd have a bit more flexibility. psydude fucked around with this message at 07:01 on Jul 29, 2014 |

Check how long that contract is with the move to the new Embassy. That may have an impact on housing location.

So when the world goes BOOM and embassy staff gets evacuated or relocated or whatever, what kind of ripple effect does that tend to have in the rest of the Foreign Service? Do dangerous events in one country cause unaffected FSOs in another country to think twice about staying in the FS? Does State look to increase hiring for FSOs in light of the new threats? Or do FSOs in the dangerous areas simply roll with the punches because they knew that's what they signed up for when they took that post in Baghdad or Karachi or Cairo?

DS Agents everywhere shake their heads and mutter "I told you so..." For reals though, I feel like incidents like that do little to convince people to reevaluate their careers. Everyone I knew from Tripoli, for example, came out of the experience even more committed to their work. Every individual will handle these things differently, but generally I feel like the FS is peopled by adaptable folk.

You make that commitment when you sign up, and I think most of us understand that throughout careers. Also, when poo poo hits the fan, normally work is really exciting (all jobs), and it looks good in our EERs. As to the rest, uh, I'm not sure how much will be discussed in an open environment.

If you've been through it in the same place, you get a bit of The Feels when you see it happen to others (the totally not an evac last week from Libya hit me hard), but chances are everyone will go through a drawdown of some degree or another during a career that lasts more than a few tours. so you just suck it up and hope that next time isn't so hard on you/your family.

Aside from whats already been said, I am sure some experiences (or rather, what comes after the evacuation) are significantly traumatic to make some people resign. Or just bad experiences in general, accumulated, will make people want to leave. You might get somewhere lovely, or have a really lovely experience in someplace wonderful, Worldwide Availability depends like that.... but most people want to stay in. (It's real hard to match benefits, for one! )

I read that two people in the June A-100 received low-bid assignments on Flag Day. Oops. Is anyone at liberty to say where they will be posted? And how did they react when the flag for one of their "low" bids was brought out and their name was called? So how likely is it that you'll be assigned to one of your "low" assignments? Or is it most likely to happen if you list Berlin, Paris, Brussels, Rome and London as "high" while everything else is "low?" Congratulations, Mantis! You've gone from clearance limbo to A-100 to Ethiopia-bound in just three months! So exciting!
