Windows 7 and 8 allowed you to move windows across monitors by just continuing to use the aero snap keyboard shortcuts in the direction of the adjacent monitor. This stopped being the case in the 10 preview, where continuing to hit the shortcut does...nothing I think.

Back in 9860 allegedly.

On the other hand 9860 is only available as a Build Update, which is install image-sized. At least you can dig it out of SoftwareDistribution if you're testing it more than one place, but I don't even know how you'd make it a bootable preinstall.

I couldn't get the new build to install. Apparently adding any new hard drives messes it up. Because reasons. So every time there's a build, I'll have to unplug everything.

RS232 is still used a lot in engineering. In my ECE courses, we'd read pin signals directly.

Is anyone else having trouble getting Win + arrow keys to work? I updated to the latest tech preview and it doesn't do anything anymore. Ctrl + Win + arrow keys works to change desktops. But keyboard shortcuts for snap doesn't work.

Did you have them attached when you installed Windows 10? I unplugged all of my internal drives to prevent Windows from picking a random drive to place its bootloader (or prevent it from overwriting GRUB). So they weren't there when the tech preview was installed. The update kept failing until I removed them. So word to the wise, you can't add new drives to Windows 10 if you want to get updates.

Maybe you could stop sperging so hard for a second and realize that shortcut already existed in previous versions of Windows but wasn't included in the first tech preview. So yes, he couldn't believe that a shortcut that was useful in Windows 7 and 8 wasn't included in 10.

This is my point. The shortcuts weren't "[not] included in 10", they weren't included in this early preview build. Missing/moved/restricted/in-progress functionality is the norm for this kind of thing, not the exception. Being so taken aback that something is temporarily missing that you go and post about how it surprised you shows ignorance of the norms, which is why I said the preview version probably isn't for him.

Maybe you are overreacting to someone being mildly confused/amused as to why those particular keybinds would be turned off when it's not like they're coding the entire operating system from scratch or the feature those keys bind to isn't fully functional otherwise.

Someone posting 'Yeah, it's weird that this pre-existing keyboard shortcut for a still-existing feature was specifically disabled for no apparent reason until now' isn't even close to people posting all over the internet that Microsoft is keylogging every password ever. It doesn't even imply they're actively using the build, as all it requires is having two screens and some basic testing of the kind that an alpha build is for. I noticed it on the first boot while exploring the new features because that's how much I use that shortcut just with Windows Explorer.

Like I'm not disagreeing with anything they're saying, I just think they've put a disproportionate amount of effort into berating someone over how maybe alpha testing isn't for them if they're going to go on a forum and agree with other people's posts about a feature .

I think the point he's trying to make is that it (being things like the missing keyboard shortcut) should be expected -- and it shouldn't be surprising. Large tracks of code are being converged/refactored so many things that were existing/working before will be removed/changed/broken until parity can be restored. Windows, Windows Phone, and Xbox are all the same OS now and it takes sometimes takes breakage as it's unified.

I don't think this really applies here but I guess I could also say keep in mind that goal here is to get you builds that didn't a) cause a sample of computers to explode in flames and b) was at least mostly useable even though it may have some missing features/bugs/or random broken keyboard shortcut. You guys are literally getting code that checked in/compiled like a week ago for the express purpose that we want you to use it and tell us early if we're going the wrong way or if we're on track.

I bet if you used the feedback app on the missing shortcut issue there is probably a bug on it already.

Are there any other suggestions for defragging software under Windows 7 than the stock version and defraggler? The latter has turned a drive into a jittery, laggy mess, and I'm not sure whether I used the wrong option, there's too much poo poo packed on the drive, or if they dropped the ball with a recent version.

It's an 875 GB drive, 85% occupied, I think a WD Black from a few years ago. I've been using it as my applications/mostly Steam drive for as long as I've had it.

1) Games can stay on the spinner, but applications go on the SSD. I'm assuming you have an SSD, if you're talking about a WD Black as an offload drive, otherwise what the hell do you have Windows on. If they don't all fit, then you either have too many applications or not enough SSD.

2) Once your applications are on the SSD (seriously what) defragging your platter drive won't much matter. Remember that games are mostly meant for stuff like the Xbox and PS3 - they have to deal with a lot worse than whatever minor fragmentation Administrative Tools or Defraggler thought wasn't worth their time.

3) Yeah, 85% full is pretty bad for anything with something other than games or bulk media on it, even if it's not an SSD.

I've used http://www.mydefrag.com/ before for an old XP system and it worked fine. Bear in mind right on their page they say:
"MyDefrag is extremely solid because it is based on the standard defragmentation API by Microsoft, a system library that is included in Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 2008, and Win7. Most defragmenters are based on this API, including the free defragmenter that comes with Windows and many commercial defragmenters. Basically all MyDefrag does is send "move this file to that location" commands to the API. The API is part of the operating system and can safely move almost any file on the disk, without risk and while the computer is in full use."

If you're noticing issues with your disk it could be having problems, you should definitely check the smart data with Crystal Disk Info to see if you have bad sectors showing up or other indicators of drive failure.

I've started seeing a really odd thing happen since I started this job. Three or four times now I've been copying a folder over to a flash drive, network location, etc. and as soon as it finishes I'm prompted that a folder already exists there with the name of the folder I'm copying. It seems that Windows (Enterprise N environment) tries to re-copy the folder immediately upon finishing. I have no idea why it would be doing this and I've never seen it happen before. What could be causing this?

I've had Windows 8.1 since about April, and this is something that kind of drives me nuts:
Every once in awhile, the desktop background will go black and the taskbar will become unclickable, icons will disappear if you hover over them... I can't figure out why it's happening, I thought it'd be easy to google and see what the problem was, but I haven't really found anything. I usually sign out and sign back in to fix it, but obviously, I'd like to correct the problem. I thought it might have had something to do with going into full screen mode on certain applications, but sometimes I'll just leave the computer running, and when I go back to it, the problem reappears.

Go and double check your graphics card drivers. Uninstall them, reboot, clean poo poo up, and then install them fresh. Check all drivers if you have to. Most of the stuff I've had like that are driver issues.
