Seriously. You can find Prince songs easier than that.

Right?? You can't even find a legal way to stream them (Spotify, Vevo, etc.). I know 1989's not hurting for exposure, but you'd think they'd want to make songs by an artist popular with teens/20somethings easy to find online. I don't understand their logic behind it.

I thought Taylor specifically made a point to pull her songs from Spotify a month or two ago because she didn't feel like the compensation was fair? I think she did interviews about it. It's an understandable position but only one that's really viable for established artists who get tons of exposure otherwise.

My taste in music tends to run more towards punk and post-punk, but goddamn if Sucker isn't fantastic, and I had "Boom Clap" stuck in my head for a week after that SNL performance.

Yeah, Charli XCX owns. I think I like True Romance better, but Sucker is still good (except for Break The Rules, which loses points for the painfully juvenile lyrics).

I was pretty disappointed. It just seemed rushed, and sloppy. Half the album was watered down pop punk, and the other felt like it was trying to recreate Fancy.

This is how I felt. I love her stuff, but aside from the singles she already dropped prior to, everything new felt bland and not her.

London Queen and Gold Coins are just so goddamn fun though. And Break the Rules is silly, but I find it endearing in its simplicity.

True Romance is definitely a more complex album though, and better, it's a shame it wasn't more of a hit.

Yeah, she pulled them from most (all?) ad-supported streaming sites because they pay like poo poo (I think Spotify actually pays the best?). Some places pay more than others per stream but you still need an ungodly amount of streams for decent revenue. Obviously big artists have many sources of income but if you're an unknown (or even just 'mid-tier') you're letting people listen to your stuff for pretty much free. Even so I don't think the mass 'get everything off Spotfy and Youtube' that looks to be gaining steam is the best way to handle things. It's got to be better than people getting it off Piratebay, right? Like someone might listen to a song once but might link it to someone else who listens to it 10 times and links it to even more people? Or is it not even worth the effort?

http://uk.businessinsider.com/pharrell-made-only-2700-in-songwriter-royalties-from-43-million-plays-of-happy-on-pandora-2014-12 posted:

"Despite Pharrell's ubiquity, "Happy" made $2,700 in publisher and songwriter royalties from 43 million Pandora streams in the first quarter of 2014, according to an email from music publisher Sony/ATV CEO Marty Bandier obtained by Digital Music News.
In the letter, Bandier said a million streams of a song on Pandora yields roughly just $60 in royalties. “This is a totally unacceptable situation and one that cannot be allowed to continue,” Bandier wrote.
Fusion's Rob Wile points out that these numbers aren't all inclusive and don't include performance rights royalty rates, so Pharrell likely earned more than the paltry $2,700 figure.
"According to industry analyst Michael DeGusta, Pharrell would likely have earned approximately $25,000 from the 43 million plays," Wile says."

Also 'Sucker' isn't a perfect album but 'Sucker' the song is really good. I can't place it but it really reminds me of something.

I want Charli XCX to put out like an album of early 90's gangsta rap or something because her innate awesomeness is wasted on that album. It's like Marina and the Diamonds without the clever lyrics that actually made Marina interesting.

Oh wow, I thought they called it quits after Rolling Blackouts (which is a fantastic album- one of my 2011 favorites). I definitely like what I'm hearing from that teaser, so color me excited.

The Go! Team probably appeal more to indie pop listeners than mainstream pop listeners, so the indie megathread is also a good place to post them.

Sucker's a good album. It's no True Romance but it's also not terrible. Once you move past the wannabe Joan Jett songs there's a lot of good stuff there (especially in the second half of the album).

Best song? "Need Ur Love" hands down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VseY33dLqDw The tragedy is Superlove isn't on the album.

Good news is that Marina has a new album out soon though.

Given that both make almost the same sort of music, what is the double-standard at work here? It seems like critics kept saying that Marina was 'trying too hard' to be clever with her lyrics and music, which seems like a strange way of saying that the bitch needs to stay in the kitchen and not offer up anything actually challenging that doesn't fit into a predefined pop category.

Tay is seriously the most adorable. I like that not only has she put her dating life in the background, she's doing so by just being a kind, giving person. I have no idea how much downtime she has, but the fact that she spends some of it stalking her fans and then sending personalized notes and gifts and even just commenting on Instagram posts is such a cool thing. Plus look at those loving cats they are the most adorable cats

It's also brilliant marketing, if you want to be a cynic. She's engendering fans for life by taking even the tamest interest in their lives. One little internet interaction with a person from someone they respect and love will make that person that much more likely to follow you to the end of the world.

Honestly, considering what Taylor's done earlier before she started doing this, it wouldn't surprise me if she's doing it simply because she's an incredibly good person.

I'm probably late to the party, but man, Sam Smith's album is great. I'm pleasantly surprised with how diverse the sound is across the album. While I like the songs of his they play on the radio ("Stay With Me", "I'm Not the Only One"), I was worried the whole thing would be mostly the same. I really wish they'd make "I've Told You Now" into a single.

I guess that depends on your definition of a major pop artist. People like Ellie Goulding, Marina, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Carly Rae Jepsen, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson are releasing albums this year with a lot of TBAs and unconfirmeds hanging around. There's bound to be a good one in there.

Speaking of Ellie here's a song from a movie and it's not half bad.
