yeah this is just my favourite thing. wasn't scout either an undercover or an fbi informant? seem to remember the name from that big detective style writeup someone did on the silk road mods

also ulbricht was incredibly dumb but i guess illegal businesses need to have book keeping just like normal businesses do, seems kinda unavoidable that you're going to create stacks of evidence of you want to have any knowledge at all of your criminal finances

Then in late July of 2013, Deryeghiayan says he took over the account of “Cirrus,” a moderator on Silk Road’s user forums (who had earlier gone by the name “scout”) responsible for customer support and cleaning up spam and inappropriate comments in the forum. In that role, he often communicated by encrypted chat with the Dread Pirate Roberts—username: “dread”—via a special chat server called Staff Chat run on the anonymity network Tor. In exchange for ten to twelves hours a day of helping to administer and maintain the Silk Road and its community forums, Deryeghiayan says he was paid about $1,000 a week in bitcoins. (The coins, he says, were immediately converted to dollars and seized by the U.S. government.)

so if i remember this properly

scout got arrested

told the feds everything (probs for plea deal?)

fbi took over scouts account

fbi then used that account to immediately become mod of silk road 2

i say fbi i mean dhs i dont care just police or le or whatever

Well funny you should say that. I know that SunWu were based in Toronto and in London. I happen to have some very good contacts in London, some very scary dudes that i'll just call 'the brothers'. They specialise in sorting out these kind of thieves. let's just say a few people have been found floating in the Thames. so SunWu if you are listening - don't be a loving dickhead. We are getting closer to you every moment. This is your final warning.

[–]The_Evil_Within 16 points 6 hours ago

The kind of people who have 'contacts' who will leave bodies floating in the Thames... don't go mouthing off about it on Reddit. In fact, they don't mouth off about it at all, they just get the job done.

i dont know if he got his bitcoins back he didnt

How did LE know that Ulbricht was in the public library at the right time?

i just can't wrap my head around how the FBI would know that dpr was at the library at the exact time they were there! i mean, they'd have to...I don't know...follow him or something!

usually when a drive fails an emergency drive called a spare hot fix will take over for the failed drive and will auto-mirror the parts that were on the failed drive

at that point you want to replace the failed drive but there's not an absolute IMMEDIATE need for it, you can probably get by for a while, because you would still need another two drives to fail until you're looking at data loss

in short: thermos hosed up bad

decent disk arrays will constantly monitor the health of all the disks and will preemptively fail a disk if it starts showing signs of going bad. the. it will call home to the vendor to open a ticket and get a replacement drive sent out.

it's nice to get an email saying "a drive failed, don't worry we're sending a replacement over right away" and then have a tech show up a couple of hours later to replace the drive.
