If you had bought at $2, you almost certainly would have lost all your coins when Mtgox exploded. The only people who got truly rich off coins were people who were in one of the smaller exchanges

Nope, there was no point where you could sell for one thousand and actually get your money out of Mtgox. You couldn't get $$ out of then for months before it exploded.

It's possible you would have been lucky and not had them on the largest exchange, but yeah

"Cashing out" Bitcoins works very differently in practice. You send some third party site the amount of "exchange codes" (a voucher for XY amount of money) and they, if they don't steal it first send it to your Bank account, credit card or paypal balance minus fees.
This only makes sense if you are cashing out profits from early mining over time, nothing else but it kind of works.

Just go buy legit stocks on the legit stock exchange. It's pointless to play the "what if" game with buttcoins

you might as well blame goons for not teaching you how to count cards back when they didn't do multideck or whatever

this

while i guess i can be a bit :smug: with the 7x return i got way back when in 2012, yeah, the thought crossed my mind a couple of times, "what if i would've hodled to 1000$?"

i might be a timid person financially, but the same logic that kept me overall in the black with my local casino is what probably saved me for going full bit tard, basically gtfo when you're winning

then the difficulties in cashing out snapped me out of the trance long enough to actually see bitcoin for what it was, if i would've stayed in i have no doubt i some of my cash would've gone to gox or whatever

strictly speaking there's nothing preventing you from getting a 35x return on your cash right now, in a moment, just drive down to your local place of gambling, find the roulette and put it all on lucky 13

in the end the laffs you get out of bitcoin are the only dependable returns

if bitcoin came out in 2002 i probably would not have bought bitcoin. back in those days i spent all my time on fyad lites and irc and pretty much believed whatever those people said. i first heard about bitcoin in 2010 when i was just starting to not spend all day on irc and the internet in general. i remember everyone saying how dumb it was etc etc. i was going to buy some (when it was less than 1$), but in those days the only way to buy was through money gram, and i just for whatever reason never followed through with it.

i thought for myself and decided to start reading about bitcoin and cryptography and stuff like that. since i'm a software developer i am able to understand some of the technical stuff, but i did take me a while to finally realize this is something i want to try out. people in yospos always talk about how terrible bitcoin is and how none of the sites actually work, but my experience has been the complete opposite. i first bought like 4 btc for under $100 in early 2013 from I think coinbase. i've never tried to straight up sell btc into dollars, but if you venture outside the world of yospos people seem to have no trouble doing it.

back in 2010 all there was was mt gox, and blockchain pretty much. i made sense to say it was all fake, but these days there are literally dozens of exchanges and probably hundreds of block explorers. you people still think they all are part of some grand bitcoin scam conspiracy?

Poor Nicsho, now he won't have the motivation to finish his magnum opus.

quote:

So, here is the basics of Nicsho's "Shadowland":
---
You are Rick Lee, a US Forest Service Ranger who, while investigating invasive plants deep in the woods, develops a strange allergy to shadows. To avoid going into anaphylactic shock, Rick must be in the light at all times. Even letting shadows touch him slightly causes the most painful of sensations.

Rick, seeking help, goes to a local university and ends up getting published in a national medical journal because of his strange condition. He gets a lot of publicity from this, since he is the only one in the world with this affliction.

As the University's engineering department builds him a flexible suit to continue work deep in the forest that will keep him illuminated at all times, someone is trying to pay Rick and the team off, from searching for a cure and staying out of the public eye. As the bribes turn to threats, Rick must flee. Along the way, he discovers that DARPA may have a cure, and decides to head to their headquarters in Virginia, while avoiding whoever is threatening both him and the team helping him along the way..

I really want to see an image of the illuminator suit.

quote:

To be clear: I am 100% nervous about divulging ANY info on any of my projects, ever, because I am terrified of it being stolen. I have worked hard on all my concepts, and I try my hardest to keep them my own until they are finished.

With that said, the reason I am talking about "Shadowland" is because I believe there is a credible risk to details of the game being leaked. However, I do not want to give away every detail. BECAUSE OF THAT, THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION SUUUUUUUUUUUCKS. It sounds like fan fiction, and I hate it. But, for the time being, this is my evidence that I am making this game. Also, its an announcement. Its both?

So that's it. That's the basics. I promise, a better description is coming, but, for right now, that's my evidence that I'm here first with my original idea. And I really have to emphasis that, because I am seriously spooked at the prospect of me working so hard on this project, then having it stolen by some a*****e who wants to take it from me. You know who you are.

Someday, I may even tell the story of how I got forced to divulge. But, if this goes well, maybe I'll tell you more about Richard Edlund Vs. His Sons.

Shadowland is coming to PC, Mac, Linux, PS4 and Xbox One, hopefully late Spring 2015.

the only real way to actually have known this entire giant scam of a play money economy would have, to some limited and brief extent, given good returns, would be to be a time traveler who knows when there are ups and when there are downs. there has never been any point, past perhaps when that guy got given ten thousand butts for a delivery pizza, where it was not all a huge scam

Yeah, but shadowland is a stealth game where you control a guy with a suit full of flashlights who cannot hide in the shadows . It's a completely new concept.

Personally, I am more interested in "Richard Edlund Vs. His Sons".

let's ignore the part where you admit you've never actually tried to redeem your autisim kronars for spendable dollars, presumably opting instead for gift cards, adding another ridiculous step to the chain of attempting to extract value from waste heat

you've got your decentralized, ungoverned, libertarian-wet-dream of a currency, and it turns out it's actually lovely to attempt to use as a currency, asset, or other store of value for a host of fundamental reasons.

- it doesn't scale, the transaction volume of ~3 transactions per second is straining the system as it is and the record of every transaction that's fundamental to the system operating is now approaching 26gb

- the dozens of exchanges you point to are busy getting robbed and soaking their users for all their coin because it turns out bitcoin only works if you distrust literally everyone. it is a trustless system and it's working about as well as you'd expect

- despite being a trustless system about half the idiots using it are trying to fast forward their way through roughly a millennia of monetary policy to make it in some way actually usable, while the other half rail against them arguing that it's a just world and anyone who gets robbed deserved to be

You obviously don't read this thread, because no one has said that since before coinbase even existed. The "impossible to get rid of" blocks* in the laugh-chain were all mined a long time ago, now the laughs are a lot more diverse

* (unless of course you just want USD in your bank account, then it's still quite hard; but you can totally buy poo poo on Newegg and Overstock and wherever else by letting Coinbase do the conversion to cash for you)
