The first one doesn't have a DS remake. Instead it has a Wonderswan Color remake. I forget if they fixed the chainsaw bug or not. That said, the next in line for remakes, logically, would be Romancing SaGa 2...

Mystics (in SaGa Frontier) seem to be equal parts vampire and fae, which I thought was pretty neat. I also rather liked that the Asellus segment starts out as Runaway Brides of Dracula. By the way, "Fascinaturu" is a weird and dumb name and just makes me think an "Faxanadu".

We've got a pretty big update today so you better strap in. Lots of asses that need to be kicked. Of course first we have to get our update from Gina on what's happening in Chateau Aigulle. Go get White Rose. Use any means necessary. Yes, Lord. Ciato summons three shades that will be trying to take us out. We will make at least two of them look like chumps. Now that we're done in Owmi, the next place we want to go is Shrike. Once you're in Shrike, the world completely opens up. You can wander around and do a bunch of sidequests and pick up new characters if you so choose at this point. Do I know you? It's me Asellus. You didn't recognize me because of my green hair. ... What are you talking about? I'm not dead, see? It's me. Maybe you're a mystic trying to trick me. She's been missing for 12 years. Heeeelp!! Someone help me! I'm not dead see? It's me.. Why didn't you tell me? White Rose... Time means nothing in Facinaturu. I didn't want to shock you. Keep in mind that Illdon said that Asellus woke up relatively quickly. Chateau Aigulle made a pretty big deal about Asellus being there so it's probably the only interesting thing that's happened there in a while. It makes sense why most of the princesses sleep all the time. Chateau Aigulle must be dreadfully dull. You shouldn't talk like that. Leave me alone!! Disobey my Lord? That's quite an accusation. And so, Asellus's inner crisis is interrupted by the Fire Sage. The Fire Sage is very weak. He's supposed to only be fought right after you get to Shrike but if you want you can go get a party of 5 and completely embarrass him. As you might expect he uses various heat and sword attacks. Fortunately this triggers Asellus to spark Deflect. Between attacks with the Asura and Tiger Rampage we can do about 1500 damage around. This is enough to take him out in around 4 turns. If White Rose doesn't have Tiger Rampage just use Phantasm Shot instead. It should only take another round. After we beat the Fire Sage, Asellus gains the first of her mystic weapons. The important thing here is that if you absorb an enemy into them even once it has an effect on which ending you get. Doing so will completely lock you out of the Full Human ending. After the fight White Rose is seriously having second thoughts. This is the first time she's realized that what she was doing counts as actively disobeying Orlouge, and as Mesarthim mentioned, that can have some grave consequences. Don't go, White Rose. You're the only one who understands me. Lady Asellus. For beating up the Fire Sage we get this nice concept art of Asellus. Of course since we're in Shrike we might as well check out the porno mag. It can't be. I'm ashamed of myself. Now while the porno mag is a joke for most characters, it's kind of significant for Asellus. Orlouge's blood is having a profound effect on Asellus. In addition to the immortality, Asellus has been causing females like Gina and White Rose who (as far as we know anyway) wouldn't normally be attracted to women, to feel intense attraction towards her. However, I believe that this might be the first example we've seen of Asellus being attracted to other women. Back when this game came out, gay and lesbian characters (especially main characters) were pretty rare in JRPGs that came out in English. Granted Asellus's situation is kind of unusual because her sexual orientation was changed by a magic blood transfusion, but it's still pretty neat to have a lesbian main character back then. Anyway, now that we're done in Shrike it's time to do some early game errands. Our first stop is Devin to start the arcane quest. We also want to stop over here to talk to the shrine maiden who has some extra dialogue for us. How rude! May I ask your name? The name doesn't matter. We also pick up Rouge in Luminous and head over to Scrap to pick up some other characters. This guy gives us some interesting info about Asellus. We know that Asellus lives with her aunt, but we don't know who her parents are. Since this guy is also from Shrike there is a chance that he could be Asellus's father. We can also talk to Riki and Mei Ling, but this is one of the few scenarios they won't join. Truly a huge loss. Then we pick up Gen and Thunder. This team should be good enough for now. With that out of the way, we head over to the Swamp to transform Thunder into his Trisaur form to help with the upcoming bosses. I also get extremely lucky with Rouge. A quick trip to Koorong and one save and we're ready to go. The Water Sage is the second of the bosses Ciato sends after us. We will see the next one pretty soon. The way these fights work is that they randomly appear in certain locations (like the back streets of Koorong). To get them to appear you must have fought at least one battle since the last one, and once you have triggered a boss fight in that area, it can't be used again as a boss spawn point. The water sage is extremely easy. You should still have leftover water gear from the Lord's Manor sidequest and even without that, everyone on our team aside from Gen can do damage well above what most characters can do at this point in the game. He goes down after 2 combos. After fighting one lovely bird enemy in the back streets we head over to Luminous for our next fight. While most of the boss fight spawn points are in already dangerous areas, some of them are in areas that you wouldn't normally expect and can catch you by surprise. The Green Sage is by far the nastiest of the three sages. As you can see from the skulls floating around him, he has a CounterFear Barrier. This isn't a problem for most of us, but poor Gen still hasn't sparked any long range sword techniques (Asellus sparked Swallow Swing earlier). As far as attacks go, the green sage mainly attacks with nature based skills. His primary attack is Spore, but he also has an instant death attack in Ectoplasnet. He also attacks twice. This is how we look after one round. Things can go south very quickly in this fight. The Green Sage can also use Scream which is just devastating if it hits the wrong group of people. Fortunately, he didn't use it in this fight. With our team as it is now, this fight becomes a matter of blitzing the Green Sage with all out offense and killing it before it kills us. Fortunately, the Green Sage still doesn't have an overwhelming amount of HP so one more Vermillion Sand is able to finish him off. And that's it for today! Next time we'll see just what makes this mystic so exceptional.

Man, when I first started playing this game, Green Sage was such a huge fuckin' wall for me. Part of the problem was I didn't do a whole lot of grinding, which made even his weakest attacks (like Spore and it's fairly huge AoE) do a ton of damage, and they're not nearly as easy to guard against as the first two.

We never see the contents of the magazine, but... remember, every other character has a different reaction: T260G: "Analyzing Data... B94. W58. H88. IQ... Incomprehensible." Riki: "Look Mei-ling, she has no clothes on. She must be really hot." Mei-Ling: "Don't look at that! Riki." Emelia: "That's really ugly. She's out of proportion. Size isn't everything, you know." Lute: "Ooooh man! Check THAT out! But it'll never beat the real thing." Blue/Rouge: "What a useless book." So yeah we know basically everything about what they're looking at except her hair color. Asellus is looking at a naked, unrealistically buxom, woman and getting turned on by it.

Gina has always remarked about how beautiful Asellus is and for the most part we get the impression that she fell in love with Asellus the first time they met. Also, while White Rose is the kindest of the princesses, she's really sticking her neck out here for Asellus by running away from Orlouge (who due to his Charm Lord powers, she is also attracted to) and disobeying him. It seems unrealistic that she would stick with Asellus for so long just to be nice. As with most story elements in this series, you do have to connect the dots a little, but it's definitely what they were going for. As for the porno mag, I think Riki says outright that there are pictures of women with no clothes on before Mei-Ling chides him not to look.
