Old Town Road to EGOT

For any of y'all who are Wilco fans, I'd highly encourage you to check out Tweedy's album Sukierae. It's Jeff Tweedy on vocals/drums and his 18-year-old son Spencer (who you might remember from their documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart) on drums. There's 20 songs, so it's a lot of material to absorb. It's honestly better than anything Wilco has done for years, though, and it's really nice to see this father/son duo play together and compliment each other really well.

Plus there's this one song that sounds kinda like something Modest Mouse might have done circa The Moon & Antarctica era.

Their label, Morr Music, has a very consistent sound if you're looking for more stuff like this. I first heard Lali Puna on Not Given Lightly - a collection of Morr artists doing really great covers of Flying Nun and related 80s New Zealand stuff. It kicks off with the Lali Puna track:

Not really; part of the reason why I was surprised was because of how rough and weird the new album is compared to any of his past stuff.

As an experiment we are using a new version of BitTorrent to distribute a new Thom Yorke record.

The new Torrent files have a pay gate to access a bundle of files..

The files can be anything, but in this case is an 'album'.

It’s an experiment to see if the mechanics of the system are something that the general public can get its head around ...

If it works well it could be an effective way of handing some control of internet commerce back to people who are creating the work.

Enabling those people who make either music, video or any other kind of digital content to sell it themselves.

Bypassing the self elected gate-keepers.

If it works anyone can do this exactly as we have done.

The torrent mechanism does not require any server uploading or hosting costs or ‘cloud’ malarkey.

It's a self-contained embeddable shop front...

The network not only carries the traffic, it also hosts the file. The file is in the network.

Oh yes and it's called

Listened to the song streaming on the site, and it's just so mediocre :( Not actively bad or anything, just...there. It's odd how an artist so known in the past for his perfectionism can be releasing things that have such an air of "this'll do".

I like how every time I listen to XM radio the stations just have to let me know that "THIS IS WHERE NEW MUSIC IS, BEFORE YOUR FRIENDS KNOW!!!". I just want to know about new bands, but stroking my ego on my way to work is cool too I guess.

Avi Buffalo - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yZmYKZmDzI - Very chill, mellow rock. My personal favorite off the album so far, but the entire thing is pretty consistently good.

SAILS - recently released a new single titled 'Getting It On With You". It's loving fantastic, but I can't find it online to share with you all.

Equally enjoying the Avi Buffalo album and also the album from The Los Angeles Police Department very twee indie. The album is consistently great.

Los Angeles Police Department - "She Came Through…: http://youtu.be/mDlpMHrlknA

And the hugely long James Yorkston album which has some great highlights but could have 10 songs chopped out IMO.

it's crow time again

I have a boner for medievalist music and Carloman is really good. It's like baroque pop if you took out the baroque and replaced it with medieval folk music instead.

The same guy does The Electric Madrigal Society, which is a lot softer--it's madrigals played on electric guitar, and it's hella peaceful.

I like my TV on the Radio with a little more edge. I was kind of disappointed with how saccharine this new song is, but I'm optimistic for the album. From Tunde Adebimpe:

"We’ve been through a lot of stuff in the past few years that could have stopped the band cold, but I’m glad we got it together and took stock of the unique connection we have between each other because the record is, 1000%, without a doubt, the best thing we’ve ever done."

So I guess if he's that confident about it, I have no reason not to be.

Hey Rosetta! is releasing their new album Second Sight at the end of October. The last two albums were both amazing. The new single Kintsukuroi, which means 'to repair with gold' in Japanese, is good so I have high hopes. http://youtu.be/S23-lI4brnQ

It's also kind of funny because another popular Canadian indie rock band, the Rural Alberta Advantage, just released their third album and its called Mended With Gold. A coincidence or Canadian music conspiracy?

Saw the show last night and it was crazy and amazing and I'm jealous he lives in LA and they get to see him more than once a year. Also met the band in person and they're all great guys, even if the bassist (Magic Jake?) looks like a guy that lost custody of his kids in 1987.

Either way I have never seen so many skinny white kids lose their mind at the same time when he played Alone and Stoned at the end of the show. People were crowd surfing all over the place and the poor security guy didn't know what to do :allears:

Another Canadian band (although they're originally from main) The Barr Brothers is releasing an album next week. It can be streamed on the CBC website for the weekend, although you probably have to be Canadian. http://music.cbc.ca/#/blogs/2014/9/First-Play-the-Barr-Brothers-Sleeping-Operator

It's pretty quiet folk but gets nice and bluesy sometimes. Been described as Americana.

i would definitely check them out then, they were such a nice refreshing surprise for an opener. ive since watched some recordings of their shows (and listened to their album) on youtube and its pretty close to the performance i saw...i think they sound better live - apart from the lovely sound on the youtube vids. the ticket was like $20.

like i said, i thought they put on a way better performance than Tennis...i didnt recognize them by name initially or know their music beforehand but i instantly recognized some of the songs they played during their set and then recalled them having some hype around them last year or so. the guitar player is totally a cross between Lindsay Buckingham and Robin Guthrie.

this dude's uploads capture it all reasonably well...thankfully the guitar is much louder IRL

I was actually kind of embarrassed for Mike Kozelek when I heard about what happened with him and War on Drugs. I guess I just don't get his "joke". I'm sure Kozelek is genuine when he says he doesn't mean any serious harm, but I can't help but feel this is one of those shoulda-never-blown-up-in-the-first-place turned pissing match for the public incidents.

Anyway here's more music:

Wampire just released their new album Bazaar this month through Polyvinyl. Here's Wizard Staff https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYdTTfdRWUE. It's got some cool rear end saxophone in there. Interested to see how the album turns out when I give it a listen. Their previous album from 2013 was a treat to listen to so if you dig this track check out their first piece.

Anyone else stoked for new Foxygen? I have to admit I don't really like their first single How Can You Really, but We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic was one of my favorite albums from last year. Here's another released track from their upcoming album ...And Star Power entitled Cosmic Vibrations https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3yTsz90FvU

Bear In Heaven released this track Autumn https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K32l-6TFpOo in August and it's a great tune. I haven't given their new release Time Is Over One Day Old a listen yet, but if Autumn is anything to go by, I'm pretty stoked to give the rest of the album a go.
