Good advice, I hope I can follow it as I have a panel interview Monday with 5 people. VP, CIO, Director, Senior Manager and Manager. I've been trying to memorize names even if i don't have faces to go with them yet although I've considered attempting to stalk them on LinkedIn for faces. Bonus for this interview is I'm not actively looking for a job and really don't need to make a move for any strong reason (aside from a desire for some career advancement).

For me it's the person that would be the manager, someone from the team, and then two "Service Directors," which is the part that scares me a bit. Maybe the "Senior Systems Administrator" position is more senior than I thought.

I would agree but there's technically more than one company involved. One is a Holding Company and the other is the largest of their subsidiaries. I'm hoping the management isn't as excessively layered as the titles would lead one to believe.

This is probably IT 101, but as I'm still kinda a newbie I don't mind asking and possibly making myself look stupid. We had a couple of users - sharing a wall plate with 4 Ethernet ports - report their VoIP phones stopped working, and that they lost network connectivity on their PCs. The PCs were plugged into the phone, but when I plugged them directly into the aforementioned wall plate, they got connectivity back. So the phones are part of the problem. I then plugged the phones into ports in a different room - and they start working. So I start to suspect that the switch lost PoE. I went into another room that was using ports coming from the same switch - but the phone was working fine. So - can individual ports lose PoE but not Ethernet? Or is it probably a wiring issue more with the wall plate itself? We don't have any sort of voltmeter here to test, but it seems likely... Basically I've gone as far as I can go with the issue, and reported all of the above to the proper people, but now I'm just curious. I guess I'll find out tomorrow regardless.

It sounds like hosed wiring. The PCs connected directly may have worked fine because they negotiated at 100Mbps and only used two pairs.

Group interviews aren't bad. Usually only one or two people will be asking questions or actively engaging you, and the rest are just there to evaluate your personality and offer opinions after you leave, so it's not like you're defending a thesis or arguing in front of the Supreme Court, with questions coming rapid fire from all sides. I prefer them to one on one interviews because the mix of personalities and skill sets usually leads to better discussions that allow more opportunities to show your personality and expound on your technical skills and working style.

That's the other possibility - you might have gone over budget for power on the switch and these phones happened to be patched into a port that is turned off first.

Continuing the resignation story: my boss lady (the same one who said I wouldn't be good enough for my next job) just begged me to stay on a month longer as my legal notice would be. I said I'd think about it, but I'm really not planning to stay that long. I just don't like her going all emo on me, it makes me feel like I really am a mercenary. She also tried to bump up the notice to 4.5 months, saying it was the legal one. It isn't. It's "only" 3 months. Maybe I should be posting in things that piss you off.

No signal. Plugged them into another switch, and they started working fine. So I just moved the cables that the wall plate was using to the other switch and all's well now. Put a ticket into networking letting them know; I don't know if they'll even want to do anything now that it's working and now that we know why it happened. Apparently no one here knew that you can only plug so many IP phones into a switch. TMYK! Edit: In retrospect I have no idea why I didn't initially post this in the ticket thread.

Ok, looks like the guy who was explaining on-call pay to me was slightly incorrect. There IS a base-pay just for being on-call. Like most, it's a small amount, but better than nothing. Every "shift"' of on-call work (there are 16 shifts of it per week,) is worth 1/2 of my hourly rate (per shift, not per hour of the shift.) If I have any page that is "actionable" (i.e., I have to actually do something) then any work I do is at twice my hourly rate, min. 1 hour. So from now on, I'll do what the old guy was telling me and if I can get away with it, every page will get a ticket created so I can say it was "actionable."

Got a buzy Friday with two job interviews (the technical ones), which will transform into two cool job offerings. Now to give my resignation and have it accepted before ten days (or I'll have to stay at my job 4 more months instead of 3 ). Yay for France labour laws. But anyways time to celebrate  .

The director of IT for my college, who is my boss/my boss' boss, thinks that the E in FTE means Employee, so he says stupid things like "Psuedo FTE" to mean "a number of employees working part time that add up to a full time employee."
