I have actual skeletons in my closet
I enjoyed rap music more than RTJ but all three albums are similar. They are too dark and rappidy rap. Killer Mike is technically impressive but his delivery grates on me. I can't unhear his ratatata ratatata flow from that first outkast song he did with the african singing. But I like to read his lyrics. El-P is cool, a favorite of mine, but I can only take a few songs from him until I'm completely numb. His production is overwhelming and not in an entertaining way. I've listened to both RTJ albums multiple times and I was disappointed by both. They never live up the hype and never seem to be better than anything else out there. Flatbush Zombies, Odd Future, even Kanye is doing everything RTJ does. RTJ had good branding and good will with the right internet people to make it buzz. But I can't think of anything on those albums that is noteworthy other than it being real hiphop for people that are too cool for real hiphop. If El-P used break beats, they would probably hate it.

I really like RTJ but I do agree with you on that, temple: it is a bit intense to listen to. If I listen to the whole album I need to take a break from it for a while and listen to something more chill.

Pretty much all of those things are stuff I like in hip-hop. It sounds more like RTJ doesn't suit your tastes than like it's overhyped.

Also lol, Odd Future. And Flatbush Zombies are fun but I don't really hear the similarities.

Do you see this? This means "Have a nice day".
El-P has been solid for years. Look up Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein from years ago, which El-P produced. It's amazing.

It can be both not my taste and overhyped. Can we just cut to the chase and have a katana duel over this album?

Odd and Flatbush make dark, angry rap to much better effect than Killer Mike's fat mouth trying to say tongue twisters or El-P describing intense alien violence and dick jokes.

That would be more fitting for an argument about Wu-Tang.

It's overhyped on the internet for sure. It's one of those albums that the really vocal internet music nerds love. It's a blog album. Whether it's intended to be an album that reddits hip hop section or not(almost certainly not) it really resonates with them for whatever reason (which is hilarious). It's angry, anti-establishment, "funny", weird, well-produced, in your face, which is everything internet weirdos love and aspire to be but aren't.

I have solved the album and the internet, Thank you god bless

All valid criticisms but Killer Mike still delivers my favorite political verses. Lie, Cheat, Steal is great. It's kinda weird that El-P's contributions dont really seem to align on that subject matter at all though...

And i really agree with the production being too grating across the whole albums (though RTJ2 corrects this or tries to at least) but even sometimes within a singular song... Like Especially on that zach de la rocha song good god that vocal sample did not deserve to be the foundation for an entire beat

They're not "overhyped" when most dudes actually really enjoy their music. "I do not like popular thing" =/ overhyped. Overhyped implies that the publicity and ephemera around it are far greater than the actual music, whereas the actual music here is actually extremely good.

El-P as a producer stacks up (qualitywise, obv not saleswise) against anyone in the history of rap. Like most good producers have a particular sound that they start, and then wear out because they can't change, or try to change but their efforts fall flat outside whatever style they are known for initially. El-P's a dude who's been able to make amazingly produced albums over a long period of time, while keeping a signature sound and updating it so it's never stale. Like I can't think of but maybe 10 dudes I'd put up with him as a producer (and even that number may be generous).

I also just don't think of RTJ as dark or angry. The first album is as much fun as I've ever had listening to a rap album. R.A.P. Music is a lot angrier but when I think of "dark" hip-hop I think of like Billy Woods.

edit: anyway he has come a long way since then (2001) at least but yeah he will occasionally fallback on that same flow

I get what you're saying. El-P tends to come in two flavors: schizophrenic and dystopian (or both). I definitely have to be in the right mood to listen to him or it just isn't particularly enjoyable.

This is real true. The Cold Vein is a great album, I still remember some dipshit in this thread telling me he thought Exquire's rapping over those beats was better than the Cannibal Ox stuff, and I wanted to kick dude in the forehead.
