It's more generally about the influence of the past on the present imo. Or rather,

One of the themes we identified early on for F:NV was "recreating the new world in the image of the old".
So you have stuff like the Legion and Kings and House's casinos, literally built to be an imitation of something from the dimly remembered past, the NCR considering themselves the heirs of old America, the companions who are mostly torn between looking backwards and forwards (does Veronica stay with the Brotherhood or try something new, does Lily take her medication and regain her sanity or does she skip it and remember her grandkids) etc.

I can agree all of the DLCs revolve around this theme, yes, but how do you figure New Vegas itself does? You track down the man who tried to murder you, then work for one of the factions who can't get over the past in various ways and irrevocably end up at the second Battle of Hoover Dam.
Well, you have to remember that the happiest ending involves the NCR winning while coming to terms with their old enemies. And while you can kill Benny and get revenge, you can also forgive.

But also remember:

Boone's story is about forgiving himself for Bitter Springs.

Veronica's story is about choosing the Brotherhood over exploring the world.

Raul's story is about finding value as an old man by living in the past or finding a new place for himself.

Lily's story is about her memories.

Cass's story is about giving up her business.

Arcade's story is about dealing with his relationship with Arcade.

The game is definitely about dealing with the past, and dwelling on the past is rarely shown in a positive light.

Themes? Not about overcoming evil? In a video game? What?

In all seriousness, one of my favorite things about New Vegas is that its not a conventional post apocalyptic narrative about survival and brutality, its how different society's are structuring themselves as they rebuild. And the setting and narrative actually gives thought to the issue. I don't know of any other media that has that twist on the post apocalyptic theme(which I'm not generally a fan of, despite having loved Fallout since the first game). Is there any other game/book/tv series that features this?

On the plus side, you can take all the poo poo back to the Sink or Sierra Madre bunker or the Lucky 38 or whatever you use as your home and store it so you never need to buy anything else ever again.

I just put them all in a safe, and every time I need to load up on 40 mm's and frag grenades and boxes of .30-06 and .45 I just take one out of the safe and go exchange it at the gun runners.

I mean it's money, it's just heavy. there's no need to turn them into different money so you can stuff them in your pocket.

One of my favorite memories from this game is from a complete psycho Legion-aligned run where I tried to do a Nuke-in-your-pocket assassination on president Kimball, got sad when I realized you couldn't interact with him that way, then realized that a certain someone standing really close, who you COULD pickpocket, was going to get a medal from him!

And the funny thing is, I play as a goodie-two-shoes in games p. much all the time otherwise! But that moment of everything exploding at the speech (I was also running IWS at the time, so there was probably an even higher bodycount than you'd normally get) was just priceless.

All I'll say is *thank god* for Project Nevada's running feature. :D

You could argue the entire series is in some way about letting go of the past. The entire world is setup on the idea of America not letting go of its 1950s ideologies and destroying itself as a result. Fallout 2 is about trying to stop the Enclave from destroying everyone with mutations in their DNA (and therefore symbolically eradicating any trace of post-bombs America) in order to re-instate the old Government and restart civilisation again. NCR is also trying this although through less diabolical means. Fallout 3 has a similar aspect but Fallout 3 was more about saving the world and lets not talk about it. New Vegas is about paving out a new path for the title city by choosing how to move forward, be it via advancement or regression and each ending demonstrates that (Legion restarts civilisation in a regressive, brutal but (kind of) efficient manner, House allows for a stable status quo, NCR gives an unstable remodelling on Old World America and Independent just sort of depends on you). Hell, every major leader is stuck in the past in some way. The first Fallout arguably inverts this theme somewhat, with The Master trying to unnaturally "jumpstart" a new future through mutation which wouldn't work but its certainly present in the rest of the games.

I'm justing bowing into this thread quickly, as I'm in my first play-through and want to dodge spoilers:

Are there any particular places or quests in the base game that served as pre-release teasers or background to DLC content? For example, there's a brief mention of Joshua Graham in one of the loading screens, but is there some place in the base game where I can get background on him before I start Honest Hearts? Same question for the other DLCs.

Before Honest Hearts: go to Camp Golf and talk to Chief Hanlon, also go to the Fort and chat to some legionaries.

Before Dead Money: go to the Hidden Valley bunker unaccompanied and chat with the companion you can pick up at the 188

Old World Blues doesn't have much setup in the main game that I recall. Maybe get up close and personal with some cazadores and go to Vault 22.

Before Lonesome Road: speak with Johnson Nash in Primm and the companion you can get from Mojave Outpost has a couple of relevant lines, otherwise it's mainly referenced in the other DLCs.

This was on consoles, but you can just make it by essentially one-shotting him directly back against the force-field so you don't have to waste anytime positioning him, then just bolt. I did this by having maxed Unarmed and Piercing Strike, then standing in front of him with a stealth boy and uppercutting him into oblivion. Also make sure you're not wearing anything but light armor (is there non-light armor in Dead Money?) and while it's not required, some turbo (which you can find in randomly-spawning loot containers) and Travel Light both help. Implant-GRX would also completely trivialize it but I like to do Dead Money at an earlier level when it actually presents a challenge.

Also, this probably sounds obvious, but you are leaping down to the lower walkways while running through that one bit and not just following the path, right?

Other people have mentioned being able to sneak past him at that far entrance just before the force-fields come up again but I've never gotten the timing right.

Two-Step Goodbye relies on crits for its special effect (explosions). My personal preferred build maxes both, but if you're going for one or the other I'd max Luck and put Strength at at least 7.

Finished Dead Money earlier. I liked it. Didn't always like the gameplay (I thought the traps were sometimes too much and the nature of the game lead to it being inconsistent as to whether or not you could successfully sneak past an enemy), though I appreciate that it added a different flavour to the game. Design-wise, maybe a little more could have been done with the Villa, I don't know, I understand a sort of labyrinthine setting for survival horror but thought it sometimes felt a little too samey. The concept was cool and the story was interesting enough to keep me playing. Was sad that I couldn't save Dog. :(

Final boss was funny. Reprogrammed the turrets and then shot him twice in the head while he was still jabbering on. :smugissar: I decided to be cheeky and take two bars of gold because I never learn. I didn't bother with the challenges I had left as even with fewer traps I couldn't really be arsed to navigate the Villa all over again. I just grabbed the snow globe (having missed it earlier) and cashed the chips that came with it for mucho monies (further diluting the moral, but you know, papa's gotta eat/get his kit repaired). I still have saves I think, but I don't see myself going back unless I missed something completely awesome. At least it wasn't like The Pitt, where my decision not to get all the steel ingots was also to do with me not being that fond of the DLC overall.

Will move onto Old World Blues shortly, after sorting out my inventory. I'm not going in entirely blind on this one, but most of it is still new to me. Thanks to some of you for the advice, will take a few books and maybe some toasters with me (though I do have some energy weapon ammo already).

I think the exact stats will depend a little on what weapons you want to use but re: early implants etc. here's what I do:
- Take 8 luck, 8 intelligence, you need 7 endurance to get all special implants, 9 to get all special implants plus PHOENIX and subdermal implant.
- Buy shovel, go straight north to cemetery and grab cigarette butts, rob graves if you want.
- Head further north along the westernmost ridge/hills until you're above chance's grave, take his knife.
- Fast travel back to Goodsprings, head north to Sloan, just before Sloan veer E, then NNE in a straight line towards the shack at the entrance to Black Mountain.
- Follow the W then N edge of the path up Black Mountain and then go up the narrow slope with the dead NCR trooper at the bottom.
- Run straight to Durable Dunn's sacked caravan and take the combat armor/drugs/weapons.
- Sell stuff at Crimson Caravan/Gun Runners.
- Head into Freeside (as soon as you have >2000 caps go talk to the securitrons to pass the check to enter Vegas in case you spend too much later).
- Win max prize at Atomic Wrangler.
- Go to Usanagi and get luck implant.
- Enter Vegas and win max prizes at casinos.
- Go back to Usanagi and take rest of implants you want (I'd take intelligence for sure, since this will give you more skill points and you're like level 2 at this point).
- Go to Lucky 38, go to Tops, lockpick Benny's room and find Yes Man (you need 40 lockpick + a magazine for this, so plan ahead), tell Swank about Yes Man, ambush Benny in his room and kill with Chance's knife.
- At this point if you want more implants first then go into OWB if you want more money first then go into DM. Also if you're using energy weapons then always go to DM first because the Holorifle is just so loving good.

This is my favourite way to play the game.

You can mindlessly grind through the win limit with blackjack- I just max bet and stand on all 18 and hit otherwise. With 9 luck you will win about 4/5 or 5/6 hands this way in my experience, with many blackjacks that count for 1.5 wins.

Unfortunately my luck is average. That's more than it was in 3, where it was 1 and I still had no trouble getting critical hits. I knew it affected the gambling in NV so I put more points into it... kind of regretting that now, as it feels like you strictly need high luck to make it more profitable (obviously, you're thinking).
