Those two desktops look better than what I am currently using. Are they open software or free source?

SunView was better than most Linux even today, insofar as it looked similar to GEM on Atari ST and was a similar tone-deaf attempt to mimic the original Mac

now show me some NeWS

sunview only shipped a handful of tools, and there were pretty much no preferences, customization, or third party applications.

the first few releases of gnome 3 and kde 4 both managed to have similar properties without being good

Not have a whole bunch of "designers" cargo-culting the stupid compromises that Windows 8 made to shoehorn a desktop OS for mouse and keyboard onto a portable touch screen device that doesn't exist? Not have insane defaults that you need to dig through a registry and edit key values to change? like seriously what is up with multiple monitor support? I wouldn't think that plugging a laptop into a monitor would be an edge case in TYOOL 2015. This has been a solved problem for at least a decade now.

what happens when you switch virtual desktops? because if it's the same thing that happens when I do it before hunting down some obscure setting in the registry, it's not sane behavior.

on gnome 3 the bonus monitor is treaded like its own desktop and isnt connected to the virtual switched by default and all tbh when im alt tabbing sometimes it gets a littyle confisuing............ esp if u have a app w/ several windows of it open and one window is on a virtual desktop and another is on the secondary )tertiary...) monitor.. and it doesnt do nething when u press te button and then u realize that its h9ighl;ights the one on the secondary.. so its better 2 just use the expose knockoff thing
