A Non-Shadow of Mordor Little Thing. I started playing the Dragon Age: Origins DLC Witch Hunt tonight, and something I noticed while managing equipment made me chuckle. In this DLC, you pick up a party member named Finn, a kinda nerdy mage. Among Finn's armor pieces is a "ghastly hat" whose item description says is a gift from his mother that he hates wearing. It's the only piece of Finn's armor that remains unequipped when he joins the party.

Too often I find myself snoozing through the early difficulty levels of Platinum games (after taking 1-2 stages to learn controls) in order to unlock the properly difficult modes. They perfected the system with GOD HAND, so why haven't we seen it again?

Bayonetta, and soon 2 are great and almost perfect but GOD HAND is still the best.

I picked up Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon at release and only play in small spurts because the game is fun as hell and dripping with character. Luigi reacts to every little detail in a soft and shaky voice that seems to get a little more confident as time goes on but is always a huge baby when a ghost scares him. Solving a puzzle or beating a boss is always a matter of relief for him, not a matter of victory.

They'll never run away, but in predator rooms as you take out guys the ones left will be terrified.

I really loved the sort of "cartoony slap-stick" feel going on and while the game didn't have portrait ghosts, the standard goof balls really grew on me with their antics. Related, the Ghostbusters game for the 360 was much, much better than I thought it'd be. The dialogue is funny and clever, the settings can be genuinely creepy, and they even integrate the player fairly seamlessly into the world. The gameplay was pretty neat too, although they eventually relied a little too much on making it a 3rd-person shooter and not enough on actually capturing ghosts. Also, that game made me hate Peter Venkman. I GOT KNOCKED OUT PETER, GET OVER HERE AND REVIVE ME AND STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT BEING SLIMED.

F3AR has a pretty cool multiplayer mode where you play as, to quote an average man, Point Man or his imaginary friend. But yeah, the best part about the terraria free updates is that each one is as big as, or even bigger, than the previous one. The next update's set to add almost a dozen new enemy types, a new survival wave, a moon boss, thousands of items, new biome types and mini-biomes, all sorts of fun stuff.

When I was a kid, one of the first games I got for my GBA was Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, and drat did I get hooked. Being a kid I pretty much cheesed the whole game. I still remember sitting in the entrance to the double-headed dragon's boss room and throwing axes until it died. Just because of that I think I never switched my subweapon for the rest of the game. That really started a lifelong love of the Castlevania games, and Portrait of Ruin remains one of my favorite games ever. Anyways, I recently picked up Symphony of the Night for a few dollars (I never had any playstation systems until two years ago) and dammit I get why people love this game. Just beat it and it ruled. Anyways my favorite little thing is the bat familiar you get. In the game you can shapeshift (after finding items) into a wolf, a bat, and mist. If you have the bat familiar and shape shift into a bat yourself, your little buddy comes flying over and a heart appears above his head. When you turn back into Alucard, he makes a little squeak and a question mark appears. It actually made me feel a bit bad. Poor little guy. I read that if you level the bat familiar up enough, more bats will appear when you transform. Do they all get the hearts and question marks too? I also loved that if a room is too tedious, you can turn into mist and nothing can touch you, so you just get to waft over all these confused monsters attacking nothing.

In Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, one of Fragtrap's ultimate abilities is the "HI FIVE GUYS" power, which causes him to hold up his hand and wait for someone to hi-five him, and gives them and himself a buff if they do. If no one does it, or you're alone, he will get dejected and get a different buff. The little thing that they don't tell you and that's great is that even if you're by yourself, you can still trigger the first kind of buff if you time it right, because Fragtrap will count most enemy melee attacks as close enough to a high-five for it to count.

There are a lot of little things in SOTN. I enjoyed how the inverted castle's Library has twisted versions of Wizard of Oz characters as enemies. The Lion has a suit of armor and a giant claw weapon, but is still cowardly and constantly backs away from you, only attacking occasionally. The Scarecrow is literally a mindless scarecrow impaled on a wooden rod that bounces around trying to kill it comes across in search of brains. The Tinman is just a heartless automaton - a small machine on wheels with spinning axes instead of arms.

I loved the wizard of oz stuff, I caught on right away. The fairy on your shoulder actually wasn't my favorite; I liked that she sat down but whenever you move after she sits down she gives a gasp that wouldn't be out of place in a porno and really awkwardly shows her tiny fairy panties. It skeeved me out. I love the sword though, especially that it calls out its attacks.

In Harmony of Dissonance there was another great take on this - the translation really hit home that Dracula is definitely just supernatural Vlad the Impaler (all of Dracula's body parts you collect are named Vlad's ___), so the Scarecrows that you find in the castle in HoD attack the same way, but are bloodied corpses stuck on spears.

Every so often I pick up a classic game that I somehow missed, just to expand things a bit. It doesn't always work out--old PC RPGs tend not to fare well--but other times, it does great. Mega Man X was something I'd never played until today, and its wall-jumping is so well done that it has retroactively made every other game I've played with wall jumping worse in comparison.
