Valt posted:Maybe I'm wrong here but at least in Texas you can certainly find out if the vehicle has been reported stolen. First step in getting a bonded title in TX is to do a title search with the state. Costs $5 or so, and you get the title history of the car. Then you send a registered letter to the last known address of record, so, yeah, you get the name and address of the previous owner(s). (If you get no response, you can register the car is yours with a bonded title, paying a % of the value as the bonding fee. Bonded title becomes a real title in 5 or 7 years, I forget which. Pretty easy, though it's easier still to use one of the title washing companies in Hemmings, who usually just register it in a state that only requires a bill of sale.)

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/scz/cto/4708570855.html I called about the cosmetic issues and got to hear about our old friend "surface rust"! Apparently there's some bubbling on the doors, and some rust under the vinyl on the roof? I'm not entirely sure how bad the roof rust is, he wasn't very clear. Still might go see it Sunday afternoon if the Opel doesn't blow my mind.

Yeah it would be 100% cooler with a stick. And 200% cooler if it were AWD or an XT6. It is still fun as hell to toss around, and I really can't stress how small it is.

HorseLord posted:"More reliable." Because in America if the part isn't available at the corner shop it is considered unobtainable and will never get replaced. People act like a Lucas relay can't be switched out for one from autozone and will try to keep tuning a 50 year old carb with a worn needle and sealing it up with silicon instead of just ordering a rebuild kit from Moss. I think also big American engines are more tolerant to poor tuning. During the summer I see classic American cars come out of hibernation blowing smoke, reeking of over-rich mixtures, idling at 1800+rpm and sounding like half the exhaust valves are burnt; probably making about as much power as the little British 4's but it's enough to haul the kid that paid too much for it around town at 30mph. In a small 4-cylinder roadster that kind of abuse would probably leave you stranded on the roadside. And then of course the chain shop ruins your Girling brake system with regular fluid. For real though I love a simple BMC engine and they can be as reliable as any engine of the era.

I think it's going to depend on your proportions and tolerance to wonky angles. I fit (with no room to spare at all) in one at 6'4" but I had no real commute to speak of, and that was a decade+ ago. I don't think my back would appreciate it as much these days. I'm glad I don't have $8k laying around because otherwise I might tell my back to gently caress off and buy that GT anyway

Not much. I'd keep the original engine if it was at least a 200ci, but google/wiki says this had the 144, and the ad makes no mention of it's size or if original. On another note, I was looking at whingepool the other day, and some guy on that forum had a 200ci XY wagon and was wondering if it's a good deal for a straight swap for some 250,000km AU XR6!

Atomicthumbs, I've actually got a line on a 1973 Volvo from one of my wife's coworkers. Apparently it was given to her a while back and she's driven it a bit to work and such, but she already has a few classics (like a Studebaker) and is thinking of selling it for about $1000. I've asked my wife to get all the details... Hopefully it's not too rusty, and apparently it's driving, so that might be my next old car to gently caress around with.

Huh, I like Opel GTs and am actively looking for a good project one. I've never actually sat in one but everything I've read says that they are pretty good for 6 footers (I'm 6'2"), but maybe that's only relative to a Mini or a shoebox. The example you posted is pretty nice, it's very rare to have the chrome strip on the back, and that A/C is rare as hell (first I've seen it). Did you drive it? There's a '69 parked in the alley no more than 100 yards from my house. It's not for sale but I offered him $800 for it and he said he'd think about it. 1 week later a 50mph straight line wind knocked a tree over on it denting the roof. The dents aren't too bad, BUT YOU SHOULD'VE TAKEN THE MONEY TOOMBS.

Yeah, I had also read that it was decent for tall people... he had some non-stock seats in there, Recaros IIRC, which may have put me up too high. The A/C was not functioning and I could see why, a piece of hose had broken. I did drive it. Seemed pretty ok, although part way through the drive I managed to kill it (figuring out reverse) and it took several tries to start it again. Overall I was pretty impressed, but it just didn't fit me right. Maybe if I'd spent more time dicking with the seat? I don't know. If you're in the area and interested in the car, move quick because he's got someone in Germany interested in buying it.
