My first date with my girlfriend, my Ranger's 4th alternator poo poo the bed and left us stranded like a quarter mile from her car. She was wearing heels and refused to let me carry her (in the rain) to her car. Luckily for us there was an officer at the gas station about a block from where we stopped and he offered to give her a ride to her car. Unfortunately for us, he was driving one of those and she had to climb into the back because there was a bunch of equipment in the front seat. She's like 5'2", 100lbs and barely squeezed back there. Yeah, they're for writing speeding tickets and working wrecks, basically the same function as motorcycle cops in the city, just with A/C for hanging out in the sunbaked hellscape that is the interstate outside the cities, and a bit better acceleration/speed than the ol' Harley for the higher speeds out there. My high school art teacher was a retired TX DPS trooper. He preferred the SSP fox-body Mustangs over the Camaros that replaced them -- I think he said the Camaro was faster, but the Mustang would happily cruise all day at full throttle, and drove better -- the Camaro was too sporty-suspensioned, the Mustang had the perfect balance of softer springs but tight enough handling for going balls-out on the superslab. I've always wanted an SSP Mustang, but the drag racers have driven the prices up to ridiculous levels because they come with the beefed-up parts. Very distinctive, as opposed to the LAPD panda or NYC white/blue that most departments use (and then there's the weird ones, like NY State police that have blue cars with yellow graphics). But the white upper surfaces and black sides with minimal graphics -- "State Trooper" on the front fenders and rear end, logo on the door -- just looks nice aesthetically (and is also really easy to make as a cop car at a glance, as opposed to the others which just look like a regular Crown Vic from end-on).
