hmmm, yes, form does matter more than function.

fortunately my boss is fine with me spending my days admiring the reflection effect on my window decorations instead of cracking open an xterm and accomplishing something worthwhile.

just tried to install gnome 3 on a clean install of debian in a vm

- gnome wants me to remove sysv-init because gnome apparently depends on systemd and they conflict
- fix that and try again
- gnome appears to install correctly but does not start on boot and startx command missing
- turns out gnome doesnt depend on x11 lol wtf
- install that manually and try again
- gnome starts but is in 640x480
- display settings doesnt detect my monitor and wont let me change the res
- install vmware tools and restart
- correct resolution now but display still not detected properly w/e
- try to change the wallpaper
- window flashes up then immediately disappears
- look in syslog, turns out its segfaulted
- google the error

the only reason to install a desktop environment on linux is to have a "ha ha i tried using linux and it sucked lol" story to post in yospos

if you have to do actual work on linux desktop then just install a window manager and pick a terminal you like and get to work

if you want to use linux as a general purpose computer no you don't stop it

that's not the linux way. they prefer to let something approach working condition and then replace it with a broken total rewrite. this is mostly because fixing bugs is boring and nobody wants to do it and they're not getting paid so gently caress that.

this is actually normal behaviour in most distros now, the ethenet devices get named after their location in the system like emX for embedded and pXpY for pci(express) cards in slot X port Y.
