Why, yes, I do like Kirby games.

There's a lot of episodes; where's a good place to start?

The show doesn't have a whole lot of continuity so you can just pick an episode featuring a game you're interested in and go for it.

I would recommend watching an episode translated by the SA Team first. One of the focuses of our translation is accessibility; we want you to be able to enjoy the show even if you don't know a thing about Japanese television, gaming, or culture. Starting with an SA Team episode can mean a more welcoming experience.

The DVD set from Discotek media has a translation by our own zari-gani and that's the best way to see those licensed episodes.

With that in mind there's several options depending on what you want to see in a show:

I want to watch a comedian struggle to play games I love:
Super Mario World (17, 18), Street Fighter 2 (37), Sonic the Hedgehog (64)

I want to see strange Japanese games that we never got in the US:
Umihara Kawase (31), Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa (44), and Go by Train! (94)

I enjoy watching the depths of human suffering:
Attack! Takeshi's Castle (12), Adventure Island (23), Castlevania 3 (38)

I want something epic:
Mighty Bomb Jack (39, 40, 41), Quest of Ki (54, 55, 60), Lemmings (73, 89, Live Compilation)

How bad can games get:
Doraemon (26), Dragon Buster (90), Paris-Dakar Rally Special (107)

I love seeing Arino interact with the staff:
Quiz: The Feudal Lord's Ambition (25), Ninja Gaiden (29), Bomberman (DVD4)

The trips to arcades are the best part:
Game Center CX in Korea (50), Cannes Trip (65), Robocop (Game Center CX in the USA)

Can you solve the mystery?
Clocktower (53), Hokkaido Serial Murders (105), Night of the Sickle Weasel (113)

There've been a number of good episodes released since that list came out, and some of that stuff is on the DVD, but that (and the advice about picking a game you recognize from the SA-GCCX episode guide) ought to get you started. If you want my suggestion, Ghosts 'n' Goblins is a good, typical, early episode; if you like that, it's only going to get better from there.

Beside my already posted suggestions, don't worry about jumping around or jumping ahead. The flow between episodes is so minor that it's not worth worrying about. Feel free to dance around the listings since there's very few episodes that I'd actually call "bad" (essentially Princess Tomato and Fatal Fury). Pick what you want and go for it.

Seriously, the CPU seemed to knock it out of the park regardless of where the pitch went in the late innings of game 4.

Entertaining episode, but man was the proverbial deck stacked.

I honestly think Arino would have walked away at least with game 4 if the AI hadn't gone into "super-cheat" mode.

One thing I noticed that you might not pick up on is that the AI's players don't actually suffer from fatigue. They would keep their team's best pitcher in for 18, or in one case 27(!) innings with no ill effects.

Apparently Koshien for the Famicom was relatively popular and people are still modding the game to keep it up to date with the new teams for each year's tournament...

If you get the DVD, you should totally watch Atlantis no Nazo/Mystery of Atlantis(Season 2 Episode 1). It was the first episode of the show that focused mainly on Arino playing games badly and it's still one of the best episodes. The game is just perfect for the show, and the amount of teamwork Arino and the staff use during the run is great.

It didn't help that Arino kept throwing the ball to the umpires.

I'm not at all surprised that Arino lost in this one. It seemed pretty buggy whenever the pitcher tried to pick up the ball off of a squeeze or sacrifice bunt.
I wanted to ask about this since it seems like every time Arino used the pitcher to pick up a ball after a successful hit or bunt, it never worked whereas the other fielders could pick it up just fine. Is/was this a bug/glitch in the game itself or some kind of real life rule in Japanese High School Baseball that Arino might've not known of?

Either way, thank you SAGCCX for finally translating this episode. I've been waiting for this one since I've seen the original version a long time ago, but have long forgotten how it ended until tonight. :)

Not necessarily
all that helpful
The way I saw it he always managed to run/dive between the ball and the batter, sometimes by a mere pixel or two, and since the pitcher was therefore incorrectly positioned he couldn't grab the ball. Could be wrong though.

Thanks for the new release! It was enjoyable to watch even though it was clear pretty soon that he would get nowhere near clearing it. Lots of funny moments still. "He plays like the Kacho!"

Na, the pitcher is a standard fielding member even in Japanese baseball. Either Arino was just missing the ball by pixels or there was a small bug there. Pitcher is allowed to pick up the ball and field.

Despair will never let you down.
Malice will never disappoint you.

As far as I could tell, there was no real cheating going on, at least not one that's obvious. Arino was being pretty blatant with his predictability when it comes to pitches, and I wouldn't be surprised if the AI simply figured "well, the count is 3-2, so just like the five times before, there'll be a fastball coming inside" and crushed it.

They could have picked a better game, though - that fielding is very rough. Look at Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for a much more comfortable game, where a minimap of the field is displayed when it's time to field, there's an indicator where the ball will land, you can see which player you're controlling immediately and control him accurately before he comes into view with the minimap.

Something like that would have probably helped him out a lot. And then he'd play against the Mariners and get loving crushed by Griffey's overpoweredness.

I love the feeling of complete and utter despair going on in this episode - it's probably second only to Castlevania 3 in "man, this is SO not working out" factor.

One that really should be added to the "epic" list is the two-parts Battletoads. It's one of the few that Arino comes right out and says he loves playing, and even if he's frustrated he's clearly having fun up until the end. It's also probably my favorite challenge.

Although I also just re-watched the Quest of Ki three-parter and enjoyed it so much I had to play Quest of Ki (Everdrive N8 :) ) for myself. I really want to see the raw live footage of the Part 3 Special but that'd probably be hell to translate.

Generally each school's cheering section alternates between some decided cheer songs (including that 'whistle song' where they're shouting cheers for specific team members as well as the entire team), classic pop/anime songs, and some brass band renditions of popular songs from the last year or so, etc. Here's a sample:

A few years ago Mariko Shinoda (then a member of AKB48) got media attention for tweeting every time her song was played by cheering sections, and responding to cheer squad members/players who tweeted to her about it.

I think they're just cheering. Standard high school baseball cheering is

1 - Well known song chorus where you bang your thundersticks/cones together.
2 - Chanting for the team when the chorus ends
3 - Repeat
