Why is there a phone on Patti's desk? I am very confused.

If you are confused by anything in this show, don't assume and just look to the writers.

The Dave posted:Because 2% of the world magically disappeared and some people would mentally break. So they stop talking and start harassing people, keeping logs of their comings and goings, and chain smoke. I think people would just kill themselves. They've done nothing to suggest why the GR would be appealing. As someone pointed out, it still doesn't make sense why Liv Tyler is there. People just show up at their door.

I was expecting the daughter to pull out Nora's gun and start shooting people in the GR house. Not that kind of show though. Put me down on the list who think Dog Shooter is talking to people we cannot see.

I thought I saw her smirk or something after she broke down that made me think she might be trolling them. Hell, I'd be doing whatever I could to make them talk, it would be a fun little game.

I must have missed when it was explained (or was it ever?) but why is it they don't speak? Is it just about the general pointlessness of everything or is there a more specific thing they're trying to (not) say?

I assume they don't speak because they know it makes them extra insufferable and rattles people more when people scream at them for watching them calmly as they water their lawn, and GR doesn't respond back other than to take another drag off their cigarette. Have you ever screamed and been like furious with someone while they stood there and just stared at you, maybe blinked a few times and then said nothing? That would piss me off even more. Basically they seem to be there just to piss everyone off and not talking helps accomplish that.

I'm liking the show more and more as it goes on after being pretty iffy at first. I do want them to take a small detour to the White House and show a flashback of the President absconding and then watching all hell break loose with the secret service.

The GR seems to me to be a NO gently caress YOU DAD version of the dudes that wandered Europe whipping themselves during the Black Death. Most of their weirdness is self-imposed rejection of life. Don't wear colors, smoke yourself to death, never forget that people are gone. Never let others forget either. The Onion AV club had a really good write-up on the show's exploration of depression and the totemic use of Okay and Not Okay for this episode. Garvey's daughter is Not Okay and she challenges Nora, who should be the Least Okay on getting better. I saw her burglary at Nora's as a relatively hopeful attempt to confirm that Nora really didn't need the gun anymore. When she found it, it confirmed that Nora was both Not Okay and full of poo poo. And that's what lead her to the GR's door. The GR collectively are the embodiment of Not Okay.

I think Jill's logic was faulty - plenty of normal people keep a gun in their home for self defense. Even in their purses! But I'll go along with the "she was hiding the gun in her house so she isn't really okay" as Jill's reasoning. She isn't exactly thinking clearly at this point, I think.

I agree. Even if you don't feel the need to carry that gun still cost money and has value. As for Nora I don't know if anyone is really Okay, but she's getting Better. I think what gives The Holy Wayne his juice is that people who seek him out and drop thousands of dollars for a hug are clearly motivated to move on. The pilgrimage, the weirdness and the money dress up what he's really doing which is giving people permission to feel better.

His daughter when he dropped by with the 6 pack of beer. He's weird for sure but it does seem like he actually exists unless Kevin is going nuts and we're seeing an unreliable narrator. Has he actually been named on screen yet? I just call him dog sniper.

Yeah, enough people have confirmed his existence that it would be really off-putting if they suddenly pulled a 'he was just in your imagination' twist without a really loving good explanation.

The best episodes have been the ones that center on one character. Although I have to say Cairo was pretty good, and I can feel for the Garvey guy to some degree. The final pieces of his life that were holding him in place are pretty quickly giving way now. The big question to me which we may never get an answer is what the hell it is that him and the father see and/or lose time to? edit: Also the minimalist score is awesome.

This show is really good but it's not for everyone, which leads to a lot of unqualified critical backlash from turds who are still likely salty about 'Lost'. As someone who never watched that show, I eagerly look forward to each new episode of 'The Leftovers', a show with the perfect soundtrack to compliment & enhance a gorgeously dismal character drama.

Or else she has the worlds shittiest agent, or its like when Clooney agreed to voice the dog in South Park.

When Kevin was in the cabin with Dog Sniper and Dog Sniper asks Kevin to step outside to speak, Patti says something like "You're about to get some great advice." To me that seemed like she was aware that Kevin was out of his mind, or had a multiple personality thing going on or w/e the gently caress...therefore he'd be getting advice from himself. I don't even know...wtf

Funny you should say that; I was in exactly that situation not so long ago except it was me that was being screamed at and the only option I felt was correct at the time was to sit there like a GR rear end in a top hat not saying anything. My reasoning was that nothing I say right now in the heat of the moment will be the correct answer, and I'll learn more about what is upsetting this person by listening to the rant rather than trying to interrupt it and making it worse. Turns out in this case I was right. Anyway back on topic, this makes sense except for the fact they stay silent even amongst themselves behind closed doors, which must make the day-to-day running of the compound and the making of any plans unnecessarily difficult, not to mention the inflated stationary costs they must incur what with how they use entire pages to write notes of two or three words. I like the show, I can accept that we'll never get the big answers (which I find quite liberating, actually) and I don't mind that all the characters are pieces of poo poo because I find them and the premise really interesting, but for some reason this little detail annoys me and I don't think it should fall under the criteria of "unexplained mystery" like the departure or the voices certain characters appear to be hearing does. Tl;dr: The GR should probably speak to each other when they're alone, or it should have been explicitly addressed by now - eight episodes in - what the reasoning is behind them choosing a life of total muteness. What are the odds that the producers were lying when they said that the answers would never come, in order to be able to tell their story in peace and get to the end while heading off at the pass all the ex-LOST people's criticisms? I mean, if that's what they're doing it obviously hasn't worked (haha of course it didn't haha) unless they're simply trolling us all for shits and giggles. If I were in Damon Lindelof's position and had had years of assholes being assholes at me about a loving TV show, that's probably what I'd do.
