This isn't quite right. Moffat had Capaldi in mind for the Doctor and audition him but felt that an older Doctor wouldn't feel right after Tennant so he began auditioning, found Smith, and told Capaldi to hold on for his turn was next.

According to Armando Iannucci, what actually happened is that Moffat failed to answer Iannucci's three riddles and so could not win Capaldi's freedom.

The Eleventh Hour

Man I love this episode and man do I love Smith. It also appears that quite a lot of people think Toxx was gonna like this episode as well. Which they should because this episode owns. How many people guessed right? 78 people correctly guessed this episode would score an A out of 98 entrants (27 entered last time if you're interested). Including one person who didn't include their forum name so I have no idea who they are. Sadly for mrlJakiri it appears his use of random.org to pick the results doesn't bode well for this season so far.

You might have some problem with your excel-sheet:

There's 14 B:s and only 13 1 points. DoctorWhat has mistakenly got 0 points
Sighence's F should give him/her 5 points, not 4.

There's can be more problems with your sheet, but uniform Aas and Bees hide them well. :)

i think he intentionally is sinking his score

...which was smart because I'm giving out prizes differently this time around, first place gets KR0 and last place (since it requires just as much skill but guessing in the opposite direction) gets MGR, with the other prizes either for tiebreakers, rolling into series 6 contest, or notable entries/posters

F's score 4 because the grade range is A,B,C,D,F so F is 4 away from A

Ok. They aren't used around here*, so I've only seen them used in games and such.

*Technically there's the Matriculation Examination, which uses, L,E,M,C,B,A,I, but technically those are shorthand for phrases in Latin.

I almost went for "B" because I tend to hedge my bits and minimize distance to wrong answers. That's why the vast majority of my guesses are "C", unless I really, really predict Occ will feel a certain way about an episode I feel like C is the safest because the biggest penalty is 2.

We're using the standard US letter grade system, where from best to worst you have A, B, C, D, and F. So a grade of F is 4 steps on that scale from A.

Yeah, I never bothered with Tennant. My first episode of NuWho was that one episode about the game show, and it got so boring that I never gave Doctor Who another chance until Matt Smith's run started. He just managed to make the better first impression, I guess.

In retrospect, I don't even remember why I gave this episode a D. The Eleventh Hour was basically the episode that sold me on Smith and NuWho in general. Maybe it was the bad CGI? I really hate bad CGI.

The three roles of APCs:
Transports.
Supply trucks.
Distractions.

Apologies for the incoming classic serial recommendation, Toxx and Oxx, but it's a useful footnote on how Matt Smith characterises Eleven:

See, Smith was the first Doctor in a long time (first since Tom Baker, possibly even Jon Pertwee) who didn't grow up watching the show - he was about seven when it was cancelled. So to help him get into the role, Moffat sent him an old Patrick Troughton serial called Tomb of the Cybermen. Smith loved it, and immediately asked if he could have a bow tie like Troughton had. Two became Smith's "Doctor", same way that Five was Tennant's (see: that "Time Crash" Children-in-Need special), and it influences how he plays Eleven to a large degree: clownish and good-humoured, but highly manipulative when he needs to be.

Yes, I know it's the Cybermen, and its age shows in a few areas like its approach to race relations and the design of some of the props. I'm mostly just mentioning it because of the impact it had on Smith (though saying that, it is really good as well).

It's supposedly the case that they had a few entirely different and somewhat more conventional outfits planned for Matt Smith to try as possibilities and he basically came in for costume tryouts and convinced them to also let him try one he created one himself and that's what we ended up seeing onscreen.

EDIT: here are the costumes they had designed, as well as his one. I love his facial expressions in the obviously stupid ones.

It's imteresting how none of those costumes apart from the final one at all represent the old man in a young mans body Doctor that Smith played.

Also slight spoiler warning on that link, the header image is of the current Doctor and his companion.
