The lightsaber looks kind of silly now but I'm sure that sith is gonna kill someone with one of the little crossguard blades and I'll change my mind once that happens and wonder why nobody made one sooner. Or maybe they'll be a really flashy, ostentatious person who'd have a dumb fancy laser sword. It's all about context.

The trailer looked fine, even great at times, but it looked like something you could have seen in any well-crafted space adventure film, and not necessarily a Star Wars movie.

I will say it looks better than any of J.J. Abrams' released films so far. It has me intrigued, though I really can't make any true judgements until a year from now.

EDIT: Maybe another way to put it would be that having a Star Wars movie where I have little context on what it is going to be about is just a little off-putting.

I was 10 when I first saw this trailer and I was probably as freaked the gently caress out. Later that year my grandfather took me to see Star Wars at Grauman's Chinese Theater and yeah it was a loving great movie to see at that age.

They've got quite a while before they start dropping merch. Probably just a placeholder. Disney being Disney they probably want to keep the official look close to the heart so they can't be sniped by all the counterfeit that's likely to take place.

The only thing more silly than that lightsaber in the trailer is the notion that in a universe as large and fleshed out as Star Wars, that all lightsabers should look the same. It's as silly as saying all swords or guns should have the same design. I will never understand these dumb complaints. You do understand that this is a franchise where there's a weapon that destroys entire planets, right? Silly, fun weapons are kind of a given in fantasy/sci-fi

Sure. These are just my personal disappointments with the trailer, and if you liked it, cool.

Visually, it looks right out of JJ's Trek reboot. The colors and the saturation, especially on what I'm presuming is Tatooine, the X-Wings over water and the Storm Trooper transport.

The Falcon looked really, really CG. (I know it's unfair to judge from these early trailers, but don't show me poo poo that isn't ready to be looked at, especially if it's an iconic piece of your films). Also, the spinning camera in that sequence is just really not my thing. It worked in JJ's Trek reboot, showing the planets and ships from other directions than "up is up" - but in Star Wars, where there's a very distinct visual palatte (like someone said, the prequels may have sucked, but they "looked" like Star Wars) with the way the camera is treated.

The lighting and shakycam in that Trooper transport took me right out of it. Also, the jarring smash cuts in the trailer with the blackness interspersed... It did not "feel like Star Wars" to me.

The Storm Trooper popping into frame in the opening shot (ala "Look sir, Droids") from the original was neat, though. Though the Storm Troopers on Tatooine were so dirty... This universe doesn't feel very used - and the faux-weathering on the X-Wing pilots helmet looks kind of silly.

Or someone will figure out all you have to do to win a lightsaber fight is slide the blade down to the hilt and chop off the other user's fingers when they clash, and that dude is going to be like "nuh uh!" and the badass hilt lasers come out.

Nothing wrong with the concept of a lightsaber having a crossguard, but I couldn't help but immediately think that this particular way of doing it wouldn't work. The opposing blade would just hit the metal part of the guard and cut through it.

I am actually hoping that the old cast only gets a few token scenes and the movie is actually about new characters, because the problem with every IP ever is that there's alwas a small group of characters that the universe ends up revolving around.

Star Wars is bigger than Luke or Vader or Han, they had their adventures and it's time for new characters to have theirs IMO.

Sweaty black trooper jumping into frame was pretty confusing and looked like it was from a fan film. Something about the lightning, I don't know. Rest of it looked great. I love the idea of Star Wars ships in atmospheric battles onscreen instead of just in the video games. New saber looked awesome with its effects and ugly blade.

Tiny thing that I love is that you can see the blade glow on the mists rolling by and especially on the bad guy's hands. It makes it look much less after-effect-y and fake and I love it. Lightsabers are rad as gently caress and the new X-Wings with the split half-wings are rad as gently caress and oh man I didn't think I'd get to be excited about a Star Wars movie again after I saw III in college.

Caros posted:

The funny thing is that this is actually more useful. The cross hilt is pointless because any blow that you attempt to catch on it will just roll down into the point where the two blades meet, slice through it, and go cloud city on your hands.
Yeah this, I don't see how they're supposed to work as an actual crossguard since anybody could still just cut through the part where they meet the hilt. So either they'll address that or the mini-blades are gonna be used as a stealth weapon and not a crossguard. Or they're just exhaust from a totally :black101: janky old-school saber like some people have suggested.

I'm old and cynical. I didn't like the prequels and this doesn't do it for me. It doesn't mean the movie is going to be bad, but that wasn't a great teaser for ME.

An 88-second double sunset on Tatooine would have been better.

I'm going to see it either way, but JJ's style is divisive, and I just don't like it for Star Wars. It looks too clean and sterile (like the prequels). It worked in the Trek reboot, it doesn't work for me here.

Actually this is smart.

The more they market it as "Episode" whatever, the more people associate it with "the poo poo ones".

The OT films only had their episode numbers in the opening crawl, and they never used them in marketing.

It was much better than Into Darkness, for sure. The problem is it stripped away everything that makes Star Trek good, and what it is really about. It was basically a generic Sci-Fi action movie. poo poo, it was JJ basically making Star Wars under a different name.

To be fair, most of the latter Trek movies, particularly the TNG films, were lovely action sci-fi crap themselves, but they also made the same mistake of missing the entire point of what is great about Star Trek. I was hoping with the reboot we could get Star Trek back towards the identity that made it great in the first place... but no we got JJ making Star Wars under a different banner. Now he gets to make Star Wars for real and it is basically gonna be the same poo poo.

Anyway, the X-Wing scene did look pretty great. Again I don't think the film is going to be complete poo poo or anything. It will for sure be a fun ride. Just a ride I might only ever need to take a single time in my life, and proceed to forget about soon after. I don't need a sci-fi film to change my life or anything stupid and unrealistic like that, but I do like a bit more than a rollercoaster ride I guess.
