Ennis had this problem when he still wrote longass series, see "I hate St. Patrick's Day" issue of Boys, any war flashback issue in anything, American arc of Hellblazer, Kitchen Irish in Punisher. It is not really a problem in my opinion, because all these stories are good to great, and Preacher was really light on plot anyway.

Salvation is a good story but it was a really weird departure from the ongoing narrative of Preacher. I would really like it a lot more as a standalone story.
